      Choosing the right Extension Box

I need to run an extension box from a power outlet on the first floor balcony of my apartment to power my rotary polisher on the ground floor. The motor in the rotary is rated 12A/1250W.

Was wondering if I should get an extension box with a particular power rating or anything like that? Do such thing exist here? Or should I just buy the regular ones sold at electrical shops?

Please also suggest some good quality extension boxes. I'm looking to get the best one out there to avoid risking hazards of any sort. Tagging some experts Dinesh Sachdev Digital Vampire

Why do people post I want the best for my car... When there isn't anything that is the best on the car to begin with.

      Hi Keerthi,

As you would be using it for the rotary motor of 1250 Watt, I would suggest you to make an extension box with good quality conduit wires with male and female socket at the ends.

The best will be to use Conduit box of Anchor / Legrand make on one end, and 15 Amp socket on the another. hope it helps you.

      Cheers !!!

      Hi Keerthi,

With the length of wire you would be looking for, around 10 + Mts, I am not sure if any standard extension boxes will be having this much length of wire.

Secondly you can choose the best quality wires havell / finolex and sockets if you go for it. It is not a rocket science you just need a good quality wire and attach it to the box.

You can procure these items at any electrical shop and ask the person to set it up for you.

      Cheers !!

Word of caution: Please be informed that this "extension" may be against the EB laws (though I've seen many people do it).
I'm not sure how flexible these laws are in Chennai, but in the apartment complex where I stay (Bangalore), KEB fined 30K each for ~4 families involved in doing this "extension". Those residents were doing the "extension" to get some carpentry work done in the basement.

Some builders do provide an electrical outlet near the car parking for charging electric cars. I'm told, this is done with a special permission.

The watch uses extension full time to power his fan, phones, TV etc. The EB guy collects the power cards of tenants from him to note down the readings but haven't seen him being concerned about it. Why would it be unlawful to extend a connection from my own apartment? I do have power outlets at the car parking but don't want the biggies raise a concern on that.

I'm told that doing so without written permission and approval from the EB is unlawful (amounting to criminal negligence) even for temporary purposes.
How it is done in many parts of India is anyone's guess ;-)

Don't thin you don't need to worry about taking an extension in Chennai. Most of the friendly neighborhood video and photographers do it for years. They perhaps can even help you with making an good extension box/

Very flexible in Chennai, DV. During construction works in house, most of the time, an extension box was used to run the drilling machine from first floor to 2nd & 3rd floor. In a even more bigger extension example I can give, couple of years back during a festive season, for a god's procession (Kovil ther oorvalam we call in tamil), they could not get genset & they ran with 250m extension wire to power the serial set & focus lights in the cart. Couple of us in the streets agreed to power the cart. Now howz that

Especially if its some politico wedding, we've seen tube lights running up & until 1 km stretch with those extension wires !

And you can imagine how flexible it is here in TN
