Having just gone through the same cycle, here are my thoughts.

I have an old Dell inspironn 14 3000 series with 8G RAM and an i3 quad core processor with an integrated Intel Haswell card and an external 2GB Nvidia MX20 graphics card. I ran Ubuntu on this all these years and was happy. Aprt from a sick battery, everything I did was on this and it fared well. Everything includes programming, reading, creating videos, accessing different cameras like GoPpro's, Sony, Nikon etc and i had no reason to complain. Laptop is 6 years old and going good.

      What changed?

      1. Formats. Gopro Hero 8 started using HVEC/H.265 which the i3 processor could not handle.
      2. Screen resolution of 1366x768 was just not doing the camera 4K resolutions any good.
      3. Rendering higher grade video output was difficult as most dedicated Non linear editors need superior graphics processors and more CPU cores for doing any serious work.
      4. Accessing multitude of input devices..SD cards, USB A/C, HDMI, mini display ports, thunderbolt for fast data transfers.
      5. Gaming (screen refresh rates amd GPU's again)

The configurations you listed are good. In case, u also need to attempt points 1 to 5, do check out the choices based on these attributes as well.

I have both Apple MBA13 (since 2014 March) as well as DELL XPS13 (2018 March), both working fine. both are very portable, light weight. My usage is mostly for office work, general isecondary research, browsing, reading. I don't watch movies on PCs, I don't play games as well. personally i like MBA better for the following reasons

      (1) OS is like a rock, zero crash, reset etc.
      (2) Zero frequent notifications, whatever are there are silent and not disturbing my work
      (3) Does not require Virus protection softwares as in Windows.
      (4) Usage time per charge is high, even now charge the MBA once in few days, charging is also quicker.
      (5) Microsoft Office for Mac looks more refined than windows from an ease of use perspective, though office on windows 10 is much more feature rich.

Having said this Windows machines have more utility value

      (1) most of the office utilities are pre-bundled
      (2) much more peripheral interfaces (USB, SDCard, HDMI/VGA...)
      (3) the developer ecosystem is much more wider especially if you are user of CAD/Graphics/Editing tools etc.
      (4) of course machines are cheaper.

my suggestion to you, if you have not used Apple MacBook before, you have a learning curve and also need to make some compromises when you switch to Apple. If you don't want to do it, then you can remain with windows or DELL machines. Let us know which one you bought eventually.

Apple environment can be a hit or a miss when you start lurking around for the 1st time. You will either like it or hate it due to certain closed software architecture like itunes.

I have been with Mac since 1989 having worked in the publishing environment. Even today I use an occasional mac mostly in relation to that, otherwise it is all windows.

I would ask you to tread carefully before moving over to Mac though you can run windows as well in it through the Apple native bootcamp or other tools (though I don't advice it).

Dell really looks good all around though and would be my advise to go with.

Som, I use a laptop for similar stuff like you do.

For years I've had to struggle with Windows Laptops crashing, BSOD, highly unreliable machinery if you ask me.

Then I made the switch to the Macbook Pro in 2014 and have never had to look back. I am not a huge fan of Apple products and probably would never buy an I-Phone or an I-Pad but their MacBooks are kickass. Yes, there is a learning curve with the switch, but it's not something you have to worry about. A week into the switch, you'd have figured everything out. If not YouTube Video Tutorials are very helpful.

I've had my MBP crash ONCE in 6yrs. Just rebooted it and never faced an issue after that. After 6yrs of abuse, it's now showing that the battery needs to be changed. So planning to drop it of at an Appple Authorized Service Centre once I take a full back up of the data on my MBP.

I also have a Windows Laptop for Audio RTA Tuning and Remapping. I use that only for work. And work related E-Mail. Inspite of that I've had that thing crash every now and then and honestly fed up of having to use a Windows based OS for my work.

If most of the remapping and DSP tools worked with Mac OS, I'd never touch a Windows laptop again.

Also, a lower spec Mac will anyday be quicker than a higher spec Windows. Don't ask me why and how. That's just how it is.

PS - Not an Apple fan, in fact I bash Apple at every opportunity I get. But their Macbooks definitely deserve a praise.

Thanks! Asus works out to be expensive for my required config.

Good to know that Dell Inspiron is still serving fine.
And yes as you said, as time passes apps demand higher memory/processing power. Hence trying to get 10th Gen based processor. And my usage will be mainly MS Office and Browser based activity both of which need healthy dose of RAM and occasional photo editing definitely needs faster processor along with memory.

I was considering MBA for exactly the reasons that you mentioned. My intended usage at least for now is not heavy as it'll be replacing an old laptop which was serving as a music server and occasional browsing/MS Office activity. Also the reason I wanted to try out a new OS as steep learning curve will not have any impact on productivity as such.

That's a solid fall back option for sure. It works out cheaper when I consider all other brands for the same config.

This is something I've read/heard consistently that Macs age well. Also the reason why I'm looking for 2018 MBA option even though it has couple of gen older processor.
Given a choice I'd love to pick up MBP13 but that's expensive! and I started with a budget of 30K INR to speak

In all, I need to decide on the option by today -will keep you informed. By the way, Croma Webstore site is built by an intern I guess - very frustrating.

EDIT: Apple in it's ad video mentions that 2018 MBA is powered by dual core processor but as I check online i5 8th gen always has had min of 4 cores - strange!

I have been using Mac for long time 24/7, new Macs are flimsy, if you buy get their insurance. My 2016 had display & battery issue, in both cases it was almost full replacement. For battery there was recall, my laptop serial was not listed, so had to wait for issue to appear (swollen laptop), they replaced chassis as well. MacOS is definitely better than Windows for most usage, rest is Processor and SSD for me.

Price: Around 54K INR On Desk [courtesy : 10% cashback on ICICI] on Dell India Webstore
      2. 2018 Macbook Air : comes with 8th Gen i5/8GB RAM/128 GB SSD/Mac OS
Price: Around 62K INR On Desk [courtesy: some redeemable award coupons + 2K cashback] on Croma Webstore
Between the two I prefer the Dell. If it was a Macbook Pro instead of the Air, the choice would have been different.
Usually the dell comes with extra stuff like backpack etc. If you order directly through them, you can get those excluded and reduce the cost.

      Thanks guys!

By the time I could see these comments or piyush7243 could speak to me on phone I had pressed the purchase button. And the laptop that I bought is DELL Inspiron 5490!

      https://www.dell.com/en-in/shop/lapt...c-2a18859960cc

I was really tempted by MBA 2018 [128 GB version] pricing on Croma but strangely none of them could be delivered to my pin code. But the ones with 256 GB had that option but the pricing was close to a lac! That coupled with many other suggestions helped me decide on Dell. Considering 10% cashback which I'll receive in next 90 days, it cost me 54K INR.

There was a last minute entry of HP Pavilion x360 with 10th Gen i5/8GB/256 GB SSD on Reliancedigital. With the help of gift coupons I could've got it for for around 50K INR[Retail is 67K INR] but then touchscreen is not our requirement + HP looks like a gen older compared to Dell and has lower SSD Capacity. And I can utilize gift coupon to buy something else.

In the end probably either[Mac/Win] option would've been ok considering my usage but I opted for versatility/upgrade-ability and VFM option. In this course I found that the Lenovo has the best online configurator giving users detailed options to upgrade/downgrade hardware/softwares.

Thanks all again.. now the long wait begins!

PS: Now I can peacefully close those 10s of tabs on chrome was using for comparison!

For that you would need min 16GB. I agree that macbook is good but for your requirements (ms office) windows will always be better. Congratulations on the purchase. Please make sure you but extended warranty n damage plans
