      like xander i would always like my expenses covered at the very least if i were to be the winner in class.

      That's highly improbable, unless you win Indian Open or some glamorous class like that. It's even worse in other disciplines like rallying, where you get a few thousands as prize money after having spent over a lakh preparing your car and running it.

      For a builder / tuner, however, these drag races are a very good platform to make people aware of your existence. Said builder / tuner can indirectly gain monetary benefit from the event by winning and building a network.

      For the rest, it is more about the opportunity to max out their cars on a properly cordoned off piece of road, and generally having a good time. Money is lowest on the list of priorities.

      Also, the organizers themselves shell out a lot of money to make the event happen, and entry fees and sponsorships cover only part of it. One needs to think about that aspect as well.
