I heard Kanakapura road is getting widened and road work is going on, how bad is it?

Yes, widening is going on. It is not bad at all.
A part of the road is blocked with some wood barricade for widening. The rest of the road is wide enough to hold 2 way traffic without the median. Since the traffic is sp****, it is lot less stressful. I would recommend it if you can manage the heavy traffic till crossing the NICE road (or taking NICE road till exit to Kanakapura road)

If there are elderly people travelling, it's better to stick to mysore road itself. The road by itself is quite good and twists and turns are relatively lesser. Have been taking mysore road quite a bit recently and I found the mayhem surprisingly less. Maybe because of the journey times...

I tried the SH33 Maddur to Kunigal stretch while returning from mysore y'day. The road condition is excellent, the traffic is thin and with very few villages, I did not encounter too many speed breakers either. If your destination lies in the north-west bangalore, this turns out to be a good option.
EDIT : Had to replace the word s-p-a-r-s-e with thin, as the former got starred out(sp***)!

You can use the same road till Melukote and reach Mandya-Mysore highway which connect after Mandya

I actually go via Melukote most of the time so that I can stop for a meal at Subanna's mess .
The lack of loos when travelling with family along that way made me to compromise with the next best and shorter SH33 route.

Yes, at the Melukote temple town itself. There is only one item on the menu as far as I know. We just ask for meals and it is all veg.
Good Puliyogare and sweet pongal. Instant mix powders/pastes and pickles are also available and we find them pretty good.
