Would be such a boon if they implemented this ASAP. Sucks to be stuck in long queues at toll gates.

      Sounds good.
Prevents politically connected henchmen in private cars from creating a scene every time at tool booths since they consider themselves above the law and are "too poor" to pay tolls for which are more or less private roads these days.

Not really! I see the Electronic City Toll is being managed beautifully. I'm sure it can be done and implemented well.

That will still continue to happen. Certain Govt employees and politicians are "exempted" from paying tolls. Then there are "followers" who consider it their birth right to abuse their powers of knowing the influential. While I don't see that changing anytime soon, I do hope we have atleast 1 automated toll booth that others don't hog and is strictly used for those with RFID tags only.

I do not think computerization will solve this issue.

It can be solved by only two ways

      * these "poor" or "powerful" guys thinking that they are common citizens of this country and they also needs to pay
      * Toll Plaza authorities and Law enforcement gets tougher and enforcement happens on the spot or quickly so that offenders can be booked as per law.

i do not think both scenarios are possible. :-(

Computerization can only only bring certain transparency into what is already being followed and is opaque to certain extent.

I have experienced that toll staff complaining that computer is down, printer is not working, network is down, keyboard is stuck etc etc.

Locks are only for Honest people, Thieves anyway know how to break the locks or circumvent the system

I only wish that they really spend the money budgeted for the purpose.

Another potential area for theft, the RFIDs can be easily read using a reader and can be copied. If it works, that will be a good move by NHAI, but I really doubt.

+1 to that. How about the illegal tolls that are operated in some places ? Will they be looked at by NHAI at all ! In Chennai there are a handful of such tolls, which doesn't have a electronic gate, but are still run by the local goons, the so called politicos & enjoy the permanent income out of it.

Not sure about the security part, but I am quite sure there are some measures taken to prevent illegal access. But the ETC has already been implemented at the Electronic City Elevated Highway for over 1.5yrs now. tadukuttan uses it all the time when he goes to work. He has a box with a RFID tag inside his car that detects his vehicle passing through and deducts the amount from his "balance" automatically.

To get that one has to pay a security deposit. I'm sure Tadu will post a pic of the device soon for everyone to see. There is one dedicated toll specially for those with On Board Unit (OBUs) where others cannot take up space. As you near the toll, the OBU is discovered and the toll opens automatically and you just drive through!

Here are further details for those who want to read.

Even the people in the toll plazas allow white (white board) SUVs/ MUVs assuming to be some political party car. I have lot of instances in the past where I usually raise my hand to say one way or return and they allow me without collecting the toll amount. All that they say is "Neenga poolam Sir" (You can go Sir)

Time for you to buy a white SUV

Mclaren, also depends on traffic, similar kind of system is there in Gurgaon Delhi express way, 5 lanes dedicated to auto passes. But traffic still gets congested
