      The "I Won't Honk" Initiative

An interesting initiative in Bangalore, endorsed by none other than Rahul Dravid.

      +1.

I remember the horn on my Linea stopped working a few months back. SInce the annual service was around the corner, I drove her without honking for about a month - no problems at all. You just need to be a little more alert.

It is actually less stressful when driving without honking. For those who are very skeptical, try it and see, you will be surprised

Practically, is this possible? In Bangalore, i mean? Being a seasoned driver, I'd rather honk and avert an accident than not honk and get bumped into.
If it pertains to normal honking with no rhyme or reason, then i've been doing it for quite some time already.
A suggestion is to distribute / sell quality 3M ear plugs at traffic junctions. This will help a lot better.

I try to avoid honking as much as possible. Even after purchase, I have in fact postponed installing the Stebel Nautilus for more than 4 years now since they are too loud. But the jaywalkers usually get my goat and I might one day install that 2x 139dB madness.

Morons/moronis on mopeds and scooties will jump across you from the pocket roads and will blame you for NOT honking I have experienced multiple times.

But yes, I try avoid honking as much as possible.

It may be practically impossible to avoid honking totally but helps a lot if its used sensibly. I usually try to avoid honking and in some unavoidable circumstances where a pedestrian is walking on the road/a biker riding in the centre of the road I use the horn as a beep to warn that I am crossing them. While overtaking a vehicle I usually flash lights about 2-3 times and use the horn only if the vehicle does not give me way to overtake.

When I started driving, I didnt honk much because I used to think It was rude, plus i figured my Indica's engine was enough for the job, but then I had many people, including my dad tell me that The way I overtake is rude, that I should honk before overtaking, or even if I'm just stuck behind someone to give notice that someone is there
      *Now with red horns!
