FIAT India comes up with new strategies

Just last week, Ratan Tata, the Managing Director of Tata Sons, India’s wealthiest conglomerate, and the chairman of Tata Motors, came out in the open and called for a critical examination of the Tata-Fiat JV, which simply hasn’t translated into sales growth for Fiat. Now, we’re seeing some more action from Fiat India to pull out of the morass it has dug itself into by entering the failed alliance with Tata Motors to sell and service Fiat cars in India. Fiat India’s immediate steps to reclaim the lost volumes at a time when the Indian car market actually grew rapidly look quite promising, at least at the outset.

Finally Fiat India plans to overhaul its product and distribution strategy in an attempt to prop up falling sales. Top officials from its Italian parent have recently visited India to help the Indian management rebuild Fiats brand equity in the country.

First of all, Fiat India will facelift both the Fiat Grand Punto and the Linea. While the Grande Punto might get the latest EVO styling, not too sure what the facelifted Linea will bring to the table. Nevertheless, improvement in fit and finish levels could make the already desirable Fiats a lot more hotter. But facelifts along won’t do the job for Fiat even as the huge number of Linea and Grande Punto variants along with plenty of engine options have demonstrated. What is the need of the day, as we have reiterated time and again is Fiat India taking control of the sales and service in India.

The Italian auto major is currently in discussion with dealers to set up separate showrooms so that the Fiat brand gets an identity of its own. It may be recalled that Fiat India planned standalone brand stores to promote the Fiat brand sometime ago, a plan that hasn’t really translated to much action on the ground. "Although Fiat India will look at separate showrooms, Tatas will continue to support the marketing efforts," said a senior official. In USA though, Fiat sells it’s cars through standalone stores rather than tie up with Chrysler, in an attempt to maintain the Fiat brand identity. We’re wondering why something like that can’t be replicated in India.

FIAT India on the other hand considering a compact SUV for the fast growing Indian market. The new compact SUV could be a revised version of the Sedici which the Italian automaker sells in Europe. FIAT might introduce this car in the country with certain modification to suit Indian driving conditions. The Sedici is manufactured in Hungary by Suzuki Motors and is based on the well known SX4 platform. At present FIAT porfolio in India does not include a SUV apart from the Linea sedan and the Punto hatchback.

Sedici was first introduced in 2006 at the Geneva motor show and was developed in collaboration with Suzuki motors. The more eagle-eyed folks would recognize the similarities between the SX4 in India and the Sedici as the Sedici is a high riding hatchback version of the SX4. The original Sedici was the creation of world famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and comes with an optional all-wheel drive. The car can switched from 4×2 to 4×4 with the touch of a button.

India the SX4 gets a 1.6 litre petrol as well as a 1.3 litre diesel option with 105 PS and 90 PS respectively. FIAT might opt for the 1.3 litre oil burner for the India bound Sedici as the competition which could mainly come from Mahindra & Mahindra as well as Renault. Mahindra is also coming up with a mini Xylo by next year while Maruti Suzuki is working on the R III MPV. Renault will also be launching the Duster SUV which will be priced below Rs 10 lakh.

You can't have it in India because FIAT India will not know how to sell it to you
And Tata will point you to regular cigarettes

      Doesn't this car's headlight assembly, A-pillar resemble that of SX4 ?

      Edit: I stand corrected.

The current sales of Punto are partially due to the fact that it looks good. The evo version takes that away from it, thanks to the ghastly front facia.

It might just help MSIL to push out more SX4s

Mr. Ta said bring models and they listened? Dude, you've got to shape up your A.S.S. before you bring out any new/old/outdated/scrapped models in India.
Pehele A.S.S. sudharo and then bring more cars. Simple hai?
Gosh, even the gays at 'University of Freshology' can think better than this!

MAYBE Fiat needs to sell more vehicles for the rest of the automotive industry in India to take them seriously?

I don't see a reason why Mr.Ta should be worried about improving A.S.S for a brand that barely sells

PS - Don't come back with the poor sales are because of Tata A.S.S BS. We all know what figures Fiat managed to do when they were all by themselves

Hey, I'm not saying Mr. Ta's A$$ is bad. I'm just saying that before bringing "any" models to India, they should tone up their A$$. Give it clA$$. Know what I mean?
Mr. Ta's cars are good, no comments on A$$. So please stop thinking that all Fiat Fboys think Mr. Ta's A$$ gassed their cars. I think Fiat is solely responsible for the gas-up.
Told them too much Aloo Tikki ain't good on the gastric. But 'em darn phooreiners won't listen to a Desi, now, would they?
