Mahindra readies base ‘W4’ XUV500 variant:: Edit Launched at Rs 10.83 lakh

Sales of Mahindra’s golden goose, the XUV500, are not what they used to be some months ago. The SUV famously flew off the shelves and overshot Mahindra’s production capacity for the first few months after its launch, and even after that managed to hold steady at roughly 3,500-4,500 units a month – a really impressive figure for such an expensive SUV. However, lately, the company has only managed to find about 2,000 new XUV customers each month.

Mahindra says a big reason for this was the government’s new SUV tax, announced at the 2013 Union Budget, which instantly raised the price of the XUV500 and indeed Mahindra’s other mainstay SUV models. Also, the launch of the Renault Duster and, more recently, the Ford EcoSport will have certainly had an impact on the XUV’s sales. Mahindra has found a way around the SUV tax by lowering the ground clearance rating of the XUV500, but to further boost sales, it is also evaluating a lower-spec version of the popular SUV.

Likely to be called the W4, this base model XUV will have no changes to the exterior or the mechanicals, although like the W6, it will be 2WD only. The W4 will get a more basic infotainment system and an air-con unit without automatic climate control, and will do away with convenience features like rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlamps.

However, although the spec has been finalised internally, Mahindra has not yet green-lighted this new variant for showrooms. This is because it wants to see if the W6 and W8 variants (now with lower prices thanks to the new ground clearance rating) manage to re-ignite the sales charts. Mahindra is looking at a target of about 3,000 units a month, and if it can meet this with the existing models alone, the W4 will be kept on hold.

Mahindra XUV500 W4 launched at Rs 10.83 lakh

New XUV500 W4 variant comes with the same engine and kit like dual airbags, projector headlamps, ABS with EBD and remote central locking among others.

The entry level W4 model of the Mahindra XUV500 is powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that puts out 140bhp and comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Standard kit on the W4 variant includes projector headlamps with LEDs, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, disc brakes all round, tilt-adjustable power steering, electric wing mirrors, and remote central locking, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat and foldable second and third row seats.

Speaking at the launch of the W4 model of the Mahindra XUV500, Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director and president, automotive and farm equipment sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra. said, "The XUV500 has resonated very well with our customers since its launch and has since become a trendsetter within the Indian automotive industry. With over 74,000 vehicles on the road within two years of launch, the XUV500 is one of our most successful launches. As a customer centric organisation, we have incorporated customer feedback at every step and evolved and today's W4 model launch bears testimony to the same".

Wow man even on a basic model they have given dual airbags and ABS. Wonderful step towards passenger safety.

But the 10.83Lac is OTR cost?

Yes should appreciate Mahindra on this front. Unlike Maruti to reduce cost they didn't strip off everything to give a bare chassis + engine. Thoughtfully done I say, giving safety a priority.

No, Ex-Showroom Delhi. Would be 11.8 to 12.5 I believe with all these insurance & Road taxes.

Same as present models. No visual changes on the exterior except missing fog lamps, parking sensor, and on the interior the diwali lights on the ceiling is just present in the front 2 rows, No touch screen display not even monochrome, guess a Media player like the one in Scorpio would be present. Most of the jigina's have been removed. Guess W4 will have the longest battery life

Greatly appreciate Mahindra now. Even though they brought a more economic version. They havent stripped it down of the basic needs like ABS airbags etc.
This version is going to cause great discomfort to duster, terrano etc . Xuv dream comes closer for many.

True that. May be even EcoSport *might* have some pressure. Duster & Terano definitely a problem.

Yup all same minus some lot of bulbs & interior visuals. Have a look at the features which I've posted from the XUV site.
