TD'en the New Q7 Technology Pack!!!

Unexpectedly our S90 was not delivered on 10th march by the CBE dealer he is gave some stories like the vehicle has been cleared by the port authorities in Chennai harbour so we thought we can finalise our premium SUV.
As I have mentioned in my previous post we decided to TD the GLS350,Q7&X5
This review is only on Q7 45 TDI Technology Pack (OTR 1.02C) as we are yet to TD the other two vehicles.

From the front it looks less aggressive than the previous generation model
In order to shed weight for the sake of dynamics and fuel efficiency, the 2016 Q7 has shrunk in size. It is still huge, but the new edgy styling makes it look a little smaller than the old car. The new car isn’t as appealing as the bulbous older one, which had massive street presence. The front end is dominated by a huge grille, which has an aluminium finish. The good news is, the new car has shed 300 kgs of weight! Just because of the drop in weight, now even the 3L, V6 diesel Q7 gets the 45 TDI badge; in the older Q7, the more powerful 4.2L, V8 Diesel was present under hood. Sadly no petrol engine available unlike its competitors. But the dealer told there is going to be new version in the Q segment called SQ7 which will be hybrid performance version having more than 450BHP under hood.

The car features individual adaptive air suspension all round with variable ride height according to various drives modes and speed.
You get 6 Audi drive select modes
      1) All Road
      2) Comfort
      3) Dynamic
      4) Auto
      5) Individual (You can customise the engine, suspension steering according to your needs)
      6) off-road
LED headlamps are standard. LED foglamps are integrated in the headlamp clusters. They sit at the bottom of the clusters. The top end technology Pack gets 360 degree camera. The front parking camera is just located below the four rings.

Please zoom in to see the camera
Auto park assist which comes in handy to park this massive beast is present only in the top end IIRC!!! The rear parking camera is located above the registration plates.
The rubbers used in this demo vehicle was continental/Pirelli I'm not sure. 255/55 R19 rubber gave comfy ride!!! You get a spare wheel which occupies your 7th seat so it's your decision to decide wether you need your 7th occupant or decide to mount your spare wheel. Unlike the GLS350 there is no space saver well.
The rear seats can be electrically folded and surprised package was the raising and lowering of the rear suspension with just a touch of a button behind the rear seats to ease loading goods in to the boot space which is absent in GLS350!!!
The car gets a lots of plastic cladding on the sides.

The current generation Audi's get a new badging system not sure how many of you know the actual meaning and how Audi is assigning them. It's purely based on the performance of the vehicle rather than the engine size. It's based on the physics formula V=u+at!!! Strictly not going beyond that as I'm not a mathematical master. The Q7 gets 45TDI badge.

The new Audi design theme not only looks fresher compared to its competitors , also the choice of the switchgear and aluminium buttons lend a premium feel to it. The colour combination of the interiors is brown and beige - the top part is dark brown while the lower part is beige in colour, with some wooden inserts and brushed aluminium textures highlighted by bright aluminium finish lines, which look richer than chrome.

The interiors are a big step up compared to the old car. The dashboard is mounted low, which helps with good front visibility than compared to the GLS350!!! The steering wheel has the familiar Audi design, but with loads of buttons on it. The speedometer console is an LCD display. Gone are the old, large analogue meters in the top end spec. They have been replaced by this LCD screen, which has virtual analog meters that look like the actual ones. This screen displays a large amount of information - everything from trip data to navigation maps, which can be browsed through using the controls on the steering wheel. The good thing is, the temperature and fuel gauge get independent displays on either side of the LCD. The visibility, even on a bright sunny afternoon is excellent. Even when using the GPS navigation, the directions can be displayed at various zoom levels.

The center console houses the HVAC control and a few assist systems like the Automatic Parking Assist and Hill Descent Control among others. There no buttons for the AWD system - the only related controls are either the Offroad drive mode in drive select modes, or the ESP, which can be used in Offroad mode. You also get a large scribble pad in the centre console which recognises your handwriting. The scribble pad was quite large compared to the one in GLS. The response was quick when compared to the GLS.

You get 4- zone climate control which cooled the cabin in the scorching heat of Madurai. The aircon vents are massive in Q7. GLS even though the vehicle was parked inside the showroom the AC was bit down when compared to Q7.
The cruise control stalk is located way below the steering which I personally found it very difficult to operate. We don't get adaptive cruise control in India due radar based safety issues.
Even the night vision assist, which has pedestrian and animal detection features is not available in India.

The small center screen on the top is mainly used for the MMI display. It’s not a touch screen and is placed far from both the driver and the passenger. The MMI system is controlled through the knobs and multiple buttons near the gear lever. If you don't need the screen to be present on the top just press a button and it gently goes straight down.
For navigation you can either use the voice command or just use the scribble pad. The maps are 3D type, which look cool and realistic. The maps display in the meter console ensures that there is no more looking at the center screen while driving. The Q7 sold in India does not come with SIM slot, hence there are no real-time traffic updates, smart navigation, and the GPS system is offline only. The voice command worked pretty decently than expected. It helped us locate a nearby hotel in the Dindigul bye pass which was a isolated area. It was a surprise that it could locate it fast and correctly . To take you to a nearby restaurant all I needed to do was just say the word "Hungry".

The front seats are large and accommodating, but the side bolstering is not prominent as it is in some sport seats. Even the squab is pretty large and with the twin side seat height adjustment the under-thigh support can be adjusted as per preference. Surprisingly, either heated or cooled seats are not available in the Indian car.

There no buttons for the AWD system - the only related controls are either the Offroad drive mode in drive select modes, or the ESP, which can be used in Offroad mode. The ESP system has three modes - pressing the button briefly will activate the Offroad mode and pressing it longer than 3 seconds will switch off the ESP system.

The night vision assist, which has pedestrian and animal detection features is not available in India. Even the radar-based adaptive cruise control is not available in India. The cruise control system is of a regular type with a speed limit function.

The small center screen on the top is mainly used for the MMI display. It’s not a touch screen and is placed far from both the driver and the passenger to be of any use even if it had the touchscreen functionality. The MMI system is controlled through the knobs and multiple buttons near the gear lever.

There are multiple places to select the drive modes - dedicated buttons on the top of the AC console, through the MMI interface and the star button on the steering wheel.

The input for GPS navigation is through gestures on the MMI pad. It’s a difficult and time-consuming process. In comparison, the newer touch-based systems are more convenient. Unlike the Volvo XC90, the maps are 3D type, which look cool and realistic. The maps display in the meter console ensures that there is no more looking at the center screen while driving. The Q7 sold in India does not come with SIM slot, hence there are no real-time traffic updates, smart navigation, and the GPS system is offline only.

Even the squab is pretty large and with the twin side seat height adjustment the under-thigh support can be adjusted as per preference. Surprisingly, either heated or cooled seats are not available in Indian car.

The rear seats have smaller squab, which I also found to be lacking in under-thigh support in comparison to the sedans. The backrest though is large and comfortable. The recline angle is adjustable, but the seats do not completely recline. The GLS sears do not recline at all!! The adjusters for the middle row are not electric type. All 3 portions of the middle row can be independently reclined. Even the middle passenger gets a proper three-point seatbelt. The middle row seats do not slide. The middle armrest is just average in terms of comfort. The legroom is generous. There are no infotainment system controls for the middle row passengers, they just get 2 split climate control zones.

The last row seats are extremely tight on space. Even short adults will struggle to fit in. The last row of seats are electrically foldable. The Mercedes-Benz GLS offered an acres of space in the third row.

If you judge the build of the car by the feel of closing the doors and associated thuds, you'd be surprised with the new Q7. Even after the 300 kg weight loss, it feels solid like a tank.
The sunroof covers almost all of roof till the second row. When the curtains were opened the cabin looked very bright and not of much noise when the roof was opened during driving.
Bose 3D audio is standard across the Q7 variants.

Engine can be started with the key in your pocket. In events of emergency, the engine can be switched off while moving by pressing the "START ENGINE STOP" button twice in quick succession or by holding it for longer than two seconds.

All cabin lights are LED type just touch the light and its lit .

      ENGINE:

The new Q7 is powered by a 2,967 cc, V6 diesel engine that makes 245 BHP @ 2,910-4,500 rpm and 600 Nm of torque @ 1,500-3,000 rpm. As soon as you fire up the engine, the first thing that comes to your mind is the fabulously controlled NVH. The engine is absolutely silent at any engine speed except when close to the redline.
In the Comfort mode, the gearbox shifts up early and smoothly. This is the perfect mode for relaxed driving and highway cruising. Thanks to the lost weight, the new Q7 does not feel like a bulky SUV around the bends. It is good fun to throw around.

      Off-roading
The sales consultant just took us for a short off-road spin as it was the first we were experiencing drifting it was an exhilarating experience and we were surprised by the performance of the vehicle. But an unexpected event happened while drifting the car chassis hit a big stone and cracked something and black fluid started dripping continuously till we reached the showroom after nearly 40-60 kms of TD in a heavy rain. When inquired what had happened he didn't know exactly what had happened but told us if something serious it will be displayed on the MMI. But still we went around 40 kms after the incident the vehicle didn't show any unusual response.
      Electrical niggle:
In one incident when he was explains us the hill ascent and hill hold assist the "AUTO BRAKE" button wasn't working the second time when tried to use it he repeatedly kept trying but was of no use didn't work till the end. What could be the reason??.
The above review is purely based on my personal experience during the TD yesterday. Any suggestions to improve my write up most welcome.
So guys we are yet to TD the GLS350 and X5 which we will doing it only after April 10th due to certain business meetings. So my next review will be on the Ownership report of S90!!! and a compilation TD review of Q7, GLS350 and X5.

If the button malfunctions within first 20000 km then i will have doubts on let alone purchasing, but even recommending the vehicle to anyone.

My blood boils when I hear that "Indian versions do not get this.... Do not get that...."
Oh Come on!. We pay top money for everything we buy. Everything here is way overpriced already. The second treatment really hurts.
