      GM's new Ecotec engine

General Motors (GM), has unveiled their new line-up of Ecotec engines which are slated to arrive in both three- and four-cylinder applications. The engines will underpin many of the company’s highest-volume small cars and compact crossovers through the end of the decade, and will be first introduced in the Opel Adam and the Chevrolet Cruze, a car specially tailored for China.

A total of 11 engines including the turbocharged versions, with three- and four-cylinder complete the Ecotec family. The displacement ranges from 1.0 to 1.5 litres. The engines are capable of producing power ratings between 75PS to 165PS and torque ranging from 95Nm to 250Nm.

I also read somewhere that by 2017, 27 models in the GM brand will be powered by this engine family. Production of Ecotec engines will take place in five global locations, China, Hungary, Mexico, South Korea and the United States however, India is not listed to make these engines.

GM compares their 1.4-liter Ecotec engine with VW and Ford saying that noise intensity is up to 50-percent quieter than Volkswagen’s EA211 1.4L four-cylinder TSI (seen on the Jetta TSI and Octavia TSI in India) and up to 25-percent quieter than Ford’s 1.0L turbo three-cylinder (seen on the EcoSport in India).

Guru-ji, the trend now is to downsize the engines without compromising on performance. The American mentality of bigger-the-better is slowly giving way to small-is-beautiful. Among the Big-3 of North America, only Chrysler is slow in catching up with the GDI trend.

India has been off of US radar for quite some time. Their main focus is on China only.
