Question Compact SUV. Upto 12Lac on-road. Diesel + Automatic

      Hello friends,

I've been helping one of my relatives in purchasing a compact SUV for his business needs.

      The requirements are:

      1. Diesel + automatic. Running is 5 to 6K a month.
      2. Reliability and easy maintenance.
      3. Good comfort on bad roads (industrial areas, remote locations with bad roads)
      4. Running on Highways would be say 4.5K a month. Another 1.5K on internal roads as stated in point 3
      5. He would be driven around for 90% of the time by the driver. The remaining 10% would be personal off-work use (with family of 4).

I suggested Nexon XMA as it would fit in his budget (new one is costlier by almost 55K as compared to older model). After a TD he was not much satisfied as he felt the gear changes owing to an AMT transmission. Similar experience in the Duster AMT.

Budget is 12 Lacs max. Would be a company owned vehicle. Location - Gujarat.

      Please provide your suggestions.
      Pardon my lack of knowledge.

There are very less options in Diesel + Automatic combo.

That feel is going to be there in an AMT/AGS transmission.

This would be the right car for his needs and which meet his requirements(except the AMT part).

Ask him to check out Mahindra XUV300 as well.

Not much option here apart from nexon and xuv300. However, as you said you will be chauffeured 90% of the times, there are lots of option in diesel manual.
Still, if no compromise on Diesel AT combo in the quoted budget, you can go for Honda Amaze. It has decent GC and good ride quality with CVT for a smooth ride. It comes loaded in VX CVT trim.

As abhi_tjet has mentioned, you could drop automatic as a requirement. When car is going to driven by driver 90% of the time, get a manual diesel CSUV. This will open up more CSUV options to choose from: Nexon, TUV, Ecosport, Brezza, XUV3oo etc.

And if you are open for used car option, you could find some low run full size SUV/MUV in that price range: Storme, XUV5oo, Scorpio, Hexa.

Since running is so high, if daily range does not exceed 200 kms, he could look at Nexon EV. Available at 14L. It will be an automatic and would save a lot on running costs. Not sure if Gujarat has any benefits for EV like no road tax etc. With this running, he will recover initial extra 2L within 2 years.

speed79 abhi_tjet Evolution88 - Thanks for the inputs. I also suggested XUV3OO, but it seems it is not as VFM and has smaller boot. If nothing else works, it looks like it will be diesel manual then. I'm thinking to recommend Ford Ecosport, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV3OO
speed79 - He is not open for used car options, so looks like not many options at the moment. I'm not sure if Brezza would be able to handle the abuses of bad roads well. Daily running would be 200 kms+ on an average day. So looks like EV is not an option here.
abhi_tjet - Thanks for the suggestion. But not sure if Amaze will be able to bear the harsh riding conditions of the industrial areas. Also Honda maintenance is tad expensive?
Evolution88 - How is the maintenance aspect of the XUV3OO? Is it exp to maintain? Given that running is going to be a lot.

Not sure about that part. Don't know anyone from my circle who use that vehicle.
May be J.Ravi, Lvramanan, rksingh1, NAGA, krish who have/had XUV500 can comment on the maintenance part.

Tagging a XUV300 owner, VivekSuresh as well.

Also, consider TUV 300, generally body on frame chassis are more abuse friendly on broken roads. Its AMT is not reliable though, I think it has also been discountinued. Talk to some owners to get better perspective.

My XUV annual maintenance was between 10-15k whenever there was an oil change interval hitting otherwise it was around 7.5K-9K. XUV300 should also be around 5-10K I suppose, that's my ball park estimate.

Rule out automatics unless you want to suggest a Hyundai Venue which has a good TC automatic. Its a small vehicle though, even by compact SUV standards.

As everyone suggested, a manual is a good option with a driver. XUV300 is a pretty comfortable vehicle, but its boot space is small. Marazzo is a good comfortable option with lots of space and can take bad roads very well.

In compact segment, for bad roads I would prefer vehicles in this order - Marazzo (not a compact SUV though), Venue, XUV300, Nexon, Ecosport, Brezza, TUV300. I have/had a Brezza and its suspension is very stiff and can give a jarring experience on continuous stretch of bad roads. TUV300 is very bouncy, but when fully loaded it can withstand bad roads well. Its a rural area fav.

TUV300 Plus adds a lot of space and the 120bhp mHawk engine from Scorpio to the mix. ok.....my list of recommendation is growing and thats how confusing the market can get.
