is 1.5D Engine getting standardized in India for Diesel vehicles ?

Recently Tata Nexon was showcased in our apartment. I had a short test drive. the sales guy from the dealership was sharing that it is a 1500 cc diesel engine. I also read some FORD vehicle ownership mentioning 1.5D in the title thread.

Few years ago, 1.3L diesel engine were being spoken about (FIAT, FORD, Suzuki, Tata etc). Now i feel many OEMs speak about 1.5D.

Is it that OEMs developed a different engine which provides just 200cc additional displacement ?, i do not think so. Are they ...

      (1) boosting the power of 1.3L engine with tuning
      (2) detuning 1.9L engine to 1.5L

      just a dumb thought !!!

They're all new engines, complying to the latest emission norms and power requirements of the market as such.

Most of the older engines are nearing the end of life cycle. So most of them are developing new engines keeping in mind the CC limitations set by ARAI.

Keeping it less than 1500cc gives the car manufacturers tax benefits.

I still do not get it. just for 200 cc extra, every OEM will refresh their Engine Design ?

What has changed dramatically in terms of emission norms, power requirements or fuel efficiency between say 3 years ago and now ?

I think they are kind of trying a one shoe fits all strategy. This helps with economy of scale. 1.5 is the max diesel size before the next tax slab kicks in. So whenever they are designing new engines, they keep it at 1.5 and various models can use detuned and tuned versions of this 1.5 engine.

The 1.3 DDIS from Maruti and the 1.4 TDCI from Ford was getting long in the tooth w.r.t emissions, efficiency, power etc. So I think it is more of "we need the next gen engine, so why not 1.5".

VW used to have 2 diesel engines in India. the 1.2 TDI which was kind of under-powered and the 1.6 TDI which attracted higher tax. So in 2014 they replaced both with 1.5 TDI with Polos getting the 230 Nm/90 BHP version and Polo GT/Ameo/Vento getting the 250 Nm/110 BHP .

Petrol engines also did similar stuff. Earlier we used to have lot of 1+ and 1.1 liter engines. Given the tax slabs at 1.2, all manufactures ended up with 1.2 engines.

Think about the global scenario and not just India. Most of the engines made in 1/2 engine manufacturing plants are exported to other countries as well. So makes no sense for them to retain the old engines for nations like India and build newer engines to support the newer emission norms in US/Europe/Japan.

The easier thing for them to do is keep the engine the same, but change the bore x stroke size with a few ancilliary parts and meet targets like in India. And sell the same engines without detuning them to other nations where there are no similar caps.

A lot seems to be changing wrt to emissions, cars like the Golf R, Golf GTI, Audi RS3 were all banned from production in Europe a few months ago, VAG group was asked to detune the cars to meet emission norms and then were allowed to be sold. Even the proudction of Octavia RS in Europe has been banned right now IIRC because of emission norms.
