      Power Steering oil leak

      Hi All,
I've ford ikon 2002 model and few days before I checked with the mechanic for long drive general checkup.
I came to know power steering oil leakage. As per the discussion with mechanic, the repair or change of the component would cost around 8000 Rs. and as of now I could top up the power steering oil and take a drive.

I would like to know whether it cost 8000 for the issue or they are trying to make money out of my pocket.
      Please suggest,

What mileage has the car done? Where exactly is the oil leak? From the pump, hose or steering rack? Have you checked the hose to the oil cooler behind the grill?

      Same questions as Indian.

And skmoorthy02, please do get us a picture, and we can tell you how much it should cost. And it might even be more than the 8000 the mechanic quoted you.

If you can tell me what needs to be replaced, I can find out the cost from my local parts dealer and tell you if it indeed costs that much.

Having worked on a couple of old Fords, the availability of spares is so tough that sometimes you end up paying slightly more than what you would at the F.A.S.S.

That is a general term. Same question as Indian... where is the leak?

Anyways, I do know that OE power steering rack of ikon is on the expensive side. If entire rack with pump, hose etc. has to be replaced it goes way beyond 10k in bombay for sure. I am tagging catalyst_delhi. He owns the ikon, and he is the best person to tell you specifically about the prices. Or if he doesn't respond, you can send him a PM to know the prices.

Krish, please take the car to your mechanic, ask him to spot the leak and then take a pic in a well lit condition. If you are not sure, ask the mechanic the questions experts have asked you here.

Also, when replying please quote the query and provide your response against it. It will be easier for all of us to see and comprehend.

Am not sure which part has the leakage, Today I will call up my mechanic and get more details on the question and update it by tomorrow.

      Thanks

As I understand your post you have a serious leak. There should be tracks of servo fluid somewhere. Look for dripping with the car in idle and turning the steering wheel left and right. Look through the grill to see if its wet with fluid there. The oil cooler is a simple loop with 2 thin tubes attached and placed in front of the radiator. This is the point I use to empty the fluid reservoir when I change the fluid. If the hose is disconnected or broken its takes only seconds to empty all the fluid.
Run your hand all around the reservoir under the bonnet to check if wet. The filler cap is normally light green or black.

It all depends where the leak is from - If it is from the steering rack - around 5k , hoses and pipes - 2k ( hard to get) from bottle - can fix with plastic glue gun. Put a cardboard under the bonnet and check where it is coming from. Do not run with a PS fluid leak. skmoorthy02. You can get the entire steering unit for 8k in the scrap yard.
