      Why SUV?

I'd like an SUV because they have space, you can bully back if you're provoked, and for the rough road capabilities.
There is also a feeling of safety when travelling on an unruly highway with your loved ones.

Right now, I'm wavering between getting a spacious sedan, or a butch SUV with 4WD.

      Why a sedan?
It's cheaper to buy and run, its easier to manage in congested areas, they are relatively more refined and trouble free than the offerings from the SUV manufacturers.
They are faster, more nimble, brake better and can be thrown around corners better.

      For me,
I have the Swift at my disposal, the Verna whenever I ask for it, I would love to have an SUV to travel on weekends with family.
The problem is, I dont have enough convincing options.

It has to be a 4X4- out go the innova/xylo/bolero storm
It has to be fast- Out goes the used Pajero
It has to be bulletproof reliable- scorpio and safari
It has to be Diesel- So Out goes the GV
It has to be comfortable- Used Endy eliminated.
I would love the Xenon, but the rear seat is upright and that really puts a spanner in the works.
The Safari GX 4x4 looks good, but, I'd rather have the impractical Xenon.
The Scorpio is a vehicle I love, but I cannot stand the mahindra sales team or their service network
Will I end up buying a sedan?
      I dont know yet.

This thread is probably going to last a few months, while I make up my mind.
But I'm pretty curious to know what I will finally end up with.

It might be a Logan Diesel for all I know with the rest of the money being saved for a rainy day. So its all up in the air at the moment. I thought, why suffer alone? Let the Gearheads add to my misery.

See a sedan ,the likes of cruze are as wide and long as the scorpio.

If you are looking for handling and braking ladder frame chassis suvs wont do the job ,forget scorpio, safari, even landcruiser wont do the job albeit the latest lexus which is a monocoque. The kind of corners now days sedans do at speeds of above 140 you will need atleast a 20lakh to compete.

Bolero is out of the competition,if it has to be then you have to get the sumo too in the race.

Best is to pick up a used crv or tuscon .

Xenon anyday. You can carry the cycle and the kayak on the bed

The front seats are as comfy as the Safari, I have driven the Xenon from close to Calcutta to Bangalore and I love the Xenon, its extremely comfortable. The engine is brilliant too. Remap it if you want more oomphhh.

The only downside to that vehicle is the rear bench seat. But then again, your kids are quite young. Its people like me with back aches who need to worry.

It is the perfect vehicle for you Doc. If you go camping, you can actually put a mattress in the bed and sleep peacefully. Or maybe you can get one those mobile camper thingy built? Something like this...

But most importantly it looks KILLER. I have no seen any other vehicle in that category turn as many heads as the Xenon does.

It is easy to justify the safari. But not so easy to justify the xenon. I'm not going to decide on this in a hurry.
Used tucson is on the radar. Will come relatively cheap, but reliability will be suspect because of the age of the vehicle.
CRV is ruled out because its petrol.
If only the pajero was faster
Anyone know how expensive or cheap the maintenance and parts are for a pajero? Its engine is comparatively low tech.
@avi- thats why i said, a "feeling" of safety.
Main thing is, truckers and buses will think twice before pulling out head on into the lane of a safari. They wouldnt blink before doing the same to a swift.
I think today's hatches and sedans are probably safer in crashes.
The other reason is, overtaking is easier when the ability to drop two wheels onto the highway shoulder is there.

kvk: the salesman said No, and you obeyed without asking why? :o

For my driving style, i'd probably be better off with and i20 or a remapped logan, but, ground clearance, 4WD are always welcome.
Anyone recommending a used SX4 with LPG? No 4WD, but i could save a bundle and get myself a proper offroader with the left over cash.
Goddy's experience with the safari booking is giving me the creeps.

Safari hmmmm truly is a safari ,great experience.

Most of the folks In bangy in their childhood would have visited bannaragetta national park, and taken the elephant ride there.

Thats the same feeling with the safari.

Its past its prime ,time for a replacement, its been more than 10years man.

Xenon looks good ,but if you arrive with your family ,you know how it wil look

How about a used captiva ?

Once I got a chance to TD both Scorpio VLX and Safari VX on the same road in Bangalore. I got amazed seeing the comfort of safari over the other. The price different was almost negligible.
