Smile Help needed to buy a diesel hatchback car

      Dear friends,

I am from Kerala.Presently i own a Alto-K10 Vxi.My average monthly traveling is 2000km (30% in town). I think i may go for a diesel hatch as most of the times the number of passengers will be 2 adults and a child.Occasionally 4 adults and a child that too for a maximum distance of 50km.The number of children may increase from 1 to 2. .My preference is a driver oriented car which is light on pocket in running and maintenance.

I did test drive some of the cars. Now the shortlisted cars are indica vista quadrajet, Indica vista D90,Fiat punto MJD emotion,Fiat punto MJD 90hp,cheverlet Sail-Uva.Now i am waiting for the test drive of facelifted Toyota etios Liva.i didnt try the Beat diesel.I would like to have the ABS and airbag option.I am really struggling to take a decision.

My intention is to keep the vehicle for at least 7 years.Experts please advise me.In my town only Maruti has more than one dealer(5 dealers and service centre). So i cant expect a competitive service cost for the other vehicles as all those brands have only one dealer and service centre.

Among the list that you have laid out, I love the Vista D90. In comparison, I think it's a complete VFM car. A decent engine mated to a decent package, very good interiors (by Tata standards) and generally seems like an over-all nice package to buy. However, where it won't score high is the point where you want it to be "driver oriented".

Why have you left out the Ritz and Swift?

Do TD all the cars and see what you like the most. Decide based on what your mind and heart says. Others can only help you to a certain extent. After all, the money is yours, it's you who has to live with the car for the next 7yrs. If it doesn't strike your heart first, then it's pointless

I have a concept ( misconcept) that swift and ritz are not so stable in highways. Moreover that Swift Zdi is too expensive.

Hatchback cars I consider driver oriented are Swift, Figo, Polo and Punto.

Swift looks like a good choice for you, though priced at premium but has all the features you want , e.g. driver oriented, good service network in your town, ABS, Airbag, moderate maintenance costs etc. Edit but it comes with a tiny boot.

Personally I am game for Figo among all, but may not suit you as it seems there is no Ford service center in Palakkad.

Swift handles nice, Ritz is a taller car so handling is a bit compromised. True, Swift ZDI has a premium price, but other drivers car which is left in this budget is Punto. Vista/Sail are nice but don't think we can call these driver oriented cars.

Drive everything to its limit in city and a bit of highway. There is no such thing as a better or best car. Everything is a compromise on a few parameters. Buy what ticks most of your boxes. What ticks most of your boxes may not tick any of mine, gittit?
Drive it like you stole it and Detail it like you own it.

Here we have the service centre of ford. But i am really afraid of notorious service expense of ford.Fiat is about to open their dealership and service centre by april. All the brands except maruti have only one dealer here.So the service will be their monopoly.I wont be having a option to switch the service to other dealer if i am not happy with the service of one dealer.Thats my concern. These matters pulls me towards ritz or swift eventhough i am not happy with their handling part.

To be very frank, after the TD of punto,i am a FIAT fan

What makes you think so? The Swift is a brilliant handler. The Ritz isn't bad either. It's just undertyred, actually even the Swift is undertyred. Get some nice alloys and fat tyres for the Ritz/Swift and you are good to go.

If handling is your prime concern, then look at Figo-Polo-Swift-Punto-Sail-Ritz-Vista in that order.

Again, among the above, Figo and Punto have underpowered engines! Polo engine is decent, but noisy as a tractor. Swifts engine is probably the most FTD followed by the Ritz. Vista lacks good handling manners when cornered hard. Definitely won't give you the same steering feel as the Figo/Polo/Punto.

That is why I suggested drive all these cars, push them a bit and see what pleases you!

Honestly Ford has some crap service centers up north but down south I have heard that Ford has some good ones. Check that what is reputation of the Ford service center in your area.

      Edit
You mean notorious service expenses or notorious service experiences? I guess experiences, maintenance expenses are similar to a common diesel hatch.

I am kind of addicted to Figo's handling, so much that ready to live with sub par quality services of Ford.

Trust me Swift handles pretty good, though I have limited driving experience with it.

Can i trust the vista for a 7 year long use?

i tried the indica ev2 (The one with the CR4 engine). The experience was horrible.Even my 99 model diesel contessa is smoother than the eV2.
