Any diesel from a good pump will do the job. Adulteration can and does happen. Its pretty much hit and miss. Select a pump with a good reputation. Over time you will know which ones to frequent. Some swear by Shell (I don't) .

This topic has been extensively covered in multiple threads... including lists of good pumps in some cities. Please use the search feature.

I don't swear by Shell either at least with Diesel and find them on par with good HP bunks. If I am not wrong both source from the Mangalore refinery at least in the south. Having tried diesel from the supposedly best bunks in Chennai of multiple oil companies, I have settled with Reliance as first choice, followed by BP, then IOC, Shell, HP at the same level. For the 1.3 DDiS, BP is smoother below 2K RPM (less idle clatter) while IOC/HPCL/Shell are smoother >2K RPM but have more clatter at lower rpm.

Reliance is smoother at least for me across the range. Mileage is more or less the same every where if the bunk has good reputation. Had very similar experience on 1.3 MJD with VGT on my Manza as well.

From what I understand, BP in Chennai comes from Cochin Refinery, IOC from CPCL in Manali-Chennai, HP and Shell from Mangalore refinery. A decade or so earlier MRL (as CPCL was called earlier) used to supply for whole of Chennai.

Reliance Petro used to supply to IOC, BPCL and HP as well.

As mentioned by fellow members, make sure that you are getting fuel from pumps where chances of adulteration is less. I've tried almost all brands, and the observation is as above.

I drive a 1.6, and I use just standard fuel. I'd suggest sticking with standard fuel at a good, reputed pump.

At least in the past people had smoke problems with Premium diesel. I think Shell nationwide source their fuels from IOC (or some other PSU). In most places RIL sells its own. What matters is the quality (ie adulteration) and quantity of fuel. It is widely believed that between 60 and 90% of the FPS kerosene ends up in Diesel.

Chandigarh has become the first Kerosene free City in India. So I am at-least assured that when I buy Diesel from Chandigarh there would not be any Kerosene adulterated in it.
