VW 1.5TDI Diesel clatter fix with VCDS

Among the problems commonly present with the VAG 1.5TDI post emissions firmware updates is the issue of Diesel clatter and generally noisy engines.

VW has a service procedure for adjusting injection quantity deviation they have traditionally recommended for fixing morning clatter in these engines, and that seems to work well for this case also.

Here is a sweet and short tutorial on how to fix it with a VCDS cable.

Start engine before start of service procedure. Transmission in neutral, parking brake on.

The sequence is - Open VCDS - select control module - engine (01) - basic settings - adapting injector minimum deviation quantity - Go (start) - after start of procedure, hold accelerator and brake pedal until procedure completion.

After the service procedure starts, the RPM will keep rising to 3000 and other magical things the ECU will make the engine do. At the end you will have a quiet and refined engine. Watch attached screen shots to see how the text changes in the basic settings window.

Please let me know if any of you have questions or need help doing this.

And strongly recommend legal and updated installs of VCDS before you do engine adaptation work.

Here is a short video of what the car does during this service procedure -

I just was telling a client who came to the shop that his brand new Vento was noisy and clattering like hell. I've asked him to get in touch with you soon Sajan. It's almost disturbing to drive a new car like that. Not sure what VW are doing these days post the emissions scandal.

They should be doing this service procedure after every post emissions scandal flash.

And if folks from VW service centers are reading, there is no rule that this should be done only on a cold engine. The service procedure probably says that for fixing morning clatter. Our issue is clatter at all times.

      Hi

I own a Nov 2016 Ameo 1.5 TDI which is the EA189 series engine which was launched post the emission issue. I have confirmed that there are no updates required for this. However I have the regular VW clatter at cold starts and gets reduced after considerable amount of time. Sometimes stays overtime if the temp is hot. Wanted to know if I too have to do the workaroud mentioned above. Already have got the VAG cable and have done minor tweaks, so comfortable with it. Do let me know if my engg would need this fix.

Have not worked on this car yet. AFAIK, the engine/ecu is different from the Polo/Rapid/Vento 1.5 TDI.

But if you can, ask the showroom if they can do an adaptation for injector minimum deviation quantity, and if that works, the same should work with VCDS as well.

      Hola!!

Thanks a ton to Sajan. His relentless effort to find a fix to my problems is the only reason why I'm content with my drive now. BTW, the thread here talks about my 1.5 TDI Polo GT.

      Problems faced after SW update:-
      1. Completely different engine behavior/ drive experience compared to before.
      2. Huge clatter everytime at lower gears.
      3. Huge drop in performance. Gone was the aggressiveness in the 2nd gear.

The sole reason of buying a GT version went down the gutter after the update and I was then having a sub power car good for mom and dad driving.

I was in Bay 6 Bangalore, frequently as I saw the only hope to get things back in place was this place. We got the car tuned. Got back the performance and the power was much more. So I added a R badge to my GT. Its GT-R now. LOL.

But now the thing was clatter which was a real headache and a challenge. But after multiple tunes and methods put in place, we have finally cracked it on a Sunday. Yes- Sajan helped me on a Sunday. More on that on the thread below. Suggest anyone facing diesel clatter and performance issue on TDI engines from VW to follow the above mentioned or please head over to Bay6/Code6.
