How old is your car? And how old is the battery?

Do you have the habit of switching the ignition on a waiting for 4-5 seconds until most of the lights on the dash disappear. I know a lot of friends who get into the car and just crank it not allowing the glow plug light to go away. That causes delayed cranks.

If your habit is correct, then you may have to take a look at the starter motor?

My car is 2 years old, sparingly used it has done 24000 km . Last month during routine service the battery was checked and found good .Could it be because of the STP diesel fuel treatment i am using ??

I highly doubt! I would narrow it down to a battery losing it's steam or a failing starter motor.

Anyways, let's wait for the rest to chip in. tadukuttan, Digital Vampire, 007, joeking.

starter could be deteriorating. or something inside your engine is expanding when hot and seizing somewhere causing resistance to the starter. do you use company specified oil or something else? did you add something to your oil to change its viscosity?

+1. Please get the battery load tested and the terminals cleaned at a battery shop. I've seen multiple starter motor failures on my wife's ford cars and that possibility cannot be ruled out either.

In fact batteries don't like them to be "sparingly used".

In my Ikon, the central locking happens a few seconds after turning on the ignition. If the crank coincides with the locking, there is a delay in cranking/starting.

But, I'd also doubt the battery first.

Before that I'd suggest you take your battery to a good battery mechanic and have him thoroughly check it once for dead cells!

Only then should you think about a replacement battery! I've been using Bosch batteries which are rebranded Amarons (?) . That's what I'd recommend.
