      Following my AuRaL EMoTiOn

I feel obliged to write this build log (and boy its going to be a long one!) because I feel its my duty to acknowledge and document how much the gearheads forum helped me make my dream come true. I am sure I could not have achieved even a fraction of what I have currently without the help of this forum. It is worthy to note that there's not one audio equipment in the car which was bought outside the gearheads classifieds! This forum offered me a chance to meet and learn from like-minded, extremely helpful, humble, and down to earth individuals who shared a pure passion for attaining audio ecstasy.

So starting my built log on that note.

It all started on Dec 2011, so nearly 2 years back I had just joined gearheads and was on the phone with IronMan (who was Gump back then) when the story began!

Exactly 5 months before that day I had to kiss my beloved VW polo goodbye. It was a pre worshipped purchase which I drooled over for months before its launch, driving it over and over in my head. It had some minor issues but it was a pleasure to own. It even had a decent clean sounding audio install done at Speedfreaks, Chennai with a pioneer 4250sd, 2 blaupunkt amps powering Kicker 2 way in the front and kicker sub. I had my ipad mounted in the Dash. The install costed around 28k and it was a huge deal to me at that time.

All was fine, until one fine day i met with a major accident while on the polo. It was a horrifying experience but I survived with a fractured arm and a dislocated hip which took me around 2 months to recover but unfortunately the polo was crushed and became un salvageable. The insurance people declared it a total loss and refunded the IDV. I was heart broken for a while.

I had to move on, start from scratch again and ended up buying the etios (G) and I made a firm resolve to myself to stop spending carelessly and invest on only the absolute basic accessories for this car, because my parents, despite the accident, which happened because of my careless driving, gave me a second chance and bought me the etios without any hesitation.

So with that mindset I was lurking around gearheads looking to buy a basic head unit to power the stock oem components when I found IronMan thread for a Pioneer 5250 sd ( Pioneer 5250SD Head Unit for sale - Chennai) and was over the phone with him. And this guy instead of selling his headunit to me starts to explain to me all the reasons I should look at a better HU and actually persuaded me away from buying his headunit! I felt that this more than anything was a start to my current install because had I gotten the 5250 SD i would have just stagnated there and wouldnt have even bothered to look higher.

It was just me in the drivers seat without a seatbelt and i escaped with relatively minor injuries. Have to give kudos to Volkswagen for not compromising on the build quality. Even after the vehicle toppled twice the roll cage was left unscathed.

      Continuing from the first post.

So the lurking began again this time for a Alpine 9886 because it had so much potential to go higher than just a basic head unit with the ability to add an imprint kit which makes one go active with crossovers plus get goodies like peq and time alignment. Managed to find one locally for 11k so went ahead with my install and surprisingly it sounded really good especially in terms of the stage depth and width compared to my VW polo. In the polo, although the tonality was good everything sounded constricted and more towards you if you turn it up even though the treble wasnt harsh, gets too loud too soon but it wasnt the case in the etios. Its was impressive for a system with stock OEM speakers.

I wanted to take it one step higher so lurking again pounced on the Imprint kit (3 Months Old Alpine CDA-117 Head Unit and Imprint PXA-H100 for Sale!!!
      Sale!!! ) from Pr_007 .

Now I became the guy who had an excellent headunit with a processor and paired it to an unjustifiable pair of oem components. So again the dark voice awakened and all i could think about day and night was that the install sounded so clean with just the oem components so the potential leap in sq was huge by upgrading just the components alone.

And then i met someone who'd jetpack me into the world of high end car audio, someone who made me take the leap of faith and never look back, someone who attracts you with his politeness and wins you over with his patience and humility.

As with getting any new audio equipment I had to first make sure what I wanted. Being a headphone aficionado I have made several mistakes in making wrong choices and buying equipment which didn't suit my tastes. And I was familiar with audiophile glossary and I was good in knowing what sound signature I preferred thanks to the numerous in ear monitors I've owned and detailed reviews from veteran audiophiles about their sound signature highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
My taste has always been toward very dynamic natural sounding drivers having a tight, impactful bass response with a crisp, prominent midrange which didn't sound congested and always had a bit of air and non fatiguing detailed highs. Deep, wide staging and instrument separation was of utmost importance to me.
So with that in my mind I started my search. I tried searching for reviews on various component systems the way I searched for earphones but I was shocked and surprised to find there were very few independent / standard review sites to review these components objectively and there was no standalone /relative grading of any of the components which was in contrast to how it was in the headphone world. So with forums as my only guide I began the search with what little I knew.

Getting to read a build log that extends beyond the equipment after a long time

Really refreshing to see such a ICE journey being documented with all related experiences.

      Bring it on itsvel06

I started with forums like diyma and talk audio and scanned for threads which hinted on the sound signature of various components. I was aware of a certain ownership bias which are prevalent over all the forums, so I was very skeptical about reviews and I learnt to prefer brands with less overall weakness with the sound signature I liked. Certain brands caught my eye more frequently than others. DLS, CDT audio, Rainbow, Hybrid audio, image dynamics and the one that attracted me the most, Morel.
Laid back, transparent, smooth, detailed were the adjectives used to describe its drivers and I knew straight away that was what I wanted.
Trying to look through reviews and experiences about morel, I found ( Kick Starting the ICE Revolution with my Fiesta 1.6 S - Page 70 ). 70 pages of obsession. Install logs, experiences, reviews, madness it was all there. It felt like someone had already done my work for me. That thread not only had obsession but also passion and craving towards achieving a heart filling sound like nothing I ve seen before, so much so that that the entire car was modified and a lot sacrifices including AC vents were made just so that the components to fit in and perform their best. So I started reading through the thread from the beginning instead of searching through randomly I got to about page 5 when I became sure of one thing, I was not going to choose components better than Mi10 . He had just put up ( Exiting out of Car Audio - Mega Sale of High end Equipments, Carputer parts and more ). So upgrade time again!

So there I was at Mi10 s doorstep all enthusiastic with my new found love for these components. I reached there at around 11 at night because of the traffic and i wasnt familiar with velachery, his locality. I was expecting a ****ed off equipment dealer who was more 'to the point' and someone who tells rather than who listens and explains but it was totally the opposite.
And he took me to audition his hybrid audio clarus components in his verito and we ended up talking about music tastes about how he got sucked into car audio and then he took me to show what i went there for the Morel MT22 tweeters, the CDM 88 midrange and Hybrid ovation midbass. Man they looked too beautiful to resist the temptation to touch and i touched the midrange silk dome and Praveen almost had a heart attack and slowly took the drivers away from me to their safety. He explained to me the concept of quasi active setup for accomodating a 3 way front stage and a woofer with 3 preouts from the cda 9886.

So now the question came about which amp to use and then it stuck me how much out of budget it was all for me!! I let praveen suggest me one and he suggested the Celestra FA 475x for the components and he told me that a friend of his was having one for sale for 23k. So it was decided. I had close to 37k in my account and i had just finalized a deal for 67500 including the crossover and rockford twisted RCAs and there was a woofer to buy still.
I mentioned my financial status to him and told him that I d be able to make the payment in parts and I warned him before hand that i might be late in repaying him. He accepted graciously. I was late in making most of the payments but not even once did he question about the reason or show the slightest hint of frustration. If it wasn't praveen I wouldn't have even dared to ventured into this costly affair.

So with the front stage out of the way the hunt for the SQ sub began and ( JL W3 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ) which hareshjethwani had for sale caught my eye. It was a very efficient, fast and a typical SQ woofer which didnt require too much power. i conferred with praveen and asked haresh to hold it for me. And I met Haresh at the Chandru Auto store. It was a busy shop with haresh in his back room. I asked for him and I was escorted there and I was surprised he seemed really familiar. His attitude the way he spoke, his mannerism, his hair style, boy I was sure I had seen him somewhere!!! And then it stuck me where I had seem him! Guys remember this guy?

If, instead of selling illegal diamonds in Delhi Belly, the villain was a better looking car audio equipment retailer, you got hareshjethwani !!!
So haresh sat me down and we talked about my upcoming install and again not even once did he make me feel like im his customer but rather treated me like his friend. So now the question came to the amplification for the sub I was already broke, but luckily the amp from my VW polo, a Blaupunkt GTA ii spl mk ii survived and was sufficient to power the W3. So went ahead and got that one. So with all the equipment in place only the install was pending!
