Question Are you a lefty? Please vote and discuss

Left-handedness (also known as sinistrality, sinistromanuality, or mancinism) is the preference for the left hand over the right for everyday activities such as writing. A variety of studies suggest that 10% of the world population are left-handed
      Ref: Wikipedia

To start with, I am a lefty. I use my left hand for writing and it dominates my right hand in most activities including sports and games. The only time I use my right hand is while eating, this too due to strict coaching by parents when I was a kid. I faced a lot of flak from my relatives, when I was kid for writing with left hand and using left hand for most things. As per our tradition, anything "left" is considered bad.

In the world, about 10% of the population is believed to be left-handed. With a huge majority of the right handed people around, lefties do face a lot of problems in his everyday life, even though they will eventually learn to manage them in a right-handed world.

Quite a few of us here are "actually" left handed but manage to write with right hand and do most of other activities with left. That may be due to social/peer pressure. Many such people usually become ambi-dextrous, able to use both hands equally well.

In the Western world, being left handed is fully accepted by the society and we get to see a lot of them around. Some of the famous lefties include many of the Presidents of USA (Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Obama etc), many historic and current personalities (Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Queen Victoria, Prince Williams, Prince Charles, Fidel Castro, Henry Ford, etc) and many other people from the entertainment, literary/arts and sports fields (Jay Leno, David Letterman, Allen Ludden, Lewis Caroll, HG Wells, Amitabh Bachhan, Charlie Chaplin, Robert DeNiro, Greta Garbo, Angelina Jolie, Alan Border, Saurav Ganguly, Ayrton Senna, Valentino Rossi, ...etc) the list goes on. Something for us to be proud of . A good list of lefty celebrities are here.

I wanted to open this thread for discussion on being left handed.

A sincere request to all parents to not convert the habits of your child(ren) to use right hand if they are left handed. My aunt did that to one of her sons and now she repents the fact. The change definitely seems to have had an impact in the kids behaviour or so the doctors say now.

I don't understand the whole in-auspicious funda. I can agree to a certain extent that one must eat with your right hand for hygienic reasons, but thats about it.

You can add Pele, Brian Lara, Sir Garfield Sobers, Diego Maradona, Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Paul McCartney, Neil Armstrong, Mark Twain, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso and my favourite, Albert Einstein to that list too.

Sachin Tendulkar still writes with his left hand. But bats and bowls with his right. So one more added to your list of famous people who write with left hand.

Btw, I can bowl spin and bat left handed too. Does that make me ambi-dextrous?

Im a lefty with same experience. It comes naturally and those parents who force their kids into "rightness" are actually harming the kid. Even now people keep asking what why how etc and look surprised and even call others around to see this "supernatural phenomena" of lefthand writing.

I have a first hand experience of one of my cousins who ended up having severe stammering as he grew up. His parents used to beat him up for using left hand for writing and other activities. He now writes with right hand, but with terrible consequences in his life. Hope current generation parents will be more considerate.

You just stole my words. I had written about a similar experience earlier on the forum seeking the advice of the doctors here. You may want to check out this thread.

Left handedness is an accepted fact nowadays, and most modern parents are sensitive to that fact.

In fact this is so widespread that many equipments and implements are also customised for left handed people...e.g, musical instruments, sports equipment and in several cases firearms for the various armies of the world.

Superstition may stay and so will some customs, but over time people of newer generations have scant regard for these, so other than concerns of hygene in some cultures, superstitions may not hold good to discourage left handers...and that's great news.

Quite a few. Writing for example is a good place to start. In most languages which are written from left to right, visibility of the part just written will be blocked with his left hand. This, as a kid, makes it difficult to learn writing in a straight line on a plain paper. Another issue is with using fountain pen or some newer gel based pen, where the fingers on left hand tends to smudge the ink. Many lefties has overcome this issue by holding the pen in different angles, and sometimes awkwardly, for example, notice the way Obama writes. They call it over-writing, which is basically holding the pen from the top down angle. See a link below which illustrates various styles lefties write.

      http://nibs.com/Left-hand writers.htm

I used to follow #5 method during my childhood, even though the paper position has become more straight off late.

Shaking hands when meeting a person, many lefties tend to use their left hand impulsively. It still happens to me in spite of doing that thousands of times over with my right hand.

Qwerty key boards, especially on computers, are a perfect example of being forced to use right hand. Enter key, number keypad, arrow keys, backspace, and many other system keys are on the right side.

In social gatherings, some cultures follow hugging and kissing. This is almost always a source of embarrassment for lefties who tends to reach for the wrong side!

Another interesting thing I used to do as a kid was wearing the belt upside down! It may not really matter for symmetrically designed buckles, but looks awkward for those with letters or words.

There are quite few instruments which are right hand oriented. I used to struggle a lot with microscope in my college labs with its fine focus ring on the right side. Cameras has their operating button and other key switches on right side. Telephones have their handset rest on the left side, while the keypad and/or display on the right. Mouse position in my home PC s always an issue. I keep it on the left of the keyboard and all others on the right! And in many public computer centers I visit, I find that I cant even get the mouse to the left side of the keyboard due to short cable length. Sewing machines are made for right handers. Most of the electronic and household equipments has their controls on the right side including radio, television, micro wave, washing machine etc. Refrigerators has their handle on the left side so that a right handed person can open it and access the contents easily. The handle itself is designed to be used by right hand. I tend to sit on the left side in a flight, bus, train or movie theater when all of my friends or family want to sit on the right. And why is gas pedal in a vehicle on the right side? Why brakes are to be applied by right leg? While driving an automatic vehicle, left leg is completely idle, while the clumsy right leg has to manage two pedals

I can write a book on how "right handed" this world is.....

How true is this? I read that most leftys are more creative reason being that right brain is more creative while left brain is organized (left side of body is controlled by right part of brain & viceversa). And the leftys I've come across DO have something special with them. A mechanic who's a third grade seems quite a creative on his work & continues to amazes me on his extra ordinary politness & calmness for the profession he's in. Another friend of mine, who used to work with me was the same, very calm & cool & sometime came out with out of the box ideas. This is what I can recall for now. Can someone confirm on the talents?
Light travels faster than sound, this is why some people appear bright before you hear them speak

I am not sure this can be proven. There are various findings based on surveys. There is a related right brain vs left brain debate as well. Yes, it is claimed that right-brained people are more creative. They generally prefer visual communication to oral and "map-based" directions than verbal. I fully agree with that. I can never remember directions told verbally. I typically associate names of people with their appearance. I am not good at remembering names of people whom I have not met. And I prefer visual information such as maps, atlas, various infographics, charts, graphs etc than verbal or oral information. I am not very creative though, I am not good at any art, I am not a great music buff, I dont watch much movies, ... etc. May be other lefties here can share their thoughts on this.

Another interesting aspect is that I tend to do so many things at the same time, multi-tasking. For example at home in the evening, I will watch TV, read/send emails in my laptop/bb, have dinner and read newspaper/magazines, all at same time. In office right now I am typing this and attending two calls, one on my mobile an another on desk phone. This is also some characteristic attributed to lefties.
