Cool Would you buy an Indian made sports car?

      Hi gearheads,

Just wondering about the state of maturity of our country's automobile market.

How far have we really come from those 'Ambassador' and 'Premier Padmini' days.

So here is my question to you guys-

Would you buy an Indian made sports car with following specification(fictional)-
      1) 6 cylinder engine
      2) Rear wheel drive
      3) 300-450 bhp
      4) 15 lac - 20 lac price range
      5) A/T or M/T
      6) And yes, Efficiency figures of less than 10 kmpl.

I have not included a poll as of yet. Will be added if required.

I for one would love to own such a car.

Before answering, I would like to clarify how one can expect a 6 cylinder (V6, hopefully?) 300-450 bhp RWD car to be within 20L, even though locally assembled. I understand your concept here is fictional, but is it practical?

As for owning the same, I would love to have it, yes, but when you consider buying such a vehicle, it is not really feasible for majority of the population out here (including me, at this moment. Someday!!)

I think, it would be difficult to get all of the above with current Euro emissions (IV / V) norms.

good point. Lets for a moment not take emission norms into the equation since we are just talking and trying to understand what we think as a car buying public about this prospect. And i absolutely understand and support the need for strict emission norms. But here lets just not think about them in this fictional situation.

With the current infrastructure, i would prefer to buy a luxurious, under powered, economical sedan or SUV rather a sports car even if it is available in that price range. But yes, i could buy it as a Track only car.

If such a car is made available at such a cheap cost, then maybe be it can get few takers initially. But for long term success, there would be need of spare parts availability, service support etc and reliability of such a car/engine will also needed to be proven. And lot of finance will be needed to achieve all this which will result into a very costly car. I think people will prefer proven cars over this so called sports car even when those proven cars have relatively lesser power.

Is Mahindra smoking into any venture like this ? If yes, first let them fix the brake pad issue in XUV then they can do anything

Honestly we should appreciate if such a daring move is done by an Indian company. I've seen only Bajaj & Mahindra taking such steps in their product lines in the recent years. Yes I would take it even it has 'n' number of niggles. What the heck if I get a super sport in less than 20L, when we can't even imagine to afford sports cars manufactured by other foreign brands...!!

First off, India as a country is so used to having 4cyl engines producing 100 to 150 odd bhp that a 6cyl engine sounds too goood to be true.

these Inline 6 or V6 engines we get to see and use, are only in cars like the BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. these vehicles are also far from reach of the common man.

For me to choose a vehicle from an Indian Manufacturer will require answers to the following... which 6cyl engine are you talking about here, who is the manufacturer? what kind of transmission will it be?

To answer the question - NO, at least not in the next 10-15 years.
If a car produce 300-450 BHP, I'd need reliable safety features to go with it and I'd rather park my money with someone who has "been there, done that" than experimenting with desi manufacturers even if they come at half the cost.
