      Stage 3+ Upgrade - Borg Warner EFR7163 Build Update.

      Lots of things have changed in the recent few months on the vRS!

      We were planning a few Stage 3/3+ builds for our clients and decided to run a EFR7163 build on one of our customers cars. However, he backed out at the last minute after we had ordered all the parts. So decided, what the hell, let's put all of these on my car. Anyways, I was getting bored of the IS38 + WMI build.

      So we ordered the APR Stage 3+ kit which consists of a Borg Warner EFR7163 Full Frame Big Turbo.

      The kit consits of a ton of parts, and this being the first big turbo install on a EA888 G3 2.0TSI, we knew we'd have our work cut out. This is also the first full frame EFR build on a VAG car in India.

      The complete install took less than two days. Fitting the turbo was the easier part. We also had to swap the LPFP, HPFP & injectors apart from the stuff that came with the kit.

      The most difficult part of the install was the Injectors, for which the entire intake manifold had to come off.

      We ran into a few issues with the install, took us a week to iron out some bugs, on one such testing run, the car sputtered to a stop and refused to start back!

      007 noticed that the A-Pedal (throttle) wasn't working. Since we were just 5 mins from Tafe and it was 1am, we decided to drive the car there and see if we could diagnose the issue at Tafe itself.

      The next 24hrs proved to be quite a nightmare. While Tafe analysis was that the ECU has gone bad along with throttle body, intake manifold and a bunch of other things, they gave an estimate of anywhere between 5-8 lakhs for swapping parts out and they still wouldn't guarante that the car would be running 100% once this was done. We refused to go by their policy of replacing parts one by one to see what could be wrong, purely because the car is not under warranty. Worse, we were afraid that if a new ECU also blows, then we'd have two dead ECUs.

      So Venkat and I went about trying to figure out the root cause of the issue and that took us 2 more days. Eventually, it was a faulty 4bar MAP Sensor on the throttle pipe that had shorted, sending the ECU into "protect mode" there by cutting off throttle.

      The culprit that nearly gave us a heart attack.

      Since Tafe was kind and patient with us after the intial hesitation to let us diognose the issue our way, we decided to go ahead and get the water pump and thermostat assembly changed so that they could make some money for keeping the car with them for 4 days and letting us waste their time. Both the parts are prone to failure on the vRS, so might as well get it changed now, was our thought process. It cost me around 41k.

      The sensors took 5 days to come from USA, by then Tafe had changed the water pump and thermostat and the car was ready to go. And what a difference this setup made to the car! The car turned from a sprinting deer it was earlier into a monstorous and scary tiger on a rampage.

      The car now makes power where the IS38 would choke for air. When peak boost kicks in, the car has so much torque steer that it shifts 1 lane. Let's just say, it's scary, specially when the temperatures are below 20 degrees C.

      I am one of those guys who hate lowering cars and running stiff suspensions. I've given megazoid gyaan about how he's foolish to do this all his life. But this time I had to go ahead and do this myself. Driving this car without a suspension is inviting death upon yourself. So in go Racingline Struts and Springs. Sadly, this setup has caused the rear of the car to be much lower than the front. I've ordered some stuff to fix this issue, hopefully this will be sorted out soon.

      The next issue once the enhanced power and suspension were sorted out, was that the car just wouldn't stop! The OEM 340mm rotors and pads would just glow red-hot like an F1 car and I'd have no braking at all. So after a lot of thought process we went and ordered an APR 350mm Big Brake Kit which was delivered a few days ago. Gorgeous looking the calipers are.

      Now that we had the engine, suspension and brakes sorted out, we needed to put down power better. And the APR BBK needs 18" alloys, so we ordered some light weight Racingline Cup Edition alloys for the car. Each alloy weighs only 9.2kgs while the OEM alloys weigh 11.2kgs. 8kgs of lesser rotational mass will impact the drivability quite a bit and cause less strain on the engine to move the mass.

      We also ordered some Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres which are track/competition tyres.

      Just waiting to fit the brakes and take the car out for a drive sometime next week.

      So, the car without the suspension, alloys, tyres, running a 95 RON tune on a test run did 100-200kmph in a mere 7.8s.

      This is with nearly bald tyres, wheels spinning till about 150kmph.

      With better tyres, lighter alloys, stiffer suspension, lighter brakes, a 98 RON tune can't wait to see what it can do.

      In comparison to the old setup which did 100-160kmph in 4.7s, the EFR7163 does 100-160kmph in 4.1s.

      On the IS38 setup, touching 200kmph on our test road was impossible. Now the EFR setup does 200 with ease.

      I shall post a detailed review soon about the suspension, brakes, the entire big turbo setup in general, but till then wanted to update everyone of what we've been doing with the car.

      And for those who are wondering, what power does it make now? The current tune should be making 482HP and 590Nm Torque at the wheels. The build is capable of runing 536HP and 650Nm torque, but that would need much better fuel than what we get in India.

      A huge shout out to 007 and Blackworks for helping us with this build and making sure that it's running the way it should. None of these builds would have been possible without Venkat's support and perceiverance.

      megazoid, KRRaj, rksingh1 have had the opportunity to sit in the car post the EFR7163 install. They've already chipped in earlier on this thread.

      Should it not have thrown any sensor light or some other indication of a MAP sensor smoking out?

      These figures are unbelievable. I have felt all those horses moving my ass at 250kmph. I know what they are capable of.
