in2dlife, you may want to change the title of this thread to something more specific and add your requirements/priorities.

The classic Class AB vs Class D comparison

To be honest new age Class D ampa are comparable to Class AB. Some would still say Class AB is all SQ and blah blah blah.. To be honest newer age class D amps are right up league of best of class AB amps. Bring into picture high efficiency of class D amps, I still believe class D amps are the way forward.

Is RF R600-D a good product for 13k. Of course yes. But if you can stretch your budget a bit check out RF T400-4 or T600-4.. Those are awesome amps as well.

Its a decent product, should do what you are looking for, my take is i find the old Class D's to be a little Harsh on the highs but the newer Gen is right up there with Class A/B. You will have to listen and then decide and if that is not a possibility then buy the amp and then decide, else you can always sell at a profit as compared to Indian Prices.

I am one of those people who firmly believe that the current Class D amps aren't anywhere as good as the Class AB amps when it comes to out and out SQ. Anyone who tells you otherwise either haven't done enough A to B comparisons. Or are selling a lot of Class D amps and can't tell you they are inferior.

Obviously there are exceptions. Like the JL Audio HD amps being Class D are brilliant and can be comparable to most good Class AB amps. But such amps are few and far in between.

We sell a few Class D amps as well. But we tell the client up front about the pros and cons and then let them take the decision after auditioning to both classes of amps.

Class D amps are efficient no doubt. They do boast of great specs. They are very handy when you don't have enough boot space and need space saving amps due to their small form factor.

If you look at majority of the high end installs around the globe you'll see most of them using Class AB amps even now.

But if you aren't looking at high end install, you are probably not going to see much of a difference unless you have very good ears. So I guess it's fine in that regard if you pick up a Class D.

Personally I'd prefer Class D amps on subs. Small form factor with pretty high powered specs will help you drive a sub with the required power without having to pay an arm and leg.

I am not an ICE expert, nor having some listening ears.

There couple of specs that are missing in the list viz. THD+N at peak power and at listening power, dynamic range or peak to average ratio that is can be handled by the amp unit, without clipping, EMI and PSRR specs which are important. Apart from electrical specs, how good is the output audio for listening (to the buyer's ears) is another important factor.

This thread by OP is not about Class AB Vs Class D shoot out. Let us not convert it into one. Class D's have improved a lot since last decade and half. They are at par with Class AB at low and mid wattage amplifiers. Only areas they lack are..

      (A) in the area of co-existence with radio,
      (B) EMI due to switching compared to zero emi in AB, and
      (C) THD+N at peak power which becomes significant at higher wattages, class AB/ Class G can easily offer 0.1% where as class D is still around 1%.

Class D is infact better suited for battery operated systems, active speaker systems (speaker with built in amp where space is a constraint), portable or miniature systems. The next Generation of amp classes that have been invented already, but yet to be commercialised will combine best of class AB and Class D

I will not get too much into the classification of amplifiers. It is a highly debatable topic.
Rockford Fosgate amps come in multiple flavours, Power > Punch > Prime.

I will not get into comparison on superiority as there are too many between the three series.
Target Power series for high end equipment down the chain (means a more expensive ICE), punch is a good average of both worlds and worth investing in.

The only thing I will however mention is that Prime series amps are constant power amplifiers and circuit is designed in a way that the power does not swing with the input impedance. This is critical for high fidelity and a need for extremely highly fidelity setup.

Do check the price of the punch series (P600X-4) and if the differential is within your budget then get it.

I have personally used all 3 Amp categories under RF stable - Prime, Punch and Power. Needless to say Power Series are very good, powerful Amplifiers. I'd suggest you to go with Punch if you have the budget. Alternatively you could look for some other brands too. For the price, you are saying, Prime doesn't justify its value !

      Hey mate,

You have anyway decided to buy from US. Why not make the best use of this opportunity?

Get the T400-4.. Excellent amp. Can drive almost all speakers with this amplifier.

Rockford Fosgate T400-4 Power Series Compact 4-Channel Amplifier

Check out the reviews mate.. All positive

And if you want to use this opportunity to max then T600-4 is the one you should go for. 150w x 4 amplifier

Rockford Fosgate T600-4 Power Series 600W 4-Channel Amplifier

PS:- These above two amplifiers sell for more than two times this price in India
