Todays E-Waste Crisis, Scientists Warn - VICE

"No technology comes without cost. The lithium-ion batteries that EVs run on are made from metals that are mined at a serious environmental and human toll, and from supplies that won?t last forever. When those batteries die, they?re liable to join the tens of millions of tons of spent electronics piling up as e-waste in landfills around the world."

Yup, obvious fallout, but conveniently forgotten in the name of clean technology.

For the West this is no problem. They jist dump their garbage in Asia and Africa.
I saw huge garbage dumps with plastic in Malaysia. Most of them were from Australia and the EU.

This will be fun. Norway with 250,000 electric cars have 13,000 chargers and there have been fist fights at charging stations. They have been building charging stations for 25 years.
Generally people are calm here and law abiding and road rage is extremely rare. Empathy is hammered into school kids from from the first class.
Lack of this empathy during a driving test can fail you. These 13,000 stations except Tesla's are also heavilly subsidized.
To charge from home safely, you need to install a special charging point. The ordinary household plug is a fire risk.

1000 Km Range, 30% Cheaper: Firm Overhauls Charging Tech for E-Cars

      Recyclable aluminium cells?
      Environment friendly?
      Long range?

Sounds interesting but not gonna take off because the existing automobile giants have huge investments piled up in the conventional electric tech which they want to recover before shifting onto anything 'new'. Same like how they didn't allow the electric tech to grow when it was already available a century ago because they had huge investments in the fossil fuel and tech which they were expecting to recover in the next 100 years. Now that receovery period is over so we will have to shift into 'new' electric tech because the market power wants that. But the challenge is pollution at the source of electricity generation plants and pollution caused by dumping of batteries in the upcoming years.

I wonder if there will be pollution at source of electric plants in countries like India. Combined solar, nuclear and hydro should be enough.

Interestingly electricity demand is falling as equipment gets more and more efficient.

For example 12 years ago, on a typical evening, I was using around 300-400 watts at any given time. Today that number is around 150-250 watts. And that's after adding new members to the family.

I think we will have lot of spare electricity in the coming days. Running cars with electricity is one way to use it up.

Tata Nexon EV test drive and impressions

Yesterday, I was lucky to have to the opportunity to test drive the Nexon EV.

The car is started by a push button start stop while holding down the brake pedal.

Turn the drive selector knob into the appropriate drive mode to move the car.

Interiors look similar to the regular Nexon.

Once slotted into the Drive mode D, the car starts to move slowly and gently with the press of the A pedal. The AC took around 1-2 mins to chill down the cabin.

The car felt super smooth, no noise and vibrations at all. Flooring the A pedal gave quite a good response. The torque delivery was nice.

Some info which I managed to gather from the TATA personnel who had bought the car for exhibition and TD.

      1) Torque is rated at 315NM.

      2) The car has a range of 260 KMs on a single charge (TATA claims 300KMs in their ads) and a charge time of 8 hours with regular charging and 1 hour with quick charging.

      3) Only 4 quick charges can be made throughout the entire life of the battery. The battery is rated for 2500 charge cycles of regular charging which equates it to roughly 6.5L - 7L kms of battery life. Standard 12V socket is used for charging. Separate quick charger is also provided.

      4) Bookings are open, but deliveries not yet started.

Popping up the hood, I made a few observations.

Regular automotive Exide battery also included, I wonder for what purpose ( starter ? )

Regular brake fluid chamber, meaning the brakes are mechanical and no brake energy regeneration ?

With the given range and charge time, feel that it's best suited for daily commute and driving around the city.

The car definitely has a novelty factor being an EV as a lot of heads turned around when I was doing the TD .
