      Hyundai "EON"; launched @ 2.69L

With the domestic small car market heating up, Korea’s Hyundai Motors is lining up a new release for India. The vehicle, to be launched in the second half of 2011, is likely to be priced not much higher than that of Maruti’s cheapest variant, the Maruti 800.

Expected to house a 800cc engine, research and development of the car is being undertaken in Korea. “We are primarily looking at a petrol variant, with a price tag in the range of Rs 2 lakh,” a company official said.

The Maruti 800 MPI BS-III, with air conditioning, is priced at Rs 216,475 (ex-showroom Kolkata), while the Hyundai Santro, the Korean auto major’s cheapest domestic vehicle, costs Rs 271,331 (ex-showroom Kolkata).

However, with the Hyundai i10 taking over from the Santro as the highest selling vehicle within its stable, the new small car is possibly aimed at reclaiming the mass market segment that is slated to grow robustly.

Apart from Hyundai, Nissan is also working on developing a small car in collaboration with Ashok Leyland to target the mass market. Moreover, Renault, which also has a partnership with Nissan, is combining with Bajaj to build an ultra low-cost vehicle for India.

The recently launched Ford Figo, which marks the American car maker’s foray into the Indian small car segment, has an entry-level variant priced at Rs 3.66 lakh.

Hyundai Motors India may raise prices of its vehicles

Hyundai said it may raise prices of its vehicles by about one per cent from April 1 due to the new emission norms. It had earlier said it was revising prices due to the change in excise duty subsequent to the Budget, as well as increase in the cost of raw materials. “After April, Hyundai will not look at revising prices for the next two quarters,” an official added.

Hyundai HA/H800 800cc small car named THE EON; to be priced under INR 3 LAKHS!

Following a spate of sightings in and around the suburbs of Chennai, the buzz seems to be rapidly building around the Hyundai small car that the South Korean carmaker plans to launch in India to take on the likes of the Maruti alto and the Chevrolet Spark. We have just gotten wind of the name Hyundai India plans to christen its 800cc small car as. According to AutoCarIndia editor Hormazd Sorabjee, Hyundai plans to name the 800cc small car the Eon.

With that, it is confirmed that the small car is not one more of the i-monikered cars that Hyundai has developed. Therefore, there is a good chance that this car will be more of a Indian specific model rather than a global offering by the automaker. The car will indeed feature an 800cc, three cylinder petrol engine and by Hyundai officials’ own admission a while ago, will come with class leading performance as well as fuel economy. The pricing too will be under 3 Lakh rupees to take the fight up to the ultra popular Maruti Alto.

While the launch date still remains unconfirmed at this moment, an October launch to coincide with the Indian festive season is what is likely. Hyundai insiders have also told us that initial production of the Hyundai Eon Small Car has commenced and that there is a lot of excitement and anticipation at Hyundai India regarding this product, which would enable Hyundai to challenge India’s largest selling car, the Maruti Alto.

Hyundai has also aggressively expanded its dealer footprint for a pan India presence as the brand lags behind market leader Maruti when it comes to dealer penetration and brand recognition in India’s hinterland, where the demand for a sub INR 3 Lakh car is expected to be particularly strong. So, with all these measures in place, the Hyundai Eon Small Car promises to be yet another big volumes puller for Hyundai India. The wait for the Hyundai Eon’s launch in October begins!

ACI captures Hyundai EON's first images

Here are a few images of the much awaited Hyundai Eon Small Car courtesy AutoCarIndia. From the images, it is quite evident that the Hyundai Eon Small Car is heavily inspired by the Fluidic design philosophy that runs through all new Hyundai cars’ design. The Hyundai Eon, at least from the angles we’re seeing doesn’t seem to be a mirror cracker when it comes to ravishing good looks.

The Hyundai Eon will be powered by a 800cc, three cylinder petrol engine which will output around 50 Bhp. Now that figure makes the Hyundai Eon a tad more powerful than the entry level Maruti Alto at which it is being pitched at by Hyundai India. With that much power and a 800cc displacement, which is quite similar to the engine layout of the Alto F8D, expect the Hyundai Eon to also deliver an ARAI mileage figure in the whereabouts of 18 KMPL. The Hyundai Eon will now become the entry level Hyundai, displacing the Hyundai Santro Xing from its perch. Signaling the built-to-a-price underpinnings of this car, the Hyundai Eon’s Magna variant is seen with black, non body colored mirrors while the door pulls also are non body colored.

The Hyundai Eon side profile isn’t anything to wrote home about with plenty of bulbousness to boot while the rear end looks fine. While it could be the angle of the photos we’re seeing, the design somehow literally doesn’t have the flowing nature that the “Fluidic” Hyundai cars come with. Any which ways, design isn’t really what an entry level small car buyer really bothers about with the proof of the pudding being the atrocious looking first gen Hyundai Santro(Atos).

This is where the Hyundai Eon can be expected to score a few brownie points, of being a solidly engineered car that will last a long time while being easy to service across India. This point is especially crucial for Hyundai India as the South Korean automaker has signaled its ambitions of taking on the best selling Maruti Alto, which happens to be India’s highest selling car. Hyundai India for its part has embarked upon an aggressive dealership expansion program in India’s hinterland.

Standalone dealerships selling only Hyundai’s entry level cars like the Eon and the Santro Xing are a part of Hyundai India’s strategy of taking on Maruti Suzuki, which enjoys a very good presence even in smaller towns of India. Expect the Hyundai Eon small car to be launched bang in the middle of the Indian festive season during October at well under 3 Lakh rupees for the base variant.
