      The Fiat Punto 90 HP (erstwhile Punto Sports)

      Fiat seems to be out to win hearts of all those who felt the GP craved for more power. Fiat India has offcially confirmed the launch of the "Punto 90 HP" - no Punto Sports here - in the middle of July. The VGT from the Linea has been plonked into the GP and this should alleviate all those fears of the GP being 'underpowered'. We are all waiting with abated breaths to see the pricing of the car. IMHO if it is around 20-30k cheaper than the i20 1.4 CRDi Asta, Fiat have a winner on their hands. Furthermore with the reports of Tata-Fiat's service getting better by the day.

      Read the autocar test drive , there is hardly 1.2 sec difference from the fgt engine to 100.

      fgt- 17.84sec vgt-16.4sec

      ^^^^ I'd rather not go by the ACI figures. They are crap. Moreover Carwale and ET have given much better reviews than ACI.

      Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the auto mag reviews myself. Best is to TD it yourself.
      I must admit that fiat actually trying to remedy the underpowered label of the Punto, really surprised me.
      Hope they carry on the momentum by bringing in the 1.9 and the 1.6 diesels

      16.4 secs is SLOW. I could probably manage to get a small nap by the time the needle hits 100kmph

      At best even with a box/remap you won't get a 0-100 figure of less than 14 secs.

      Swift is surely faster, mostly even the Vista is too?

      Barney, I hope you do realize that ACI uses a Racelogic VBOX to test the figures. And a VBOX is one of the most accurate devices you get in the world now.

      Not a very slick gearing, and ratios add to the 0-100 figures.

      How relevant is 0-100 for day-to-day driving ? Talk of driveability instead - I wish the gearshift was made slicker and the 2nd gear taller.

      @sdp ... very correct. I think with this increase in power, it wont be the sudden gush like the Swift, but with the Punto's handling and driving dynamics, this will be one helluva car! What says @mac?

      Sorry, but I guess I come from a different school of thought. When I talk about handling and driving dynamics I would like to co-relate to it to the acceleration a car is capable of and how fast it can reach a corner to test the cars handling limits. The ONLY way to test the handling capabilities of a car is to drive it as fast as you can into a bend.

      There is no point in having a brilliant handling car but an engine that is a big disappointment. Point in case the Swift D (and I happen to own one). I hate that engine, its slow. It does not do justice to the handling capabilities of that chassis. So imagine my opinion about the Punto now. Lol. But I am told there are very few who think the way I do. So don't take my opinion seriously.

      However, it is very disappointing (for people like me) to see Fiat churn out a 90PS engine in a Punto and still only manage a 0-100 of 16.4 secs. The Polo with a 3 pot 75PS diesel motor manages a 0-100 of 14.4 (company claimed) secs. And I can assure you that the Polo handles as good if not better than the Punto. Its built as good if not better than the Punto. And lets cut the chase I am sure the Polo would be as good a car to drive in day to day driving as well. If Fiat says, they brought in the 90bhp avatar to please the enthusiasts, I am sure as hell they did a disappointing job at that.
