Can the bumble bee fly? - Pulsar RS200 ownership report

The "bumblebee argument", in pseudoscience, states that the laws of aerodynamics prove that the bumblebee can't fly, as it does not have the required capacity (in terms of wing area or flapping speed). Consequently, therefore, science can be shown to be in error, providing a loophole for pseudoscientific "explanations". Arguments like these are occasionally used by creationists to claim that it's impossible for bees to be a product of evolution, though they're quite common in more general anti-science circles that like to cry "look at science, it knows nothing!"

A simpler definition put by Mike Huckabee

"It's scientifically impossible for the bumblebee to fly; but the bumblebee, being unaware of these scientific facts, flies anyway."

I decided to find out for real by getting a bumblebee and putting it to test.

      The Decision:

I have always been a fan of full faired sports bikes right from childhood days. I used to drool at all the R1s and Ninjas in the automobile magazines. But even when I grew older and was legal age to ride, my parents never approved me to get one. I used to ride friends’ motorcycles now and then in college and somehow the passion slowly died and I became more of a car guy.

But, not for long. After moving to Bangalore last year, I bought a Yamaha RayZ scooter, primarily for moving around in peace without trouble from RTO. That is when I started riding again and began loving it. After using it for 10 months, the itch started in me to get something bigger, a proper motorcycle rather than the twist and go scoot.

So when I decided to finally get one whatsoever, I knew it had to be a sporty full faired one. But I had a limited budget of Rs 1 – 1.10 lakh and these are the one’s I considered:

Yamaha R15 V2.0 – This is undoubtedly the sportiest motorcycle in the 150 cc segment and is quite a looker still even though it is a bit old now. But after taking a test ride, I was in a dilemma. The riding stance is too aggressive. But I did not have a problem with that. I like to lean forward while riding. But what put me off was that Yamaha offered me the test drive of around 1 km in bumper to bumper traffic with a 100kg sales guy sitting pillion. I found my wrists paining in no time and put my decision on hold.

Suzuki Gixxer SF – I was impressed with the baby busa looks of the SF and took a test drive. This was my best showroom experience. They gave me the keys to the test ride bike and said “Enjoy!”. No pillion sales guy, no distance limit. May be because I had left my Honda city at the showroom, they trusted me ☺ . Anyways I liked the bike instantly. Riding position was sporty but more upright than the R15. It handled quite nimbly and I also read expert reviews praising the handling. The only thing that I felt could be better was the power.

Pulsar AS200 – I went to test ride one, but when I saw the RS200 standing beside that, I immediately felt a change of heart. It looked much better in flesh than I saw in pics. Ended up test riding the RS, was impressed, raised my budget by 40K and paid booking amount then itself.

Why I got it. – It had all the qualities I saw in the Gixxer SF like good handling, full faired look and a non tiring riding position suited for touring. But it offered even some more.

The RS had a bigger bike feel.
200CC fuel injected engine churning out 24.5 bhp. A good 10 bhp more which really comes in handy on the highways.
ABS which is a boon for inexperienced riders like me.

It has a few negatives too which I found our later, but I will come to that part.

      The Booking and Delivery:

I did the booking on 20th sep at Amba Bajaj, Bomanahalli. The showroom had 8 bikes of the ABS variant in stock. But being a Sunday the warehouse was not open. I went to the warehouse the next day, did PDI and selected a bike, and gave rest of the payment. It was registered and delivered to me on 24th, the auspicious day of Bakrid. Being a holiday, I had lot of free time after delivery. So first I went to the nearest shell outlet and tanked up. After that I took it on a 50 km ride to shoolagiri. The new bike excitement was there, but in retrospect I have to say it was indeed one boring experience to ride this motorcycle by varying the RPM between 3000 – 5000 which translates to a speed of no more than 60 km/h. This is a machine designed to do 100 km/h all day.
