      Padmini, Uno and an Adventure

I still remember those days when i used to sit at the back seat and look backwards at the road that we had left behind. Those days i always used to wonder why the roads look so twisted from a distance but sitting inside we never felt the car turning that much. The far away roads seemed to be on top of hills but we never felt the car struggling to get on top of them. It was just like the roads straightened up when our car approached it. Those were the days when i always got to sit at the back of our beloved Premier Padmini. It had a sunroof and was a kind of light greeny-yellow colour. Never knew what that colour was called. The car was always in racing mode though the gear shift was a bit of a problem where you had to wait for the right speed before you could downshift.

As the padmini grew old and was unable to do long distances my father started looking out for another car. One day he announced that it was going to be a Uno. Went to a dealer in my town and saw the car. Somehow i did not like the car with body coloured bumpers and they were not willing to give us a top end with black bumper so we settled for the variant with a black bumper. As our running never used to cross 1K km we preferred the petrol over the diesel. The 1.2 UNO was just launched and the engine was as smooth as butter compared to cars of those days. The exhaust note when you floored the throttle was just awesome to hear. The interior space was great. We have transported a 120litre fridge in its boot without any issue. The best was its suspension. IT took bad roads so easily that i always thought the roads smoothened up when our car approached. But by now i had moved from the back seat to the front seat The only issue we had faced was the rusty silencer which ahd to be changed every year for 6 years. But as it was to happen the Uno too grew old and the TVS "expert workmanship" during those days contributed wholeheartedly to make it feel much older. After 6 years and close to 80K on the ODO the car started giving intermittent problems which were minor but the service issues bugged us and made every small issue seem a very bad one.

My father loved the fusion and bought the ford He was looking for interior space without the car being huge. And the fusion was the perfect match. Some months into owning the ford we realised that the fiat suspension was unmatched by any other car. So when it was time for me to buy a car i was inclined towards a FIAT. The TATA tie-up also seemed to be a positive sign. By sheer luck (thanks to FIAT marketing) i happened to see a FIAT Adventure Sport in Red and i was impressed. Took a test drive and was thrilled. Asked the price and it was decided. At around 5.5lakh OTR the car was a steal with alloys, bullbars, extra foglamps, defogger, side footstep, side claddings, roof rails and what more. You name it and the car had it. 8-)

The adventure has now done close to 40K in close to 3 years. The roads still seem to straighten up and flatten up when my car approaches. And now i have moved to the drivers seat and look forward to the roads that i have to travel. The more the road the bigger the smile

Gemi, that was a very nice write-up. Kinda inspires me to write about my transition from holding the steering sitting on dads lap to driving my own car at track days now. I can sense the excitement in your words.. Looking forward to seeing more such threads from you.

Nice write up Gemi. Fiat India did bring in some good cars and destroyed them with poor A.S.S.

I had been particularly impressed with a green Palio adventure, one I had seen in TVS Coimbatore, with all terrain tyres, bull bars, side claddings, etc. Looked very macho and capable. Too bad they did not release a diesel version, which would have helped them sell some more of these.

I think most of us here have nostalgic thoughts about the Padmini. Though I learnt driving on an Ambassador, my first solo outing was on a Padmini. What a character the car had! Some of my first few cars were also from the Fiat stable... first the 1.38D, followed by a Padmini 137D S1. Those were the days.... sigh!

Still remember the huge demand that Uno created and premium for that car in Coimbatore went up to 75K (which was a LOT of money back then).

Please post some pics of your beauty.... this thread deserves some badly!

That's news to me Hrishi.... may be good that I did not know because I would have picked up one instead of my Honda City and turned into another fanboy!

Adventure diesel had the same engine as in the erstwhile Palio D, the 1.9 litre 63 bhp engine. I wonder how that pulled the beast. It would have been quite a chore for that engine I guess.

      No. Not anymore.
However, it is not a bad idea to re-introduce one with Linea's diesel engine.
