      My 3rd Fiat and its a T-JET

Story of how the T-Jet found me!

I'm a proud owner of 2012 Fiat Punto MJD 75hp. Have completed 89,000 kms happily. Car is as good as it was in 2012.
From 2016 my usage and requirements have changed. City drives have come down and it was only highways. With tall people in the family there was always an issue when some one had to sit behind me on driver seat. Also we were carrying lot of luggage on our trips and Punto couldn't manage it. We were stuffing bags inside the cabin on almost all of our trips. So family was in need of a bigger car and I was in need of more power. This is how the thought of upgrading car started.

But I couldn't let go of Punto just like that. Its one in the family. So initially I was planning to get a used car in that case I get to keep the Punto as well. Then there was parking issues and also my usage, I started using two wheeler to office so having 2 cars in parking lot for only weekend usage and highways on average once a month doesn't make any sense. In the meantime checked out couple of used Linea Tjets and decided that I'm never going be satisfied with an used car. While all this thought process was going on cars started becoming more and more expensive!

      Hunt for the car
Moving away from a Fiat is very difficult once you are used to it. Its an emotional attachment difficult to overcome
One thing for sure was that I wanted a bigger car with more space and more power. I was ready to stretch my budget up to 15L at max.
I'm a guy who doesn't TD cars just for the sake of it. I know what I need after driving Punto for 5 years. My mind had just 3 cars to ponder about.
Fiat was a natural choice along with another strange car or rather truck.

      1) Isuzu Vcross
      2) Abarth Punto
      3) Linea Tjet

At back of my mind passive thinking
Safari Storme, XUV 500 W6 and Cruze
All rejected due to pricing. I wasn't very interested in XUV anyways. It might have been between Cruze and Storme if at all I was ready to extend my budget to 17L.

      Isuzu Vcross
I fell in love with this truck the time it was launched at an amazing price of 12.4L Ex-Showroom. It had all that I wanted. Looks, space, reliable engine and I was sure it could be a life time companion. Test drove Vcross from KUN Isuzu Coimbatore mid of 2016. Staff were friendly and brought the car home. Test drove it on NH and the truck can seriously mask speeds. It was a nice torque monster with linear power delivery. Just slot it on top gear and will happily chug along all day. With 4x4 this is all I could want at that price. I started following VCross Facebook groups religiously. Read each and every ownership experience.

      Issues with Vcross
LENGTH! It's too lengthy. Might be an issue for the rare city drives but I tried to make up my mind that I will get used to it. It never felt any different from driving any other SUV.
The rear suspension which is leaf spring. Though I couldn't make out anything from the short test drive, I didn't want family to suffer at the back seat due to bumpy ride. Also the back seat is too upright for long journeys.
Engine was not fun to drive. No mad rush. It just does the work in sane manner.

I could have let go all the above negatives but now comes the price. The time I checked it they were quoting around 15.5L for the bare body car. Prices have already increased from the introductory launch price. I would have to get audio system and bed cover installed for extra money which I thought I can get it done later. I can even move my Rockford Fosgate setup from Punto to Vcross. Days went by me reading ownership reviews and dreaming about driving this truck. Sadly it was too late. That was when Isuzu started increasing price like crazy. By Jan 2017 price OTR has been increased by almost 1 Lakh! Thats too much. Now it retails for around 16.5L . Also family wasn't happy with me buying a pickup truck but they were fine with whatever keeps me happy. So that's the end of road for Vcross. I can't spend so much on a car.
Way beyond budget and mind was clear that this option is out. Thanks to isuzu for increasing the price.

Now we have only 2 options left.

      Abarth Punto vs Linea Tjet
Abarth Punto had the power I wanted but same cabin space as Punto. Our primary requirement was lack of space so Abarth Punto went out of the list. Now we have only Linea TJET. At this point I was worried about Petrol price. I would have to be prepared for single digit mileage in city and a decent mileage on highways. I was thinking about it for weeks. My usage has been around 15,000 kms per year on average. Also was wondering if I should just continue with my Punto and see if I will be able to manage just like I did all these days, but cars were becoming so expensive and if at all I should get a new car it should be as soon as possible. Not sure what surprise GST and budget will have for us. Don't know on what basis they will classify a car as luxury. Sadly we are in a country which is not very automobile friendly.

Fiat had cut the price in January making the ex-showroom price below 10L so that we can save some money on road tax. Oh wait! They aren't offering the 60K discount now. Effectively it's the same price of 11.5L approx on road for Linea Tjet. Linea Tjet was selling for around 10.5L on road in the year 2014 when it was launched. This is how car prices were increasing and can't blame manufacturers but it's the government making changes to excise duty etc. Adding more confusion was that Linea Diesel and Linea Tjet cost about the same OTR. Should I just get Linea MJD or take the plunge and get the T-Jet? So much of confusions on head. If I pick MJD it would be like driving the same car so I wasn't very keen on it.

In the mean time I was at Marvel Fiat for fixing some minor issues in Punto. I was chatting with a known sales person there about how I want to buy a Tjet but prices are so high. I wanted them to check the inventory to see if there is any pre power up Linea Tjet which I could get for a good price. They were negative initially but I asked them to double check with higher ups. They checked and luckily there was only one Linea Tjet 114PS of 2016 make in magnesio grey color. I asked them to send me the best price and left home. They weren't able to get me the VIN but I was ok with it. They showed me the stock list where it was mentioned it's a 2016 make. That was enough for me. Then next day negotiated with the sales guy from Marvel and fixed the price at 10L On Road. Now without giving any time for my head to think, transferred 25k to the dealer and booked the Tjet.
This I suppose is the last pre power up Linea Tjet to leave the factory unless they have some hidden inventory elsewhere
Now with the extra discount I got I can make up for the petrol - diesel price difference. Also was ok to let go of touch screen and extra 10PS of power of the 125S version. I don't think there will be much of difference in real world driving condition. Afterall I can remap after some years if at all necessary. No tensions about choosing color either as there was no option. Only Magnesio. Though I would have preferred white or black as only these colors go well with subtle mods.

Within a week car landed at the Showroom. As soon as I came to know it I rushed to see her and there she was awaiting me.

This is how we met for the first time

First thing I checked was the odo. Just 25 kms on it with H. Second thing the VIN. It ends with AGZ. So it's a January make car. I was expecting a April - May manufactured car but it was January. I was fine with it as two months is not going to do any harm. Checked bodylines, electricals etc and were good as new. No signs of being in the yard for a year. Only the driver seat and sun glass holder was slightly dirty. It went away with some wipe using a wet cloth. So all good! Asked the showroom guys to proceed with loan. Loan formalities were complete in a week's time and car was delivered home on an auspicious day of full moon.

Sales experience was Ok. There were some issues in registering the car and had to wait for 2 weeks for it. I was fine with the wait but if that was communicated to me before hand I would have planned accordingly. Now that car is with me all minor sales niggles vanished
Once the car was registered and I got the reg number I drove the car to 3M Car Care Coimbatore RS Puram for a wash and wax. Didn't want to do any detailing now. I asked them to remove all the polythene covers from seats. Also carried Kagu 3D mats along and asked them to install it. Now there she is all clean and shiny to spend happy times with me.

      Initial impressions
Space. I was worried if Linea would have same cabin space as Punto. I wasn't able to make up my mind even after checking my friend's Linea.
But now I can double confirm that Linea has more space at the rear. Rear legroom is much more than Punto. It can accommodate two 6 footers back to back. Though not as spacious as Jap/Korean counterparts with thin seats and slim panels. Space provided is more than enough.
There is a space to accommodate one full water bottle above the rear AC vent. Thats enough for me. I'm not sure who wants to carry water bottles on all four doors. In that case 500ml bottles will fit all door pockets.Boot space, humongous and can't ask for more.

Loads of power on tap. No worries about slow moving trucks on steep inclines, just slight dab on the accelerator and zoom past them. Lots of difference compared to my Punto MJD. Engine is so silent combined with super silent cabin. Even the music system is above average and not many might need an upgrade. It does the work well. When I'm writing this review car had done only 700 kms. My first highway drive gave me 14 Kmpl. It was pretty good for a brand new engine. I'm sure mileage will increase after 5K kms. City drives are fetching me 8-10 Kmpl. This should improve after engine opens up.

Also, Punto has been taken by a good friend of mine. So I'm not worried anymore as we usually meet often. I can get to drive my Punto whenever I want.

I was comparing how much my thought process has changed on buying a car in 2012 vs 2017
During 2012 when I bought my Punto, they had a medium grey car which was 2 months old stock and was ready to give 30k discount. But I wanted white and neglected that offer. I was ready pay extra for a brand new car from factory of my favourite color. Now in 2017 I'm letting go of touchscreen and 10PS of power for 1.5L Lakh Rupees and ironically I have got a grey car, the color I rejected in 2012. As I'm growing older head is over powering the heart gradually, else I would have got Vcross, Abarth Punto or even the 125S. Finally I'm happy that I was able to decide on the right car satisfying both my head and heart. With ever increasing Fuel,Insurance and service costs along with all the Cess, it makes no sense for me to keep paying up through the nose every year for all that govt asks for. Added to that road tax issues while moving across states and not to forget the exorbitant tolls we pay every time we take the car out. All these factors were taken into consideration before throwing up all the money on a new car. It's not only about the initial expenditure but the recurring expenses which occur every year.

      Thanks for reading.
      Bye till then

cvanandh will stop talking to me if I buy any other car than FIAT. My 1100 event occurred because of one ride in Anandh's Super Select.

Thanks Flywheel. I have followed your Oceanic Blue Tjet's ownership keenly and the kind of mileage you used to get on highways gave me confidence to go ahead.
