Tata Tiago XZ Diesel "the Usain Bolt" Ownership & Buying Review

As you all know I was contemplating buying a diesel hatch for my parents and finalised Tiago XZ Orange ( ). This is a thread to documents all about it.

Lets start with a conversation I had with my Dad (who will be driving the car) 2 days after the car was bought.

Dad: I have to upshift gear at 1800 RPM Right?
(He was driving spark petrol earlier and have not driven any diesel hatch so I explained to him about driving diesel, turbo etc. and explained that Turbo spools at around 1800RPM and around 2000-25000 RPM is where you can upshift)

Me: No, I explained earlier you have to upshift at 2500 RPM

Dad: But the car is accelerating very fast by then

      Me: Enjoy the Pocket Rocket

      Dad:

Me: Turn on the Eco Mode

      What I love about Tiago

      Acceleration

This was the most surprising thing about the car. We had taken a TD but there is a big difference in the way TD car was responding and the way new car is responding. The car is really nimble from the start just like a runner taking a leap at the start and it keeps on going. After taking delivery the car was driven by Dad till home. After reaching home I decided to take a lap and was floored by the acceleration it gets. It really zooms from the start go and reaches 80 in blink of an eye. It requires a very short runway to reach it, and this is when I was not pushing it, being a new car.

The engine is very free revving and responsive to throttle input. There is a turbo lag but there is no turbo kick, its a very smooth linear transition into turbo range. The lag is not noticeable as the car gets into turbo zone in a jiffy and then the fun starts.

      Features

Airbags + ABS EBD Cornering Stability + Fog Lights + Alloys + 6 speaker harman system + steering mounted controls + height adjusted seat + rear defogger wiper + cooled glove box etc. etc. This car is chock a block with features. What I like is the ICE, its really great quality music. Plus like the safety features in this price range.

      Driving Dynamics

The car is really FTD, good acceleration and I did some sharp turns at high speeds and it was really stable and there was minimal body roll considering its size and height. It will never be as good as any low strung car into the corners but still did not feel wobbly in the corners. So overall considering its acceleration, the overall package is good. The steering is on the smaller side. The car also feels very composed at high speeds due to it heavier body.

      Comfort

The car really excels in this area. Its suspension is more comfort oriented and its a nice cabin to be in while driving. There is minimal noise except when you accelerate hard. The best part is it goes over broken road really smooth and dampens all the bad patches and potholes. The other good part are the seats, they are really snug.

      Pricing

This is the best part, getting such a good package at a great price was icing on the cake. I got the car for 6.25Lakhs on road with insurance. Have not taken AMC or extended warranty which I will take at first service. Also, I got 4K worth of accessories as bonus and they are really reasonably price. I took bumper guard + door side beading + mud flaps + gear lock. So no overpricing here.

      What could be better

      Rear bumper

The rear bumper has a black plastic part in it. The plastic on black portion looks very flimsy and there is a place for rear reflector which Tata forgot to add to the car. Thats a bummer.

      Showroom Quality

I did the TD and finalisation without going to the showroom and my SAs were very helpful and got everything done at my office. However, I visited showroom for delivery and was totally disappointed. The showroom was not well designed, the service at showroom was not satisfactory. My SAs got any earfull for no mistake of theirs. I even gave this feedback to the showroom manager and he said he has got this feedback and they will be shortly shifting to better showroom.

Tata is now coming out with good vehicles and have to pull up their socks in this department. They are not servicing only taxi buyers anymore.

      Steering Mounted Controls

These controls don't look that upmarket as compared to the overall quality of the car.

      RVM Adjustment Module

      These controls also look flimsy

So in conclusion if you are looking for a Feature Packed, Fun to Drive, Cheap Diesel Hatch then Tiago surely checks all the boxes. What is still to be seen is long term durability, reliability and Tata's Customer Service.

      Pics will follow shortly

PS: The paint polishing & finishing was not up to the mark (remember its coming for a Obsessive Compulsive Detailer). Most people would not notice the wool rotary pad fine swirls.

Congratulations to you and your Dad for owning it.

Certainly a smart buy in current world where safety / dynamics / comfort are prioritized over resale value and Maruti brand. Happy driving and keep up updated on how this car goes in future.

I was not thinking about resale price as the car will be kept for long time. Also, I don't like zuki cars as IMHO they are underpowered and are mostly ugly or boring (personal opinion).

Congrats. How would you compare this to your Amaze diesel. Tiago is suppose to be givegood mileage but nice to know you liked the car in other aspects already.

really good question, here are points to ponder over>

      • Both cars weigh similar, infact tiago is heavier by 20 Kgs
      • Tiago is more feature rich as compared to Amaze, though in lower models amaze may have more functions, but still Amaze would be costlier
      • Tiago is more FTD and you feel the acceleration, Amaze is a different setup as it has good 1-2nd gear acceleration but then it goes into a comfortable acceleration
      • Tiago is better over broken roads and feel more secure on high speeds
      • Amaze has excellent on road mileage, have to wait and see about Tiago mileage but it would be difficult for it to beat Amaze
      • Even though Tiago has better 0-80 acceleartion, amaze would beat it after 80 due to its 1.5L 4 pot engine
      • Amaze does not have a sports mode, whereas tiago has
      • Amaze has more boot space of course
      • amaze has better interiors but loses out on quality of ice. Also, tiago seats are much much better.
      • Honda reliability vs Tata (to be checked)
      • Honda has better resale value

In terms of drivability Amaze is like a more laid back sedan, it accelerates ok but you don't feel it much. Whereas, tiago has more aggressive setup for faster acceleration at the start and you can feel it in cabin, plus it has a turbo kick whereas Amaze has linear turbo from start. Tiago is also very composed on highway speeds and handles broken roads better at city speeds. Amaze on the other hand has less body roll and you can push it in corner. Amaze has better steering precision.

Amaze has lower rpm setup i.e. in most cases you will not exceed 2K RPM if you are not driving aggressively.

      Hi coolash,
I hope you enjoy your Tiago so far. How's the car holding up? Did you get a chance to detail it? I own a petrol Tiago in sunburst orange color and glad to know you own one too.

The car is fine, being used by my parents. Had a few runs lately and the car zips to 100 kmph without any effort at all. Haven't got time to take it beyond that but I am still amazed by its FTD factor. Didn't get time to detail it also. The paint condition was not excellent when received from dealer as I could notice rotary swirls all over the body, but thats only because I am a detailer, otherwise to everybody else it looked excellent. Due to other work and the car being with my parents, didn't get time to get the best out of its paint yet.

      Tiago Premature Clutch Blown

Latest Update: Tiago has blown the clutch at 14K KM. The incident happened today while my parent were driving to chandigarh on Eastern Peripheral. Suddenly, there was lack of acceleration and smell coming from the car. The car has been towed to the nearest service station in Hapur where its being replaced at a cost of approx 10K. I had driven the car yesterday and there was no hint of any clutch issue, the gears were slotting fine, no loss of acceleration, no sign of clutch slippage. The car has been serviced periodically at Tata Authorised Service Station. I have asked my father to take pictures during disassembly and take back the replaced parts so I can share the pics here.

      I have a few questions:

Do clutch blow off suddenly without warning?
Do I need to take care of something during replacement?

The service centre says its a wear and tear part so has to be replaced at our cost, but I am very surprised to see it blowing off at 14K Km. My father is a sedate driver but never runs the car half clutch. He had run Maruti 800 & Spark earlier for around 8-10 years without needing a clutch replacement.

If a clutch wears off in 14k KM, there is a something wrong with the clutch.

I don't think it'll give you any flashcard like warning - little hints here and there are possible.
