Ford Figo 1.4 TDCI ZXI - silver

Nothing was legally in my name per say. Not even a bicycle. I just had a Hero Honda splendor passed down from my father.(that too, after I finished my college and got a decent job) .How I longed to own a vehicle in my name with my own money. See, the theory of owning a vehicle is that you can do whatever the hell you want to do with it. It’s yours for god’s sake. Period.

Finally, after years of waiting and dreaming about my own car, the D-day finally arrived.
I could not contain the joy in my heart. After all , I had spent months and months together “researching” for a car that suits my need and mainly my “budget”.
Still with a degree of skepticism, finally I arrived at the decision of going for Ford Figo.
Had heard a lot of positive and quite a few negative reviews about Figo.
But for me somehow, the positive points overweighed the negative.
Besides, the budget looked tailor made for me.

On May 19th, 2010, I finally got the much awaited call from the SP “saaaaar your car is here in the showroom”. I rushed to the showroom as fast as humanly I could.
There it was. My shining silver ride standing quietly. Did all the financial formalities, gave a small gift to the SP, did a thorough PDI (took almost an hour) and finally the keys.
      Big chunky key it was.

My very own Silver Ford Figo 1.4 TDCI ZXI.
Total cost: 6, 00,000 OTR Bangalore
Freebies: 3rd year extended warranty. Part of corporate discount.
2+2 floor mats , 4 mud flaps, box of tissue papers + chocolate box.
Boot mat was out of stock.

It’s been almost 3 months now. I just had the first service done.
Here’s some “review” from my point-of-view.
Please don’t blame me if you find it similar to others review J
And oh, please forgive me if the review is not “technical” to your liking.

      Advantages:
      ========

      Looks
      – Yes, I agree most people find the figo design dull and uninspiring.I am into subtle looks and figo has it. It has that “muscle” factor. Even though the car is comparatively small it does not have that cheap puny looks of other cars in its segment.

      Value for money
      – Now, Here’s where Ford is sending shivers down the likes of Maruti.I mean, come-on ,for 6 lakhs I’m not expecting impractical things likes of leather seats, cruise control and what not.

      Handling
      – Oh what a joy to ride. I had heard of the famous Ford driving dynamics, but I got experience first hand in my figo. 10 on 10 for the handling.
You literally know where exactly your tires are. At higher speeds it’s like butter.
I can go on and on about it.

      Power
      – I’m no expert in automobiles. But from what I can say, with 4 full adults, the car chugged on steep inclines without even so a slight whimper. All I know is that my car responds happily whenever I floor the pedal. One thing I’d like to mention here is that it’s an absolute joy to ride it in Bangalore’s notorious traffic rarely need to go to first gear !!

      Mileage
      – I’m ok with my mileage. It’s some where around 15 to 16 in city with 80% AC. (I did not get a chance to go on highways yet). I took the claimed mileage with a pinch of salt. I always knew at the back of my mind that the mileage would be less, but then again I’m hoping that the mileage improves as days pass on.

      Disadvantages:
      ===========

      Ride height/Ground clearance
      – Where did Ford road test figo. Surely not on Indian roads I presume. You are bound to scrape the bottom if there are more than 2 average weight people. It’s absolutely impractical ride height. Is there anything that can be done?

      Width –
Is it me or the figo is much wider than other small cars? I scraped the left side front and rear already.

      Seat height adjustment –
This is a cheap trick played by ford on unassuming customers. For a short guy like me (5’4), seat height adjustment is the most critical thing. I hate the sunk-in feeling when I sit in the car. I need to see at least 3/4th of the bonnet to have a confident drive. Bottom of the seat merely tilts down and up by few degrees. That’s it.

      Mirrors –
Again, what was ford thinking? Mirrors don’t fold fully. Imagine, the first time I was trying to fold the mirrors; I nearly broke them trying to fold fully. It’s really a nuisance in Bangalore’s bumper-to-bumper traffic when BMTC busses keep only hairline distance from you ( they think they are riding a bicycle)

      Gears -
I was used to driving my Dad’s Alto. Gears are smooth as butter. Some how I find the gears in ford too hard for my liking. And then there’s the dreaded reverse gear. Most of the time I keep yanking the gear lever down to get to reverse.

      Sorry for the long post.

Still to come 1.Showroom experience 2.First service experience

      till then…that’s all folks !!

Very nice review and beautiful car. Congrats, Nimbleguru!

I agree with your view on the looks of the car. I have seen few figos with fat tyres and they totally change the look of the car. Makes it look more beautiful. You may want to consider tyre upsize and alloy wheels in the future. Keep updating the thread.

The enthusiasm and excitement shows in your write up. And IMHO you couldn't have picked a better car.

I have to agree with Aditya, I have seen a lot of Figos with upgraded alloys and tyres and it does change the way the car looks.

Is there anything that can be done?
Unfortunately, that is something you will have to live with. Try taking the speed brakers at an angle if possible. Will reduce the scraping a bit. Anything you do to increase the GC will mess up the handling dynamics of the car.

Is it me or the figo is much wider than other small cars? I scraped the left side front and rear already.
Not sure about other small cars, but it surely is less wider than the Punto, Swift, Vista & the Polo. No car can be as badly designed from the visibility POV as the Swift in that segment.

Awaiting for the rest of the review. And ya last but not the least, congratulations and I hope this bonding with the car will last for a very long time.

PS: We are meeting up for dinner on the 25th evening at Koramangala. Do drop by if you are free.

Thank God, I see like minded people who agree with the looks !!
( all these days i thought i was the only one )

Aditya : Thank you.I have every intent on tyre/alloy upgrades. But as of now there's a teeny-tiny problem (no money.haha)
Beside's i'm quite afraid of voiding the warrenty if I upsize now.I wanted to enjoy the stock for a year and start expeimenting later on.I intend to keep the car for atleast 5-6 years with me

mclaren1885 : Thanks again.I'll try to write more on weekends. Weekdays i'm stuck in the cubical.
"We are meeting up for dinner on the 25th evening at Koramangala" - oh, how i would have loved to come. Unfortunately, i have to toil in office on 25th. But thanks for the invite.I'll sure make it up next time.Really sorry about that.
Besides I stay at the other end of b,lore ( Read : Hebbal)

Blaford : Thanks. As you said i'm enjoying every moment. I did not ever felt that it was a waste of my money.BTW : do you have your figo snaps ? Looks like it's the same color as mine !

KRRaj: Thank you. I'm no writer.I do what i can
As people said the low GC might be because of the long base of Figo. It's really one of the biggest -ve points of Figo.I'm afraid in couple of years there will be a big hole at the bottom

I live in RT Nagar, which is not too far off from your place. Infact, a lot of members around our area. And yes like KRRaj already mentioned the meet will be around 8pm. Unless you have a night shift. If not, we can always meet up in RT Nagar itself for coffee or something whenever you are free.
