Wish there were some gauges to show the no of revolutions done by the engine. It would be an measure of oldness of the engine.

Its not just the used car dealers who tamper the meters. In the recent times, I've seen at least 2-3 30-50L+ worth cars owned by HNIs with grossly tampered odometers.

Taking my original discussion further, lets do some further calculations:
Suppose you idle for a total of 7 minutes in traffic for a day. (Incidentally, this number is genuine from my polo days).
Assuming the engine idles at 750 rpm (my #Figo further does, more or less hover there) So that's 750 revs per minute. So the "useless" revs on that particular day would be 7 minutes X 750 rpm = 5250 rpm.
If we extend this to a month (30 days) we have 750 X 7 X 30 = 157500 revs that are not moving the vehicle even 1 click.
Now. Lets assume that on an average we travel in 2nd gear in bumper to bumper traffic.
If we "equate" these revs to km say in 5th gear (highway) It would translate to (will get back to you after doing the math).

For car like swift diesel, 100 kmph at 2500 rpm in top gear. That is 100 km in 2500*60 revolutions. So a car like swift diesel will travel just around 105km in 157500 revs in top gear

To be frank, we cannot calculate the health of an engine with the ODO reading.
ODO reading is an indicator that shows how many Kms the car had done. Here, not only the engine but all the other components come into picture.
We can know that the engine, transmission & other parts had taken the beating for those many Kms.

Generally, if someone is going to buy a pre-owned car, they will be checking the Year of make & the Kms the car had clocked apart from the look & feel, how well it is maintained, whether serviced on time etc. But one thing we miss out here is how the car is used before.
A car's engine which had done 40K Kms on the ODO can be better than a car's engine which had done 20K Kms on the ODO.
Say that the 20K Kms car is not maintained & serviced on time including the engine oil change, we cannot expect the health of it to be great.
Also, the engine might be abused by the previous owner.

You know i thought of this and the conclusion i came to is that ODO shows only number of KM he wheels have traveled. Technically, I can keep the engine switched off and tow the car around for X number of KM. The ODO will still turn but the engine has not turned in this case. So my conclusion is that ODO only gives number of km the wheels have turned (if one wants to be really anal about it, the driving wheels only) and that too not necessarily on its own power.
Yes i know this is an extreme case, but in theory this is how it works and there could be a possibility of some crack person (not very much different from the OP of this thread) who would go ahead and do this.

Ok. Now here comes the question... Does the ODO reading include the Kms car had done in reverse gear?
Does the gauge(you are talking about here) take care of that?

      First point, no.
Second point yes because it should be able to connect to a section of the crankshaft which is always spinning in one direction only (under normal operating conditions - it should not go kaput).

Stop and go city traffic is what kills engines! So yes, engines hate our city traffic!

When you buy a car, ideally what you must look for is low running, well maintained history and service records, some visual inspection of the car should give you a brief story.

Other things once must also consider is the city you buy the car from. Cities like Bangalore etc are notorious for traffic jams! Long and annoying ones! I'd be vary wary of buying a car in cities like these because of the additional wear and tear the engines go through thanks to the godawful traffic!

As far as possible, I never use my cars in the city! Prefer using a second car to deal with the traffic and have the Baleno or Cruze for only late night drives inside city where traffic is considerably lesser or for highway drives.

In essence one must always look at the kms clocked on the odo, evaluate what city the car comes from and the traffic conditions there, service history and only then take a call! I'd be more wary of cars near the sea thanks to the rust issues! Buying cars from Bombay etc is a complete NO NO....
