From Beat to Beast... Optra Magnum LT TCDI

All started when I went with my cousin to test drive a Skoda Rapid. A thought started processing in my mind to look for new car… Well, a Used “New” car… Cut to the past – I was driving a Chevrolet Beat, 2011 model, LT petrol. Bought it new from showroom and have been doing really good, except the fact that it’s a small car and not that good of a performer.

I always loved diesel machines for the torque and turbo feel. But again was keeping myself happy with the Beat saying that I would not need a diesel engine for the monthly driving I do which is around 600 kms with some occasional long drives. But this time, having made up my mind to change my car, I wanted to go for a diesel just for the “push me to the seat” feeling.

So a decision was made to sell off Beat. A few days of ad posting and responding - I got someone to do the business. Now, at the same time I was looking out for Optra magnum. Thoughts changed from Linea to Civic(again a petrol) and then finally to Magnum. Although people were against it as it is a discontinued car with a little dated feel, I was all bowled by the space, the engine and the comfort of it.

Cars scouted – Main criteria was to look out for a less driven, single owner, beyond 2008 model vehicle:

White Magnum LT TCDI - 2009

Came across a white Magnum with 40K on the odo genuinely driven with records. The deal was through a dealer. Took the test drive and did best to my knowledge inspection and back ground check. Car looked clean except that the bumpers and trunk were repainted. It was early 2009 model with well-maintained body line. All research, discussions done I sat for the negotiations. It did not go that well, since the car was genuine, the dealer wasn’t negotiating much. This went for a couple of weeks and I decided to increase my budget and seal the deal.

Red Magnum LT TCDI – 2010

Just on the day on making the payments, I saw an ad on a website – 2010, Red magnum with 36k on the odo but the budget was way higher than mine. But still dropped a message to the seller asking if he was ready to negotiate. I think luck swerved my way, he was up for it. Put the white magnum on hold and looked at this car. This is directly through the owner, so the ray of trust was higher. Saw the car and loved the color. Very well maintained, serviced every 5k, genuine odo and very neat body line. The owner explained all the history of the car. Took a drive and it was as good as new. Negotiated hard and the owner obliged to it. Got the deal finalized for at a little over the white magnum and paid the advance. Next day, made the payment and got the Pre Worshiped Magnum home on 7th Jan 2014.

Congrats Sanjay. Great choice! Pre-worshipped will be more apt for it.

How about getting it remapped? I recently read about a Code6 tuned Magnum which is faster than many remapped Cruze owned by our forum members.

      Thanks a lot buddy.

I did research about the remap before buying the car. Since I just moved from a petrol beat to magnum, I can feel a lot of punch in driving the car already Also there are some budget constraints now. So I definitely have it on cards.. May be a few months later

What ever tuning you finally approve for your car do make sure the EGT before the turbine is not more than 800 degrees at WOT.

Thanks for the tip drpullockaran. This upgrade will surely take sometime. I will definitely keep these points when I go for it.

Thanks nitin. I would enjoy the stock engine for sometime now. Will go for a remap sometime later this year when I have some Vitamin M

Have not got the chance the to take her on the highways yet. I doubt my wife would let me cross that mark. I will let you know the experience if I could do that anytime

Guys, any pointers how should I go about upgrading the ICE. I would retain the stock HU and looking for just the speaker upgrade at this moment. Would appreciate some guidance on the setup and expected cost.
