What are the major errors one can detect in used Tata Safari?

      Hi All,

As I'm novice to investigate any major issues/errors in a diesel engine and specifically for Tata Safari, I would like to know from the owners and users of Safari if they can share few things like:
      • How can I check if the engine of a Tata Safari is still fine and non-accidental?
      • If there are any major changes/makeovers in the engine which can affect the performance of the car?
      • Ho can I check if the chassis is not shaken/accidental?
      • What are the minor issues which I can ignore and does not affect much the performance of the car?
It would be great if you guys can add some major Do's and Don'ts for a novice person like me to be well groomed before choosing the car.

      Thanks in advance.
      Mike

Your first stop should be to check if the vehicle has been serviced regularly at a TASC. You can do this by checking the registration number / chassis number / engine number at any TASC. I am of the belief that Safaris should be serviced only at TASCs and if the one under the lens hasn't, I'd walk away. A diligent owner would have everything recorded, including accidents.

The only issue you can ignore is rattling - this does not affect the performance in any manner

      Thanks hrag,

This is really helpful. I do have the link where I can check for the last service done at any of the TASCs. How can I check for the alignment and stability of the car while running at low or high speeds?

Only an extended test drive will tell you that. Safaris have a certain play in the steering that is considered a 'feature' so bear that in mind.

Is there a link to check that? Can you share.

Ordinarily, one could walk into an ASS and ask politely with the Registration no. They are reasonably forthcoming if not too busy with customers. Between checking with the ASS and checking with the insurance history of the car, you can ascertain its history quite clearly.

Find a free SA and chat him up. They are quite polite and helpful. Request him to help check the service record with the RC no. 9/10 he will oblige. If you can take the car to the ASS and get an SA / Quality control incharge to take the car out for a test drive, they can tell you a lot of things.

      All the best.

Its actually its reassuring to hear rattles, you know that all the parts are still stuck to the chassis. The moment the rattle stops, the only possible reason could be that parts have fallen off
