New camera purchase - Suggestions thread

I have a budget of Rs.15k. Need inputs for buying a VFM camera. One of my friend suggested for Panasonic - FX-35. I do not have any idea on photography other than pointing the object and clicking it down. Need to go through the other threads here & understand more on this subject. I can make arrangements to get this purchased either from US or Dubai or from any other places where it will work out cheaply

      Suggestions welcome.

I find the Canon image quality the best. Also, many models use penlight cells - so get good rechargeables, and say good bye to 'sir the battery is now obsolete'. With Eneloop batteries they hold the charge for ages, so no problem of dead batteries when you need them. Also, pack a few alkalines in your bag. The only negative a bit linger to charge / recycle.

Go for Canon PowerShot SX20IS. It has 12.1MP, 20x zoom, 2.5-inch articulating LCD, etc. The pic quality is better in Canon's compared to any other point-and-shoot cameras. It sells for about $350 in amazon. Also get an 8GB SDHC card, battery charger and a set of rechargeable batteries.

Panasonic FZ35 (FZ38) and Canon SX20 IS were declared joint winners.

Just keep in mind that the ones that use regular AA Cells will be slightly more bulky than the ones using custom batteries.
@sgiitk when you say Eneloop you mean Sanyo Eneloop right. Is this available in India yet? Or are there any good batteries available locally which hold the charge for long? The chamelions that I have die in a couple of weeks if left unused.

I am running with FZ28 and its a good value for that money we spent. But if you are looking for some DSLR kinda stuff, then need a lot of analysis. Nikon p100, Panasonic FZ35 are above 15k it seems. But are good cams.

jaguar: I bought my Eneloop along with the camera and charger from JJ Mehta. (www.jjmehta.com) I have a SX20IS as has also been suggested. IXUS range does not use penlights.

NAGA: Since you love your car and love to travel a lot I would suggest you pick up a good P&S at one go even if it means overshooting your budget by a bit.

I prefer the FZ38 over the SX20. The FZ18 though quite old now was another brilliant camera.

      Agreed. I use one.

FZ38/35 will be slightly costlier than the SX20; but if you r getting it from US, it should fit your budget.
