Guys - can we please ditch this line of thought?

A person is planning to do something. Lets not get all het-up without even knowing what he is intending to do. If he wants suggestions of how he should be running it, he'll ask for it! Till then, lets all hold our peace.

Maps only provide basic way points and mostly "erroneous" timing.
But if you post your query to him, instantly he will send you the Logs which is more than enough.

Yes please wait for the further announcements in the coming weeks and months. Request the people not jump into details and assume things.

I did not know this. And it is really great to know his efforts for willingness to help anytime. This service would be really useful for the people travelling, but as Nomad has said in post, HV Kumar starting a new paid travel service ? - Page 2, not many people might be interested in paying up in India.

Guys, let's reserve the comments till we actually see what Kumar is planning to launch! I personally am going to look forward to it.

While at it, let's not make references to being better than Google Maps without actually seeing the product. Google has made a very potent product and let's us use it freely. It's an amazing tool in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. In a idiots hand, it can be a dangerous tool and could result in getting lost badly, though not as bad as the Apple maps.

What you need while using these devices is common sense and basic knowledge about directions. I'm yet to get terribly lost using Google Maps. It's saved me a few million times. Taken me to destinations without a fuss.

So in the end it's all about how wisely you use it.

Aditya, I know you mean good, but your superlatives are actually making your good intentions to help HVK sound like some faffing marketing talk. Please don't degenerate Kumar's hardwork with statements like these
      2002 Tata Indica DLS.
      2004 Suzuki Zen - A G13B eater.
2005 Suzuki Baleno - India's fastest Naturally Aspirated Baleno timed on a drag strip officially!
2008 Suzuki Swift VDi - The Rattle King.
2011 Chevrolet Cruze - The Torque Monster.
2016 Ford Ecosport 1.5 TDCi Titanium - The SQ Machine in the making.
2017 Skoda Octavia VRS - A 400+HP corner craving machine!
      2014 MOC SQ Pro Champions.
Harmonixx Tuning - Importers for Audiofrog & Arc Audio/APR Tuning Authorized Dealers/Engine Remap Specialists for all makes/models.
Dealers for Rainbow/Mosconi/Eton/Stetcom/Tru Technology/Blam Audio/Mobridge/Stetsom/Audible Physics/AIV/Gladen/Dampmat/Dr Artex Damping and more.

      Adithya R,

Like you, me too is a fan of HVK, I have a lot of respect for his knowledge and his passion to help people. I am to some extent aware of his public persona.

In India, something which is difficult to quantify is difficult to sell. We are not taught to pay some one for his help. We more than often take service and courtesy for granted. In such a scenario it is very difficult to sell something which is not quantified, not compelling and more so if previously it used to be available free.

If HVK does not become a capitalist, it is difficult for him to make people pay for his services. if he continues on free forums, anyway info is available free, then people will think why pay ?

I wish HVK all the success with this business model. I would be certainly interested to follow his success

Let's take this example - I had the Nexus 4 (running JB 4.2.2), and my good friend using iPhone-4 (running iOS 6). Both of us sitting next to each other in the same car, and using the same Wi-Fi hotspot from the same phone.

Here's the route G-Maps showed me:

... and here's the route suggested by the iPhone's map application:

Just about 8.5mi, and a difference of about 5 minutes in travel time, theoretically. Practically, the first route is even faster, as it's a highway-like road for the most part, and has free-flowing traffic - the logical choice. This difference will be magnified when it comes to longer routes.

I thought I will break a long silence to thank you for the good debate that is on.

Yes, information is free but the costs of compiling it & packaging it are not.
Today, online forums are superb platforms for collaboration and all of us here have been doing this all these years simply because we like to help each other & also because this information will not be exploited commercially.

We are also here because many mapping products have failed to live up to their billing & they simply do not address specific needs of motorists like us - for us, maps are not idle reference material but vital tools for planning & crucial info while on the road, hence we keep uncovering inadequacies in almost all of them, including G Maps & the Navigators in the market today.

That is where we as online communities have formed a bridge to uncover such lacunae and help ourselves.

For me personally, it has been very rigorous extending a helping hand to motorists - as Adithya has put it so aptly - and it is the choice to stop doing whatever I am doing or else find ways to institutionalise the process. Some of the ideas I am putting forth now are not new & I have had long discussions on these with the founding fathers of GH also in past years.

By automation and using modern mapping tools, I am hoping that we can help more motorists, make better use of the knowledge base we have gained over the years and also use our collective clout - as motorists in various online forums - to make various stakeholders look up (like hotels, police, etc) and get us the best deals (as in hotels). All these take lots of efforts & even though each of us does not look for personal compensation - despite the enormous amount of time spent - we have to recover the cost of technology development & maintenance, infrastructure costs & most importantly, the cost of hardware & data transfer costs which is the key to what I call a HiVayG - or Highway Guidance system - which works with maps interface, GPS devices, tracking software, hotel tie-ups, etc - all of which are created by us.

Needless to say, I continue to give & take info from & help all motoring friends, which is the true spirit of collaboration. We all do that, that is why we are here
      H V Kumar
