Rexton RX5 powered with RX270 XDi engine packed with 5 cylinders and displacement of 2696cc. Maximum power output of 162bhp @ 4000rpm and Maximum torque output of 340Nm @ 1800-3250rpm.

Powering the Rexton RX7 is the RX270 XVT diesel mill which sports a 2696cc capacity and makes 186.5PS @ 4000rpm while torque peaks at 402Nm between 1600-3000rpm. The RX5 version gets a slightly detuned version of the same inline-5 cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

      Exterior:
Taking a cue from Mercedes M class, the DRLs are similar and give a sophisticated look. The LED tails lamps are just as pleasing. The front grill is far better looking with wide chrome lining than the outgoing generation of the Rexton. The wheels look a bit under sized and perhaps the reason is aimed at comfort. The alloys are okay. This being a CBU, panel gaps were mostly non-existent except for the place where the rear hatch is hinged. The Rexton comes in 4 colors - Black, White, Silver and Purple. The indicator lamps are integrated with the fog lamps. This could lead to higher repair bills. I personally felt the spare wheel could have been mounted on the rear hatch instead of being kept under floor of the last row seats. The ORVMs are large and provide decent visibility. The rear of the Rexton looks a bit like the Montero. M&M Ssangyong's Rexton is a body-on-frame SUV that will compete with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Ford Endeavour. Rexton is an excellent SUV which looks and performs similar to other premium brands in the market.

      Interior:
Coming with a dual tone beige interior, the cabin is well put together. The RX5 should have got leather seats as provided in the Rx7. The seats are supportive - not too soft or too hard. I found the seats placed too low in mid row. Not at all comfortable for me, but Anand didnt feel so. The last row cannot seat even teenagers due to being nearly on the floor. The Rexton is basically a 5 seater with 2 jump seats which can be removed to store hand luggage, golf carts, etc. The Infotainment system is not at all intuitive - ICE fans please note. The AC controls for rear and front are quirky, and need re-setting every time starting the car. The steering wheel is nice to hold, but the horn is to be searched for. Too many buttons on the steering wheel. The indicator and headlamp stalk is on the left side, instead of right side. The mid rows seats are split 40 on the right and 60 on the left, again the ergonomics are designed for left hand drive. The hinge on the last row is exposed and you get your dress greased if you are not careful.

The car comes with some removable bays and lids that serve no purpose, which might be a case of dressed down vehicle sold in India. The cabin lights do a good job of lighting up the whole cabin. There is no dead pedal in the Rx5, not even space to rest your feet on long drives. The gear is easy to reach and use. The driver console is utilitarian, and shows all the right info. Nothing fancy here a la XUV500. An ergonomic failure is that when the door is closed you can't access the seat adjustment buttons.

      Driving:
This big SUV behaves like a sedan both in city and on the highway. It is easy to maneuver around traffic, but one must get used to the slow braking. The vehicle stops but it is as if there is a lot of effort going into stopping the vehicle. The engine is strained once you go into 3 digit speeds. The suspension is soft and bad patches on the road are dismissed with arrogance at medium and above speeds. At low speeds, passengers could find themselves bobbing up and down a bit more than say in the XUV500. The anti-roll stabilizers do a fine job when cornering. The gear shifts are slick and very easy to use. The clutch is soft and driving in city traffic should not be a pain.

      Turning Radius:
Rexton has got a turning radius of 5.7m which will be a pain to take 'U' turns in the city. However in Highways it wont be a problem.

Here is a pictorial demonstration of the turning radius tested.

Rexton RX5 comes preloaded with a Kenwood Double DIN DVD Reciever (kenwood DDX4031BT). 4 Kenwood Speakers are mounted on the front & rear passenger doors. A dummy place holder is available on the boot lid to mount another 2 drivers. Kenwood tweeters are mounted on A pillars facing diagonally the passenger & the driver. The overall sound stage was good & the sound was balanced. The mids were strong but the sound from the tweeters was a bit laid back. Overall a decent sound quality
      from a OEM sound system.

      Positives:
The 2 Din touch screen HU from Kenwood packed a lot of features. It supports playback of Audio CDs, DVD (RW) with Dolby Digital & DTS support, WAV, MP3 & DivX. It had support for USB, Bluetooth, iPod, embedded GPS and Reverse camera output. Quality of audio output from Bluetooth streaming was commendable. There were quite a lot of options to play with when it comes to Custom EQ & Crossover settings. HPF, LPF & Band pass settings were available for the Low, Mid & High frequencies. The USB scan was quick enough to scan our 8GB drive and play songs from it.

      Negatives:
      - The touch screen UI was bit laggy to play with.
      - When we connected our 2nd gen iPod Touch, it was not recognized for some reason.

      The Midbass Drivers:
      - The mid bass and tonal range was good. The speakers packed a decent punch
      - The positioning of the midbass drivers were conventional like in most cars, unlike the placement in XUV where the drivers are placed closer to the middle of the door.
      - The drivers were sounding good until reaching 75% of the volume. When the volume was increased beyond 75%, the doors startled rattling & a slight distortion from the drivers were heard.

      The Tweeters:
      - The tweeters position was good just facing diagonally opposite to the driver & the front passenger.
      - The sound from the tweeter was bit laid back to our taste & highs were missing some details.

      Overall With Regard to Car,
      What is Good
+ Build quality, Interior quality, Ride quality
+ Body-on-frame wit the side step looks nicely integrated. The design is seamless which gives it a premium feel at this segment.
      + Wonderful luxury looks
+ Minimal engine sound and nil turbo lag
      + Smooth gear shifts
      + Commanding Driver Seat View.
+ Easy cornering in roads with nil body roll
+ AC is an absolute chiller
+ AC coolers even in the 3rd row with individual controls.
+ Comes with 4 wheel drive always
+ Great Ground clearance for Indian driving conditions
+ The DRLs looks classic, absolutely nothing like the fake DRLs on the XUV.
      + Built like a tank.

      What could have been better
      - Handling goes for a toss due to soft suspension
      - Braking could have been better for heavy weight car, but far better than XUV500.
      - Space is at a premium for a 2 million car
      - Too much spec difference between MT and AT
      - Engine seems strained at highway speeds. Easily noticeable strain after 120kmph.
      - Poor horn press placement in steering
      - Old school door locks with flimsy plastic
      - Poor head light visibility for night driving
      - Middle row centre seat uncomfortable due to a ramp in the centre floor
      - 2nd row AC vent position too below that if 3rd person sits in centre of middle row, hi/her legs will block the Air ventilation.
      - Rear AC needs to switch ON every time when starting car and it won’t stay in ON mode if you switch off the car
      - Lagging touch interface with Inbuilt Kenwood entertainment system
      - Poor turning radius. Need to struggle in city for taking U turn.
      - The build quality is good but the doors don't close with a thud like the VWs & Skoda's.
      - Lack of sufficient storage space inside the car. Door pockets are narrow and you do not get sufficient storage spots/holes.
      - Last row seat is strictly for kids and also lack of sufficient under thigh support in middle row seats
      - Spare tyre's size is different from the regular tire's size

Colour's Available : Volcano Black, Satin White, Moondust Silver, Opulent Purple.

      - Fortuner is a true beast and for roaring. Rexton is luxury beast and a silent commutator.
      - If you need the grunt feel then Fortuner it is, If you need a business class and luxury feel then Rexton it is. Remember fortuner basic is 2 lakhs higher than Rexton RX5.
      - So even in pricing wise, Rexton does justice. I would say it’s a pure luxury car and holds VFM tag in that price range.
      - Fortuner has become expensive over a period of time and has become far reach for common people like us. Rexton is a good alternative and by no means can be called a ‘Poor Man’s Fortuner’.

If you are the kind who likes to be driven around in a relaxed manner while you enjoy your daily newspaper in the comfort of the back seat, without having to worry about the mad traffic around you, there is nothing quite like the Rexton. People who have plans for buying the top end Innova, i suggest you save up for a few more months and get the rexton. It is pure VFM if you are driver driven.

      Advantages of Fortuner over Rexton,
      - Grunt engine and aggressive looks.
      - Toyota branding
      - Wonderful service network
      - Trustable and proven engine
***Only comparison car is Fortuner and this Rexton ranks atleast >50% when compared to fortuner in both feature wise and pricing factor wise.

Excellent review pradeep. The rexton is an excellent buy imo for people who prefer a comfortable highway cruiser with loads of luggage space.

      Top review Pradeep.

I only wish that that had put a much more powerful engine. The vehicle was struggling to move beyond 120km/hr when fully loaded. They should also do something about the last row. It's strictly a 5 + 2 baby seater.

Exactly. When i drove. I tried my best to go beyond 120kmph. But with straight 2km stretch in ECR also Rexton was struggling like anything and as it reaches 120kmph, road of 2km ends

Could have been more powerful so that we would have drooled to the core during our test drive.

      Excellent review there Pradeep!!

A big shout to all the folk who have been part of this review and special thanks to Madhu for making this happen

Rexton seems be a reasonable alternative for Fortuner, however M & M needs to provide a step motherly treatment to Rexton customers considering they are buying a premium vehicle. M & M needs to have separate lounge, service station, SA and SE for Rexton if they are serious about this brand.
