The Upgrades to JEEP ! Does it ever end !!

Dear Esteemed Member's and for those who have not read my previous post which is pretty much an old thread, do go through this link :-

Updates to MM.550 a.k.a Black Pearl

So what do we have here for 2018 and why it has been done so folks, here the why ? skip the paragraph below if you want to go straight to the works done..

With swap in DI turbo, the gear box was like 10yrs older, didn't match the speed and after 60/70 kmph can feel the strain, heat, noise, rattles and what not. With absolute conviction am no different from driving a mini truck screaming for your attention all the time, road's became highway to hell, potholes & bumps became 1st degree punishment and when roads didn't exsist it was whole new level of torture with sways, creaks, rumble's and finally praying to god i don't get tossed out. when its hot, and A/c being there it was hardly feeding me the required chillness, and when it rained, the second sky above the jeep's roof were not enough to wet the sides but whole carpet, i got down on my knees to pray. Pray for wisdom, knowledge, money & perfect set of experts. I believe i have been answered.

The Three part works as :-
      1. Changing GB to NGT 520
      2. Fixing the body area (patti & tinkering)
      3. Lining works
      4. The Finished Looks

      1. Changing GB to NGT 520

So approached our expert and all time favourite among chennai jeepers, Mr Jeep Ali as we fondly call him. With his advice, insights and execution, procured NGT 520 which took almost 20 days, literally un abused piece.
changed the radiator's, brake set (booster, diaphragm)
      Diesel pump serviced
Sound proof mats stuck on bonnet, firewall, footwells and under the GB plate as well
Differentials changed to 4.88 for better run on the highways
      etc etc etc

      2. Fixing the Body area (Patti & Tinkering)

This work was done under my supervision & ideas. So i used a well known acquaintance who is a close associate for more than 15 yrs in our household constructions etc.,So you will see, i had stripped the jeep, and worked area by area specially the rear.
The rubber mat was removed to reveal the TAR that ha been poured in the body either by previous owner or from the army direct during auction, whichever be the case, the corroded floor gives you and idea and number of holes on jeep for whatever reasons, lost count of counting them.
      1. fixing holes, corroded areas replaced with metal pieces and primed
      2. fixing aluminium 3mm sheet as partition & held by cross member (square tube of 2 inches thickness in shape of " H ")
      3. fixing aluminium 1.5mm sheet as roof for rear
      4. the fiber panel above driver's area (used water base primer 2 coats & new cool rubber paint 2 coats, to keep it waterproof and also deflects the heat nicely)

      3. The Lining Works

So with all works complete, wanted the liner, who is favoured in my locality and among chennai jeepers community for his hard work, ideas, sincerity and most important he won't extort you on money for items purchased and he will charge you only the labour/ day's wage. highly recommend Mr Parthiban from Sri Murugan lining works in Mannivakkam, tambaram area. Now the works done,
      1. carpet for roof, partition etc,
      2. for the partition we had used 1 inch thick industrial foam, which helps in maintaining the chillness of the a/c. later covered with carpet material
      3. removed the standard company seats and used seats for sitting with 2 inch soft foam, 1 inch semi hard foam for a comfort yet firm seats. saves lot of leg space and looks nice on the jeep.

      4. The completed work

The jeep has transformed to quite a comfortable one. A/c is good, rattling, squeaks and other noise pollution is minimised, i would say on good roads, these are literally non existent, on bad roads, other than few body roll, thuds, squeaks, specially the rattles is long gone or barely audible.

Verdict : I have my jeep as primary source of travelling. I did attend 3 days of BODA 2018 in bangalore this January and loved every bit of it. But the aftermath of what happens to your jeep end of the day and the long hours of time & money spent goes out for a toss that moment when you break or know something is not right. I have decided to stick to mild offloading and enjoy my long hours of driving in jeep On Road, hence the journey to make it the best in whatever creature comfort that i require.

I totally love offloading if i had another vehicle at my disposal, sadly i don't but i participate as co driver for future events and thats a separate thread. will be most happy to answer all your questions.

Sure nothing like helping a fellow jeeper..

      1. Raw Materials

3mm Aluminium sheet (size of partition required)
1.5mm Aluminium sheet (size of roof in rear)
metal runners, as u can see at the top of rear tub, welded, 2 inch
square tube for partition to bolt on and welded to chassis and frame (1.5 inch thickness 10kgs)
square tube for covering pushing the partition to wheel wheel, as needed space for seats to recline in front ( 2.5 inch thickness, 6kgs)
self thread screws 100 nos (1/2 inch)
      Aluminium rivets 10nos
Asian Paints yellow primer 1 litre
Dr Fix it (New coat cool, rubber paint) available only in 4 litres ** used for front roof fibre panel **
Nippon (water base primer) available in 1 litre ** used for front roof fibre panel **
      Additional bits & pieces

Total cost around INR 9000/- GIVE OR TAKE

      2. Labour

      3 days work (1 helper & Two fabricators/welders). Total cost INR 9000

      3. Liner Works

2 days of work. Total cost Labour ( INR 2500 + Materials (INR 4500)

Hope it answers your question. Certain items or labour may seem over priced or under priced, but the work was done at my home, at my convenience. so with constant monitoring and ensuring perfection was possible. this had significant advantage over leaving the jeep at their shop which is on road side with no support , safety, etc etc

for lining works i spent literally 10 hrs both the days to get it done again to my needs and my detail for perfection that i had wanted. So that extra INR /- people may say i could have saved goes against leaving an unsupervised vehicle for working under strict supervision and guidance. so money spent was worth it. You can bargain and fix prices if you know the workers well, in my case this is bargained prices.
