Humidity is the culprit, dont under estimate its power.
As he was not having problem in another apartment in the same city.. It has got something to do with this particular apartment.

The symptom arunj has cited is one most of us go thru frequently. I used to get this after EVERY car wash and almost day during rainy season in India. I get this here in Dubai in the summer months when humidity is high.

My car runs in wet conditions about 6 months a year in the winter. The car is always parked outside. The symptoms arunj has wont come by parking for a few hours in humid conditions. I would like to think the sliders in his calipers are not moving freely but then his car is a 2014 model....

You could be right. I usually got this after an overnight stop. The sliders could be a culprit too... a check for dragging brakes can rule that out? Better to get the cable checked too.

If it is humidity, then won't it affect the brakes if the car is out in the rain for a couple of hours? I do not see this problem when it rains while I am work- the handbrake releases the wheels and there is no sound when the car moves.

Can you explain what you mean by caliper sliders not moving freely and the car being a 2014 model?

Today I noticed that I was being absent-minded again, and drove the car for a few metres before realising that the handbrake was set at the first click. The car was beeping, and that was what made me check. Otherwise I would have driven a little longer and wondered what happened to the pickup.

You have floating calipers and there is only a piston on one side so they are mounted so that they slide on 2 pins to get even pressure on both sides of the brake disc.
This drawing shows you how. You can see that the piston is on one side only. The slider pins are B. You should not worry about these pins in a 1 year old car if they did grease at assembly. I have seen a Lada where 1 caliper was not greased at all.
