      Lock, Stock and One Cracking Engine - Blackworks - The art of vtec

      As many of you know I have a 2003 OHC vtec (The Boat) - Relatively stock (
      Except for the

      -FFE,
      -Stock replacement clutch (Exceddy)
      -DBA rotors,
      -Hawk ceramic pads)


      Just as 1,00,000Kms were crossed did a compression test at Bay 6 and ( 180, 170, 171, 179 ) were the figures.

      and these are the figures from a friend's Baleno which has done around 85k Kms ( 160, 162, 170, 160 )

      Earlier this year was sitting around doing my stuff and vtec 'baba' aka Venkat called

      007 : Dude come over and drive this.
      Me : Drive what ? f*** !
      007 : Just get your lazy ass over here b****, trust me you would like this.

      Went there and a silver blue vtec.
      Interiors are 007 spec (read : dirty) car looks clean otherwise.

      Jumped in the car, started up instantly I notice the car sounds a tad different.
      A very 'healthy' sounding idle.

      007: Easy on the clutch and rev a lil more, it has a lightweight flywheel so you need to rev it a bit.

      Immediately I feel something that is not typical for an OHC vtec. Torque practically just off idle.
      Car feels a bit jumpy (KYB's yeah baby!) and the throttle is very very crisp.

      I short shift on 1, 2 , 3 the thing keeps pulling.
      I ease off to some 1500rpm in 3rd prod the throttle it instantly responds.
      Ease off again, floor it at the same rpm, no hesitation nothing the mad car just pulls off as if some turbo kicked in.

      Me : WTF have you done to this ?
      007: Turn left at the junction, you need to see it in higher revs.

      Empty road and I floor it, 1, 2 redline and the way it does is sublime no harshness (well Honda was never harsh).
      The vtec changeover is much more evident and after 5000rpm the rpm climbs so damn fast into 3,
      We hit a speedo indicated 120Km/Hr. To put things in perspective this is the same lenght of road where a Code 6 remapped Vento did ~115Km/Hr

      short shift 4 and then into 5th.

      Me: Dude this is freaking amazing man, what do you have under this a 2 stroke engine ?
      007 : Far from it man. This is very very close to stock.
      Me : Dude seriously.
      007: Yeah man I'm serious.
      Me: Ok, I need this on mine.
      007 : Wait a bit and let me see if I can replicate this same amount of 'violence' on my black vtec, If so you would be the first to get this. This car came with a busted engine.
      I was working on the block/head that was to go into my Black vtec. This car needed it more than mine.
      Me : Busted ?
      007 : Tooners dude, need to say more ?

      Few weeks later...

      007: F**** come over.
      Me : What's up ? Your car is done ?
      007 : Yup! Come drive it and see.
      Me : ok, I'll be there in 10 mins.

      Got into the matt black vtec starts it up.

      Me : This feels even more refined.
      007 : Yeah, you drive first.

      This car is fast and has almost the same amount of torque. But not as violent.
      This pulls right across the rev range and its butter smooth.

      Me : This feels nicer.
      007: I'm not too happy, needs more work. It pings a bit need to look into that.
      Me : ok. But now that you know this can be done when do we do mine.
      007 : We can, need some time. Let me mess around a bit.

      a few months later...

      August 17, 2014

      ~ 10AM vtec baba gives me a call.

      007 : Yo $#%^% get your car here.
      Me : So is the magic potion ready ?
      007 : Yes.
      Me : Cool, I'll be there in a while

      I drop it off around noon.
      ~ 3PM I get a call from a friend

      Friend : Did you see your car ?
      Me : No. What's up ? Its in the garage vtec baba is at it.
      Friend : He is at it ? LOL...!!!!
      Me : What ?
      Friend : Go see for yourself. LOL!

      I start to the garage, and this is what I see...

      The fist thing to say about 007 is that give him a box of tools and his default mode of operation is to take things apart.
      So in a matter of less than 4 hours from the car is droppen in, the engine looks like this

      Please tell us some background on this thread, what is being tried ? show some mercy on us, especially in the month of Xmas.

      For a Automobile challenged person like me i could only make out that 007 is loosing his hair trying to do something

      Nothing complicated. I rebuilt Riju's engine. Not that it *needed* a rebuild, but he still opted for one after driving another car whose engine I had fiddled with.

      Well... there ain't much background.
      I've always had the idea of getting an engine done up as close to factory spec.

      What was done here is just that + some minor tweaks.
      This will not be a "tooner" build.
      Info will be shared for folks to know.

      007 is the best person to explain what was done.
      My role is to share the experience and joy of getting one epic engine.

      So, the engine in pieces and we found something interesting.
      Unfortunately I can't seem to find the picture of it.

      The intake and exhaust springs were reversed.
      Not just one all of them. I know for a fact the engine was never touched.
      Seem this is the 3rd head with this 'funny' configuration.
      Looks like there was some joker in the assembly line

      The Clutch that was 'supposedly' Stage 1. Ignite the 'Garage' had done this.
      The Stage 1 for which I was billed turned out to be a stock replacement.

      The main reason for the Build was not because the engine needed it. That is evident from the compression test that was done.
      vtec has never been known for its low end torque or drivability.

      The car I drove (belonging to vtec_stage2) was far from it. It was fast, smoother, best of all drivable and a response like a 2 stroke.

      Goal / Expectation from the build.

      - Bring the engine as close to factory tolerance as possible.
      - Improved drivability.
      - Improved overall efficiency.
      - A bit faster than stock
      - Same or better reliability than stock.

      I was planning to keep the car and wanted it to be in the best possible shape.

      Venkat knows what he is talking about.
      He does it in his car first and then replicates it onto other cars.

      There is no 'magic' as such in what is being done.
      He is methodical (as in very very close to being OCD)
      He knows his stuff about Honda vtec's.

      This car will be a daily drive and will be worked upon going forward.
      The tweaks will follow one after the other.
