      A Laura Petrol and me

Had a great fascination for the old octavia vRs during its days. So much so that it was my hobby to go and test drive this mean machine every weekend and sometimes during office hours. I was in pune then and the NH4 from Sadanand hotel to the expressway turn off was used for all kinds of fun with the car. I was so smitten by the car that I just could not resist driving it every now and then under the pretext of a test drive. Still remember the old yellow vRS that we took one afternoon for a test drive and my friend pulling the handbrake on NH4 and making the lady who accompanied us with the brochure from the dealership puke. The vRS was way out of budget and I sulked and tried a lot of nakhras at home but people were not relenting to go all out and make a purchase.

Fast forward to 2011 and I am mad with jealousy at TSI owners. I convinced myself that this was the thing I wanted. It had stratified direct injection and a few hp more and was more capable than its predecessor. My test drive saga started all over again. The only difference being that this one was enacted in Bangalore. I used to visit Tafe , hosur road every other weekend and pay the toll and take the NICE road. Made good friends with James, the sales guy there and he would come with me for all the test drives. Since I had driven the old octy vRS and this newer TSI, the differences were immediately apparent. The younger sibling was a lot more pliant and lacked savagery. The engine though looked profoundly new age. I deliberated, kicked up dinner table discussions about a purchase and people all around me doubted my sanity for a variety of reasons. I had already picked up a used Ford Mondeo by then, the biggest white elephant man could find. Was spending most of my waking hours in Hessergatta Ford and NICE road test driving the Mondy to check for various niggles that would crop up from time to time.

There was this nice drive from home to Kanva reservoir one afternoon in the Mondy when the beast decides to give up on me on NICE road. Reason was a fuel pump failure. In the midst of a these confidence denting issues I was going after a Laura Petrol with Skoda's dubious after sales reputation and at a time when all Indians were moving to diesels. I paid an advance and booked a black TSI in Dec 2011. I saw the car in flesh at the yard, ran circles around it, checked everything I could and looked at anyone nearing the car with suspicion. It was after all a skoda. Due to certain really absurd reasons, I cancelled the booking and bought a used skoda diesel. Am not sure what I was thinking then.

The petrol had again slipped out of my hands. Fast forward again to 2015 and I see this ad on TBHP showing a very low mileage Laura TSI. Next day I bought it. Not that I had a lot of money lying around or that I needed a car badly. Simply because I was sure that such an engine will never be offered at a price point that I can afford in the future. I simply wanted the engine and call it mine. That is the story of my TSI.

There were infinite instances when drooling was the only option. On a drive to Gopalaswamy betta in the diesel laura, I bottomed out multiple times due to an extremely soft suspension on very bad roads. After a frustrating descent, got to the Gundulpet coffee day and what do I see. A beautiful looking black laura diesel on bilsteins drives into the parking and a family gets out. Turns out that car was remapped and I spoke to the family at length about remaps, handling, ground clearance and what not.

Another early morning drive from Wayand in the polo, I was brutally overtaken by a sexy white Laura vRS on bilsteins driven by capable hands. I tried to keep pace but could not even see the car anywhere close. The Laura legend grew stronger in the mind.

This is essential part of owning such fast cars. it is just like dating a super model, if one is okay with the occasional tantrums.

So a swell garage now, Thar, Polo and Laura

Why do people post I want the best for my car... When there isn't anything that is the best on the car to begin with.

I actually feel terribly guilty many a time thinking about these purchases. Just hope that these indulgences don't look mean. No more. Have made a quiet promise to myself.

Congratulations! Looking at your history, I do not have to tell you that you have done a very sensible thing buying the Laura TSI! What I can tell you though, is that it is one engine that has no limits for modding! A good remap and simple stuff like a good exhaust will take you to the 200+ BHP mark easily. If you want to push it further, there are bolt on kits available from many brands. The possibilities are really quiet a lot.

Just remember to check on the usual issues for this car and stay away from Skoda ASS as much as possible! Since you are in Bangalore, Bay6 is your best bet

Always carry a litre of Engine oil as this engine needs regular top-ups!

Congrats Hari, I know how much you've been looking forward to owning this beauty

In fact Hari and me went and looked at a couple of TSIs around 6 months ago, but none of them were in good shape.

Yours reminded me of an eight year old, who keeps promising that this is his last toy.

Do not feel guilty about it. It it is important to fulfill one's own wishes, helps to remain optimistic and ahead in the life curve.
