Cool Of Misty Roads, Dense Jungles and Hill Stations - A Dark Knight Travelogue

This vacation was planned some time back, but was a non starter. So when again we had the chance, I straight away planned for this trip again. Confirmed the Dates and Bookings and soon everything was set. The Planned departure Date was 20th Dec.

Since my parents were against Night Driving, we factored in an extra day to reach Pollachi and start from there early morning. Accomodation was booked in Hotel Shakti.

Dec 20th - 6:45 AM, we started from Bangalore. We decided on taking the Bangalore - Salem - Avinashi - Palladam - Pollachi route. At around 8:00 AM, we reach our usual hadda, Krishna Inn at Shoolagiri . After having breakfast, we started again and soon were in Salem by 11:00 AM.

Some snaps between Krishnagiri and Salem.

The Deviation from Salem to NH47 was simple enough what with directions and pictures posted to guide me here . NH47 is an awesome 4-laned road. Not much traffic and a Speed Limit of 100.

We stopped at a road side tea-shop for some good tea, some distance outside Salem. The weather was great for driving. We had drizzle, then rain till Krishnagiri. Then bright sunshine, then again Cloudy weather, this continued all the way.

Last time during my Kuttikanam drive, there was a dearth of hotels on this route and we stopped somewhere after Avinashi for lunch. I was not fancying taking my parents there, but new restaurants have popped up. There were a few along the Perundurai Byepass and we stopped at one Veg restaurant - Sree Annalakshmi Hotel at around 12:30 PM. The Food was decent and we started from there after more than an hour.

We decided to stick on NH47 and take the deviation at Avinashi towards Palladam and Pollachi. But at Avinashi we were told we have to touch Tirupur to go to Palladam which I wanted to avoid.

One Cab Driver then mentioned us to take a left at a junction further beyond which will lead to Pollachi straight. I knew that worst case, I continue on the NH and get onto Kovai Byepass and then take a left. But the Junction came and after a deviation for Bridge Work, we took a lovely route with fields and windmills plenty. We joined Palladam - Pollachi route midway and soon found ourself at Hotel Shakti. The MapMyIndia GPS helped in this stint.

A snap of the windmills.. There were a lot of windmills on this route.

Hotel Shakti is a OKish hotel if you are staying only for a Night. Seems it was a very popular hotel once, but the rooms are not really maintained as clean as one would have liked. Decent and no rude staff. Car parking available behind in a shed and only 3-5 vehicles will get covered parking.

Their Website - http://sakthihotels.com/ . Located on The Kovai - Pollachi road itself..

Any other details required, pls ask

      Day 1 :

Total Distance Travelled : Bangalore to Pollachi - 397km

Route - NH7 from Bangalore till Salem, then NH47 onwards.
Take a left on NH47 at a place called Karuthampatti which comes a few kms after Avinashi and you are on SH166. Keep on this till you reach Palladam - Pollachi Road and then take it all the way towards Pollachi.

We started from Bangalore at 6:40AM and reached Pollachi around 4:00PM taking almost 9 Hours with 3 breaks in-between.
Evening we just went for some shopping and an early dinner later, we got into bed soon for an early start

We planned next day to leave by 6:30 AM from the Hotel in order to reach Sethumadai Checkpost as early as possible. The Plan was to Reach Top Slip, have the breakfast at the canteen there, check whether we can take the Safari and then proceed to Parambikulam.

But then there was the usual delay and we left only around 7:00 AM. Enquired the route from an Auto guy and he gave precise accurate directions . We stopped for Tea enroute and soon we were on the way to Topslip . The Roads were great till near the Checkpost, becoming bad a few kms before.

Then we were at the Checkpost. The Weather was very moist and chilly, but no sign of any rain which was my only worry.
