      My Scorpio, 2,40,000 kms old

Now that my non-crde 2005 Scorpio has crossed 2,11,000 kms, time to take stock of how it has performed.

How much was it driven each year?
      Year
      2005, 50981 kms
      2006, 42628 kms
      2007, 41370 kms
      2008, 39091 kms
      2009 - till Oct 31, 37458 kms

Maximum distance covered in a single month was 12349 kms in Dec 2005.

      What mileage did I get?
      Overall - 10.30 kmpl
The best yearly mileage (2008) was 10.53 kmpl
The best mileage I got was 11.53 in the first month of acquisition (Jan 2005) when I kept sedate running-in speeds!

My average lifetime cost is Rs 3.48 per km for diesel. I have used premium diesel at least 50% of the time.
In general, I got better mileage with ordinary diesel, although I have not calculated that separately.

Watch out - I am coming with statistics on maintenance cost next!

Kumar Sir! Its nice to see you here and with so much of travelling it simply amazes me about the way you have your statistics all zeroed in to the minutest detail. Wish! I were like you. I guess no one can beat you on this.

      Maintence History

Here is the stats on maintenance cost after completing 2,11,020 kms (as of Oct 31, 2009).

I spent Rs 1.82 per km in maintaining the Scorpio over its lifetime.

      First 50,000 kms - Rs 0.69
      Second 50,000 kms - Rs 2.10
      1-1,50,000 kms - Rs 2.29
      1,5-2,00,000 kms - Rs 1.94
      Over 2,00,000 kms - Rs 0.67

The maximum maintenance costs were incurred on:
      - Tyres, 20%
      - Brakes, 12%
      - Suspension, 10%

Accident repairs was only Rs. 0.10.
      No insurance claims.

      Transmission:

I have changed clutch plates twice, first at 91,286 kms and the second at 1,44,005

      Tyres

I guess I got good tyre life:
      - First change was at 75,750 kms
      - Second change was 68,485 kms later
      - Third Change was earlier, after 51,088 kms

Interestingly, the tubed Bridgestone HT tyres lasted the most
After switching over to tubeless ATs, my tyre life has come down.

      Brakes:

My driving style takes a heavy toll on the brakes, and brake pads are what I change the most.
I wore out my wheel disc 1,06,011 kms, and am now due for the next disc change.

      Batteries & Electricals

I had to change my first battery in the first 6 months thanks to the famous 2005 Bombay floods.
After that, I have changed 2 more batteries, the recent change happened after holding on to the battery for just 1 year - because of bad quality.
Exide has been powering my car, but for the sorry experience with SF which I chucked out in 1 year.

I have overhauled my Alternator twice, on one occasion cleaning the regulator and on another occasion replacing it entirely.

The speedometer sensor caused the maximum headaches, have had to change it 4 times!

      Suspension & Steering

I have changed 11 leaf springs so far, all because of breakages. Recently, I also broke one of the coil springs. I have also changed 4 shock absorbers. The steering column also has been replaced.

One of the most troublesome components has been the stabiliser rod in the steering assembly, it has had frequent problems, mainly due to loosening of the fasteners and rubber bushes.

      Windshield & Bumper

I had to replace my front windshield twice due to cracks, and the third is overdue (has a nasty crack).
I changed my front bumper twice.

      Rubber Components

I have changed a number of rubber hoses.
The main belt and power steering belts are changed once every 60,000 kms.
Changed the engine and gear box foundations once.

Apart from a minor coolant leak, the cooling system has been one of the bets parts in the Scorpio.

Some of the major components changed:
      - Steering column
      - Propeller Shaft
      - Clutch Plate
      - Alternator Regulator
      - Coil Spring
      - Wheel Discs
      - Batteries
      - Front Windshields
      - Front Bumpers

That is some brilliant statistics at tap there... Beyond Mr Kumar's data logging capability it does speak a million words about an old gen Scorpio.

Mr Kumar, have you driven new gen scorpios? What is your take on these machines? Do you think new gen Scorpios can serve as well as the old gen ones?

p.s: what is your biggest motivation to retain this very machine, I mean, wouldnt replacing it mid way through have given you similar if not more driving satisfaction, more reliability, lesser things to worry about and spend for??
