      Kawasaki Ninja 650R

India Kawasaki To Roll Out Ninja 650R priced Rs 4-5Lakh, assembled in India. The Baby Ninja, or the Ninja 250, which was launched last year is doing rather well. You can come across an occasional buyer complaining about people mistaking his precious motorcycle for a modified Pulsar, of course! But then that is what happens in India.India Kawasaki would get the bigger, meaner, Kawasaki Ninja 650R into India in 2010.
The bigger Ninja 650R would be assembled at the Bajaj Chakan plant where the baby Ninja is also assembled. And the brilliant part is that the motorcycle would be a CKD (completely knocked down kit) as opposed to an CBU (completely built unit, imported), which in turn would mean a big cut in taxes, and therefore price. We expect the price of the Kawasaki Ninja 650R to be in the range of Rs 4-5 lakhs. Worst case, the price might go up to Rs 6 lakhs. The Ninja 650R is priced at US$ 7100 in the US – that would be just Rs 3.14 lakhs in India! The rest of the price is due to excise duties, which are even higher at 110 per cent for CBU vehicles.

Other motorcycle manufacturers get their superbikes into India through the CBU route, attracting much higher import duties resulting in very high prices and making these bikes not affordable to many. But now with Kawasaki deciding to import the bikes as CKDs and then assemble them here, this should be a very big news to bike enthusiasts.

The Kawasaki Ninja 650R is an awesome motorcycle which has more than enough power needed on the Indian roads. At 650 cc, this is really not a superbike but a streetbike – not that it matters in India where chances of coming across another 650 cc bike are extremely rare!

Kawasaki Ninja 650R in India: Tech specs, engine and power

The Kawasaki Ninja 650R’s engine is a 649 cc parallel twin unit that produces about 70 horses and 66 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. On the paper this may not sound much compared to the other superbikes, but practically this is just what a bike enthusiast in India would need.

Engine: Four-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve per cylinder, parallel twin
      Displacement: 649cc
      Bore x stroke: 83.0 x 60.0mm
      Compression ratio: 11.3:1
      Cooling: Liquid
Fuel injection: Digital fuel injection with two 38mm Keihin throttle bodies
      Ignition: Digital CDI
      Transmission: Six-speed

The narrow trellis frame of the Kawasaki Ninja 650R holds a liquid-cooled, lightweight DOHC engine. The rider sits low and it feels lower due to the narrow frame. This is a bike on which you can ride all day long, and its excellent mid-range performance means you would really enjoy it on the highways. The handlebar, footpeg ergonomics are designed to suit a wide range of riders with different heights. The low seating enables the rider to plant both feet on the ground comfortably in traffic. The bike rides on attractive 6-spoke 17 inch tyres. The design of the bike is quite traditional, but there are enough aggressive touches to the fairing, lights and the flanks to make you feel cool.

Bajaj is planning to run a total of around 40 Probiking showrooms in India by that time. Later, India Kawasaki Motors would focus on bikes in the 200cc-plus category and have them either imported or assembled here.If you compare the Kawasaki Ninja 650R to the other superbikes that are sold in India, the 650R would sound like great value for money.

If Kawasaki gets the pricing of the Ninja 650R below Rs 5 lakh, it would beat other superbikes hollow in sales. It might even prompt other motorcycle companies to follow suit and set up assembly lines for CKD motorcycles here.

It would be a dream come true to buy a 600cc SBK for 6L legally in India. I do wish Bajaj go through with the CKD deal. I know a lot of friends who won't think twice to put their money down.

Frankly it is just 3.5L odd but just for some insane duty prices the bike price is almost 6L. But then compared to hayabusa's or ducatis which cost 15L this is a welcome price. So the next generation will be riding all Ninja's I guess

Welcome to the stupid taxation policy we Indians have. The scene is totally different in our neighbouring countries Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lank too where you will still probably be able to buy the Ninja 650 for 4L. By keeping such high import duties, what our Govt is doing is preventing these foreign manufacturers from bringing their vehicles into the country and ruin the Indian automotive industry (some stupid logic that). Which is why Hyundai etc have had to setup manufacturing plants here.

This started off to protect the M800 and those donkeys are just sticking to that rule made decades ago.

Absolutely right. Man not only cars, even anything related to automotive if bought outside then we have to give the same price as duty.

Looks crap. Why can't they get some good designers like Yamaha or Honda??
Even the Ninja 250, heavens sakes, have you seen the speedo on that bike?? I'd expect MUCH better when you gotta shell out some 2-3L for it.

BTW, the last pic you uploaded is the Ninja 250.

I love this only for one reason - Imagine a busa being available around 7L OTR & there will be a mad rush. Imagine the jokers who do not know anything on riding skills only to find themselves feeding under the Govt buses In a way, I still love the import tax & wish it were only going slightly higher every year UNTIL the country is educated on road sense!!!

That IMO is wishful thinking. And I don't see a reason why I should be paying twice the price than our neighbouring countries. We have sufficiently high powered cars that are available to the normal people (Swift D, Verna D etc). It should be left to the person if he wishes to ride responsibly or kill himself.
