      Volkswagen Vento 1.6 TDi

This is a quick review. I had only 10 mins with the car on an arrow straight road since I had not scheduled a TD.
They let me jump the TD queue purely because the sales people know me from a long time back

I will put up a more detailed review after thrashing it properly.

The Car I TDed was a highline version.
Looks elegant in Black and White. The Red looks garish on the understated bodylines of the car.
The chrome highlights on the grille and around the fog lamps looked unnecessary to me.
The lower half of the grille looks too bland. They could have done better there.
Cost cutting and giving us indians the plain jane lights doesnt help on the looks front either.
Profile, front three quarters, rear three quarters and rear all look great.
I just wish Volkswagen were a bit more bolder with the design up front.
Not Hyundai Verna transform bold(that's disgusting) but cruze bold.

      Interiors
      Nice feel. Great ergonomics.
Switchgear felt very nice to handle. Indicator stalk is on the "wrong" side

      Engine.
Noisy with the bonnet up. Typical Diesel
Shut the bonnet, and its pretty silent. Clatter is still obvious outside the car.
Inside the car, the engine is inaudible upto 3-3.5k. I must admit, that when the noise of the engine revving over 3.5k comes in, it feels nice. Feels refined even while screaming.

      Very rev happy. Hyundai like
Performance- I was disappointed. Maybe, the hype from GTO's review on tbhp carried me away too much.
On paper, the engine is supposed to make more torque from lower down in the rev range than the Hyundai Verna, which i'm used to.
It didnt feel that quick. it felt only as fast as the stock swift that i'm used to.
maybe, it's because its a heavier car, maybe because the NVH is better controlled. maybe, because the power delivery is more linear than the swift and the verna that I drive normally.

Dont get me wrong, the engine pulls well, but not as well as the Verna.

Turbo lag is never an issue for me. I just downshift and stay above 2k on all cars I drive. People who crib about turbo lag should continue to fool them selves and stay with petrols that have lag throughout the rev range.

So, if you ask me about lag, I'll say I dont know, because throught out the TD, I never had the chance to drop the revs below 2k, except in 1st gear, where turbo lag doesnt exist. in any car.

      Gear box
Nice ratios. Smooth feel. Very precise gates. But not notchy, which is what I usually expect when the gates are precise. I could use adjectives for the gearbox feel that wouldnt be out of place in an erotica website.

Clutch is long travel, but light enough. I'm a diesel boy, so the petrol boys should try the clutch out for themselves
Lets say, its heavier than the Swift, but lighter than the Verna.

There seemed to be something wrong with the clutch engagement though.
it seemed to engage only a fraction of a second after my foot went completely off the pedal.
which made for very jerky upshifts.
I'll have to re test that on another car.

      Pedal position is decent.
While stationary,I initially thought the accelerator and brake are too far apart for any enthusiastic heel and toeing, but while downshifting on the move, I found myself unconsciously getting the foot action right. So, no complaints there.

      Steering.
Feels great till you start moving.
      Feels a little over assisted.
The car feels disconnected from the tarmac. So, the confidence to push it is lacking. Maybe driving it on a regular basis will help.
Turning radius seems okay for a european car of that size.
The car goes where you point it, and it changes direction eagerly and predictably, but not knowing what the tires are upto kills the fun.
Are the OE supplied JK vectras to blame?

      Brakes
Brilliant. Extremely good at stopping. Even without the ABS being called into action.
Pedal can be modulated very well. Spongy for some. But to me, thats how brakes should be, progressive. I like.

      Driving position.
Seats were nice. Forward and side visibilty were good , even for a short person like me.
Rear visibilty sucks. Maybe all the car manufacturers have gotten into an arms race to see who can make the car with the least rear visibilty.

      Overall
I'm not sure its VFM. I'm going to give it another chance, just because the sales staff are so nice, and I had such high hopes for the car.
I hope the next TD will be a lot more detailed. I cant believe that I feel so let down. I'm inclined to blame myself for it, because the test drive was so short and hurried.
at 10.5 lacs on road, it doesnt have the performance of the cheaper verna.
The trendline costs 9.5, but the equipment level in it is shockingly spartan.

This is bad, I hate it.

Just curious, how do you manage in slow/very slow moving traffic.
Say 10 - 30 km/Hr keep it in second ? (in the lag zone)
Or keep it in first ?

IIRC there is no way to escape the "lag zone" especially inside the city (at least for the Swift).

      Did 120kmph.

Ride couldnt be tested. Roads were too smooth. Not pitchy and wallowy during braking or lane changing. Very unlike the verna on that front.

Depends on how much torque is needed. In bumper to bumper traffic, if there are no gaps to exploit, i'll leave it lag. There is enough torque below 2k in most diesels to keep up and even overtake slow moving traffic. There is more torque below 2k in a turbo diesel than there is at 2k in a regular NA petrol sedan or hatch
If there is a necessity, i downshift.
If you feel lag, you're in the wrong gear or in the wrong mood for that kind of traffic.

      That sounds good.

Yeah this is exactly what irritates me. The car just want to GO...!
So its a mixture of slipping in into Neutral or burning the clutch.

Anyone saw the Times of India ad today? Vento ad in the last full page came with a electronic device which keeps talking Vento and German engineering. Brilliant advertising!

Oh. The Hindu always gives more importance to the Chennai Edition But the Ad was funny with that engineer crying. Lets hope VW do a good job here unlike Skoda.
