Kenwood KDC X-7016 plays Apple Lossless

I'm literally baffled to see that my Kenwood 7016 HU is able to play Apple Lossless (ALAC) files. I bought this unit back in 2011 and I was a happy ICE-nut listening to my MP3 encoded files. As my interest grew and senses were broken-in, I started cursing myself for not getting a HU that could play lossless formats. Yesterday, I completely reset my iPod and loaded up some ALAC files and bingo 7016 played them right off. A quick flip into the manual reconfirmed no references supporting any lossless formats let alone ALAC. Someone please explain this.

keerthi please try if the HU plays the same apple lossless files via USB

AAC-LC means Lossy Compression and this is not a lossless format.

If you are able to play the file using iPod then the iPod DAC is being used as well to decode the file.

Your HU is not decoding the ALAC files. Its your iPod which decodes the files & sends sound signals to the HU through its DAC. Just consider an example of the iPod Dock speakers. You can simply dock your iPod & enjoy sound through the speakers. Does that mean the speakers have circutary to decode the files ? No. Mine is a much older HU than yours. Its Pioneer DEH-7950UB & it still supports ALAC & also WAV playback through iPod (iTunes 11 supports WAV files directly dropped in to it). It doesn't support iPad though.

I don't think it will be supported.

This is surprising. I thought the HU bypasses iPod's DAC. Or is it just for ALAC files the iPod's DAC is being used here?

Yes sir that's why I asked .. If the HU can play those files on USB directly then it would definitely support those formats.

The manual showed AAC-LC .. that's why pointed this out

For all formats the iPod DAC is being used here actually .. I don't think there is selective bypassing based on the file format

If you are connecting your ipod via a 3.5 mm jack, the signal is already analog - which means the DAC inside the ipod has already done its job !

So...that seals the story and a lot of excitement

Mi10 iPod is connected via the 30-pin/USB interface. Hence was wondering if 7016 is bypassing iPod's DAC. No aux-in in the HU.

keerthi, iPOD DAC will not be bypassed by your HU even if you connect via iPod Cable.

When I researched about this back when I was going to purchase the HU, some internet resources said otherwise. Seems I was misinformed Even the manual doesn't talk about this feature. Here is what Crutchfield said about the bypassing-iPod-DAC feature. (I believe the X994 US model is same as X7016 Asian version sans bluetooth. No?)

Hook your iPod to the receiver's USB input, and you'll bypass your iPod's digital-to-analog converter, allowing Kenwood's superior 24-bit DAC to make your files sound their best. If you're not using an iPod, you can load up a thumb drive with MP3, WMA, and AAC files and connect it to the rear USB input. You'll also find a rear auxiliary input for MP3 players and other audio sources.
Why all this fuss? I'm not a big fan of iPod's DAC. Its quality leaves a lot to be desired. I think I'm gonna have to write a ACD off the ALAC files and try comparing the SQ of HU's DAC vs iPod's.
