      TATA Sierra,
first automobile to be designed and produced in India. TELCO, erstwhile TATA Motors launches this product in 1991 when the entire market was used only to sedans and small cars. The car was the first diesel vehicle to be accepted as a personal car in India. It featured some firsts for Indian cars, such as adjustable steering, power windows, power steering and a tachometer. Sierra had an unique body styling with 2+1 rear door format which Indian automobile industry has never seen. Sierra was launched as a premium product in India with a price tag of over 5L, initially it had a huge waiting period and was sold at a premium of 50K. Both Sierra and Estate were considered as luxury vehicle and all business men and politicos bought one for their social status.

Sierra had its own set of issues, from oil leak to electrical failures to water leak. However this doesn't stop people from loving Sierra, Sierra had its own customers and it had a great presence, unique character, meaty looks and SUV styling. Passionate people have modded Sierra endlessly and even modified it with wing doors.

Sierra was sold with NA engine initially then it came with a turbo charged engine, it also had a 4X4 variant

Sierra slowly faded from the market due to its niggles and market acceptance, new brands which entered market gave a end of life to Sierra.

Sierra was available till later 2000 and TATA stopped production after Safari launch. But memories of Sierra still lives in many auto enthusiast and many including me would want to see Sierra in a new form back in road.

Now that industry is leaning towards pseudo SUV's, giving a re-birth to Serra would be logical step. Wish TATA Motors reads this thread and give a new lease of life to Sierra, members can post their wish list of changes you expect in a Sierra.

Sierra needs nothing but only a modern chassis and a torquey diesel engine. Its body style is enough to make it sell like hot cakes. While everyone recites that their childhood fav car was Safari, it hardly impressed me coz I never saw it come close to the beast it replaced, the mighty Sierra. In my apartment, I see a Tata Estate every day. Makes me wish that Tata would bring both of them back, with Sierra being more important. I can't think of a day when I'll get bored of Sierra's body and looks! Even the name is so awesome! SIERRA! Just love the side view! Those glass behind the two doors, so apt for a jungle safari!

Tata, Sierra must come back! And with vengeance!

I loved the Sierra when I was a kid. it would be pretty cool if Tata reintroduced it with the same styling and better stuff under the skin. they can do it, too, considering how the Xenon is.

This brings back some fond memories. Our Sierra was one of the 3 cars I learnt to drive when I was really young. Infact, Sierra was the first car I had my first accident in. Don't worry, no one was injured

We had 3 Sierras in the family! 2 NA and 1 TC'd. Both engines were pretty decent for their times. The seats were really comfy. The gearbox wasn't the greatest, but given that there weren't too many choices those days it was not too bad!

Where the Sierra failed was in the "practicality" test. Everyone in the family would crib about the 2 doors. Life would be a PITA for those who have to get into the back seat. And for the one who sits passenger in the front seat. Imagine if someone wants to stop for stretching on a highway trip. The co-driver has but no choice to get out and pull the seat forward.

Soon, the elders decided to get rid of the impractical Sierra and have it exchanged for the more practical Estate! Dad has still managed to retain his Sierra back in Hubli. We tried restoring it, but found that a lot of parts aren't easily available now or around 7yrs back when the first round of restoring began. So we just junked it.

Does it make sense to bring it back? No!

First to appeal to the current market, they will have to use the 2.2 Dicor engine! Revamp the entire interiors and bring in something really nice. Yet, the prime concern for the aam junta will be the practicality.

Tata will only end up wasting a lot of money and bring in more competition within their own market given that they have Sumo Grande, Tata Safari (old) and the Safari Storme to sell alongside.

All well and good. What about the reliability? (running for cover)

Before I get flamed, I loved the Sierra. A mate had one in silver. The 1st gen, not T/C.

I think all your wishes could come true, except for the one regarding the price

Sierra still is a good looking car.

Yes!! I remember a friend of my elder brother had one and whenever he came to our house, I kept staring his Sierra and one day he met us on our way and when he pulled down his black tinted power window, I was totally blown away. I have never driven one but I loved this car. I would love to see Sierra's re-birth!

Have one sierra in our neighbourhood still running perfectly. Every time I look at this car I wonder how good the TATA used to make cars those days. It still suceeds in getting the glimpse and appreciation more than a bimmer in its immediate neighbourhood. Even today it has got that road presence that makes head turn. The only car with glass top. Nice place to be in.
