      Understanding Super Sealants / Coatings

Well you may have heard me blabbering about semi permanent coatings and super sealants and some of the members seem to be interested in exploring further so thought of creating this thread as a place for the discussions to happen (we will be referring to some of the discussion we had here Alloy wheels - Cleaning and Protecting in the context of alloys and expand it)

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a Super Sealant / Coating IS ...

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's basically a type of sealant which is unlike the traditional acrylic / polymer based sealants, uses different proprietary technology like resin / ceramic/ glass.

All coatings unless specifically mentioned can be applied on all external painted metals/plastic, un-coated plastic / vinyl, glass, bare metal anything...except rubber and soft tops, whatever is outside can be coated with a semi-permanent coating.

To dig a little deeper, it's basically a product which is

      • longer lasting / durability which typically range from 1 year to 5 years (average 18-24 months durability)
      • offers some amount of scratch / swirl / bird poop / chemical / dust / acid rain / water hardness resistance / detergents / alkaline / high pressure
      • acts like additional clear coat (generally 0.5 micron to 02 micron thickness)
      • superior shine and slickness without much effort and maintenance
      • do not require any specific shampoo / QD for maintenance (this is a key difference between such coatings and nano tech sealants)
      • can only be removed by compounding (and hence nearly permanent or semi permanent coating)
      • makes subsequent cleanings much easier as they offer some amount of self cleaning properties (dust dirt etc are not able to stick to it)

Basically once you put them on, you don't need to wax / seal or touch you car again till the coatings lifetime, just keep washing with a good shampoo and once in a while use some kind of gloss enhancing QD to add a little more shine.

Though the image below is specific for System X, the properties highlighted are more or less similar for whichever coating you choose with some fine but important differences

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a Super Sealant / Coating Is NOT ...
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      • its not a diamond coating for the paint which will prevent all scratches / damages to the paint (will provide some hardness and resistance)
      • not a replacement for bad washing technique (major cause of swirl formation)
      • not a complete replacement for failing clear coat (will slowdown the damage though)
      • not a full replacement for failing clear coat (it will slow down the failure of clear coat and provide some protection

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Preparing for A Coating Application
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The proper preparation is a key step to application of any coating. The actual application is going to take very short time but the prep needs to be good. Have a look at the steps below and you will understand what is involved.

Thumb Rule: Pick a system and stay within the system

After you have selected your coating,
for best results, try to use as many products of the same company possible i.e. if any pre cleaner is suggested use that. Not always necessary but good practice to ensure less bonding issues.

Proper Prep: This is the key step for all semi-permanent / nano tech coatings

You want your car to be in best condition before sealing it for long duration. Am sure the following steps are going to drive you to curses and abuses at me.

      A. CLEAN:
Wash using a pH neutral, non-gloss enhancing, wax free shampoo to wash car.

This is a critical step. You want your shampoo to clean and clean well and not do some crap. Throw away whatever rubbish you have unless your shampoo says the above magic words.
No ONR, no D114 except a pure shampoo! Why you need something like this is because for a coating you need squeaky clean paint, nothing which can interfere with the bonding and you will end up wasting money.

      B. DECON: This step involves the following step to ensure you car is free of all above-surface and below-surface contaminants

      • Clay every surface you are going to coat for removing above-surface contaminants
      • Iron remover application till there is no bleeding. Iron remover for below surface contaminants
      • Tar remover application as per bottle directions. For wheels / lower body this is an important step.
      • Wash with an APC to strip previous sealants / waxes leftovers.

      C. CORRECT(Optional Step): This is to ensure you paint is as much defect free as possible because once the coating is on, all the defects will be sealed in for duration.

You can do a hand polishing or machine polishing to the best of your ability or you can of course get it done from outside

Before application of coating, you need to do a final wipe down with IPA / CarPro Eraser or something similar to ensure all polishing oils / contaminants / waxes have been removed as they can and will interfere with the bonding of the coating
      D. COATING: Apply as per directions on bottle as thinly as possible, in shade and under cover is possible. Some coatings have finicky curing times so please do enough research before application

      E. MAINTENANCE: Simply use pH neutral soap or any shampoo for regular cleaning. In case of very dirty wheels, you can use well diluted wheel cleaners (20:1 dilution etc) but mostly will not be required.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Evaluating Coatings Before Purchase
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well i will be listing some of the parameters which i used for my coating selection, some of these may be applicable to you some not...So feel free to come up with your own list.

      1. Availability: can it be easily imported to India?
      2. Price: how expensive is it?
      3. Coverage: for above price will it cover one car, two cars or more?
      4. Durability: How many years or months will it last?
      5. Preparation: how easy or difficult is the prep before application? does it need specialist products to pre clean
      6. Application: how easy or difficult is the application process? does it have any specific curing / temperature requirements?
      7. Recommended for: which surfaces like glass, metal, bare paint, plastic bumpers etc?
      8. Scratch Resistance: how much scratch resistance will it provide?
      9. Maintenance: how is the maintenance after application? does it require specialist shampoos, QD etc to maintain the shine?

Other factors which can be important for coating selection is Gloss and Slickness, Reflectivity, Swirl Removal / Minor polishing at intervals and so on...why i did not factor them into the above list is because most coating will exhibit these characteristics but the degree will vary

Once you have decided which of the evaluation criteria are important for you let's look at the products available as of date in the market and ones which i know can be imported to India

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Difference between Coatings & Nano Sealants
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The key difference between Coatings and Nano sealants are

      • Maintenance: coatings do not require maintenance products unlike nano products which need dedicated products like shampoo, QD etc
      • Durability: coatings do not need to be reapplied periodically and can last from 12-18-24 months or more
      • Removal: coating may need a machine polishing to remove it completely unlike nano stuff which poofs off if you wash with an APC or any kind of gloss enhancing shampoo or anything which interferes with the bonds

There may or may not be a difference in chemical composition but for us, what matters are the above two points....Anything which meets both the criteria above can be termed as a coating and anything which does not can be termed as a nano sealant

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coatings / Super Sealants - What's Available for Import
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally we come to the discussion on what brands of coatings are available which actually ships to India. Am just going to name them (in no particular order) and then it will be upto you to do some research before purchasing whatever suits you.

      1. CarPro CQuartz
      2. CarPro Cquartz UK
      3. Gtechniq C1
      4. Gtechniq C1+
      5. Optimum Opticoat v2.0
      6. Element 119 System X
      7. 22ple VX1

      9. Max Protect Ultimate Nano Coat V1
      10. Max Protect Ultimate Nano Coat V2
      11. Concours Car Care Ceramishield

(NOTE: the above mentioned are specifically for paint, they may or may not be applicable on other external surfaces...Dedicated products for other surface like glass, alloys, plastic trim, leather, fabric etc may also exist as offered by manufacturers)

The ones mentioned above are the ones which are sold to retail / DIY detailing enthusiasts. For the pro Detailer who can clear the requirements the following products below are available and these are not sold to general public and am briefly mentioning them below to avoid any confusions when you come across them.

      1. CarPro CQuartz Finest
      2. Optimum OptiGuard
      3. Concours Car Care Ceramishield Pro (not sure if this is out in the market yet...need to check and confirm back)

The pro versions have all the properties same as DIY versions but increased by some degree and one has to clear certifications as per individual companies requirements before they can advertise it or even sell it as a service.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nano Sealants - - What's Available for Import
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here we will briefly talk about some of the popular nano sealants (in no particular order) which are there out in the market and as usual only those which can be imported in India.

      10. CarPro Reload (need to figure out where it fits)
      11. Gtechniq EXO

Yes there are more coatings and nano sealants out there, specially in South East Asia and Japan but those are almost impossible to import locally to India nor are there too many feedbacks available (mostly in Japanese and other SE Asian languages) so those have been left out of the discussion

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      FAQ's
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Do i really need to do such an intensive prep?
A: Yes, for the best longevity and bonding an intensive prep is best. Anyway will have to do it one time only so go for it and spend a little money

Q: My clear coat has faded in some spots, can a coating replace it?
A: To some extent a coating can and will act as protection over any spots where clear coat maybe fading. That said, it is not suggested to depend only on a coating, get it repainted and then go for the coating

Q: I love using waxes and sealants, can i still use my existing products over the coating?
A: Yes you can wax / seal /glaze polish over any coating. But while you may gain in additional looks, you may lose out on the coating self cleaning / looks benefits. The wax / sealant properties will be on top while the coating continues to protect below

Q: If i use a wax / sealant on top of a coating will i still get the same wax / sealant durability?
A: Depends on how strong a coating's self cleaning properties are...something like OptiCoat will shrug off most things in around a month and more...on some coating you will get almost same durability as before from you favorite wax but yes durability will be reduced

Q: Can i also wax on a top of a nano sealant same as coatings?
A: Nope...the moment you put anything on top of a nano sealant apart from their own family of recommended products, it will interfere with the bonding and it will gradually fail.

Q: Will something like SRP or any other abrasive paint cleaner remove my coating?
A: First of all a coating will make cleaning much easier so you may not require a paint cleaner. But in case you do, it will be fine...any paint cleaner / coating will hardly do anything to the coating,

Q: How do i remove my current coating, i want to put on a new one?
A: The only way to remove a coating is by using a compound and machine polishing.

Excellent information Fordfan, I think you should also add Wolfs Chemicals Hard Body to the list.

Thanks for pointing it out...But see what I have been wondering is that can they be really called semi permanent coatings? Or is it an advanced nano coating?

See all coatings as mentioned above have two criteria which they meet unlike nano sealants

      * maintenance should not require specific products... Anything can be used

      * should not need re application every few months

I think hard body lasts around 6-9 months and needs Wolfs lineup for maintenence... Need to do more research and figure out

Think perhaps we should include the nano products also as people may find those much easier and define how they are different from coatings

Perhaps we can form a research group where members take up one coating / nano sealant and prepare a write up on that? So anyone interested?

Fordfan yes you are correct, I missed that, Hard Body does (for best use) require a maintenance product (similarly with the Nanolex nano range) especially to bring back the beading quality you see. It does last a long time I have it on my car now, and the other one used to have Nanolex applied.

But you're correct sealant products from Nanolex and Wolfs Chemcials should have a list too but with a distinction made as that might be useful.

Reviews please and lots of pics and application experience... You used Nanolex Ultra? And Wolfs HB or body wrap? And on paint or on wheels?

You in bangalore? I got System X Element 119 (coating) and Permanon Platinum Aircraft (nano)

And yes I agree that nano sealants should also have air time can you help a little please by listing down the exact product name please?

The biggest difference between nano sealants and coating is that they need products from same line up to maintain the protection (not only beading or Lotus effect or whatever they call it) ... Which is a pain if you already got a bunch of stuff invested in

Sorry, I am based in Punjab and occasionally have business in Delhi. I will try and together a more detailed post of applicator process

but for right now to continue the discussion my current car has Wolfs Chemicals Hard Body applied, further details can be read here (i wont duplicate the text):
Wolfs Chemicals Hard Body Nano Sealant 150ml - Detailed Clean

I think hard body is a little better wearing than most nano type sealants, once applied and sealed it does need maintenance but a little less, I hope that makes sense.

With regards Nanolex I didnt try the Ultra range, little too much for me to spend but I did try Premium Paint and Wheel sealant; it is this one:
Nanolex Premium Paint Alloy Sealant 100ml - Detailed Clean

I found this well wearing and was worth the cost, the only thing I would say about both of these is that how well they behave really depends on the prep work and how clean the paint/wheel is for them to bond too.

Once both of these are applied the car wash process does seem so much easier, crud is easy enough to just wash off.

do you mind if post your comments as a user feedback on the first post?...

Sanchit87 would like to post your quotes up there too
