Manual Photography using Digital SLR and manual lenses (without AF)

      Hi Friends,

Initial days of photography was manual and it progressed to todays AF (autofocus) with improvement in electronics, motors and the sw controlling the electronics and motors. So its a matter of focus, half press the shutter button, compose and shoot. So its over in few seconds or milliseconds.

It's not a challenge to do AF photography except if you are a professional where speed is needed to meet the needs of client. Sometimes you need to do bird photography or BIF (bird in flight) shots, where AF would be as asset. Photography itsself is a challenge.

So this thread is all about manual photography. I put down the necessary parameters:

      a. DSLR set on manual and a manual lens. Some Digital cameras have an option to go full manual.
      b. Set the mode to Aperture priority, Shutter priority, Full Manual or other available styles like Portrait, Sunset, Sports etc.
      c. Compose and shoot after setting necessary parameters -
      d. Practice, practice

Some images which I shot with my NEX5 set in different styles and using a 300mm, f8 Mirror lens, with 2x. So the effective focal length was 300 x 2 x 1.5 (Sony APSc)= 900 mm. The day was overcast and was surprised with nice shots I could get. I did some level changes in PS to get the crisp images. There is a feature called Peaking which assists in manual focussing. Peaking makes focussing fast and easy in manual mode. With many manual lenses in my kitty, I have a long drawn manual photography session.

      hey WOODSNAKE nice initiative.

it would be great if you start off with explaining what are Aperture priority, Shutter priority. how we can control amount of light falling on sensor by varying shutter speed and opening size etc. what are the controls we would have in full manual mode. what is essential to take these kinda pics. it should serve as redy reckon for us enthusiasts. what say

It was supposed to be a cheap lens (cost me Rs. 1000) and was surprise by its outcome. I have also some sports shots which has also come well. They would follow shrtly.

For tutorials on Photography, I would start a new thread and would look for contributions from all.

In photography threads, I have added some explainations and links also.

In brief. SLR have facility to control your image and your camera. In P mode, camera controls everything, Other styles are again controlled by camera, which can be relciation either in A, S or M modes. . It is done through primarily three modes:

      a. Aperture priority (A): here the aperure is set by you and the shutter speed automatically set by camera corresponding to the S value.
      b. Shutter Priority (S): You set the shutter speed and camera automatically sets the aperture corresponding to A value.
      c. Manual mode (M): You need to set the A value, S value and click

Before that go through basic tutorials through your camera manual or many found on-line. You can try the above three even in AF mode.

A cricket match was going On in the village amongst my relatives. So I shot them with NEX5 and 300mm f8 Mirror lens + 2X extender (effective focal length was 900mm). The lens is very light and is cheap. Planning to procure a 500mm mirror lens for 4.5K. Images have come out well. The lens is manual and I used the sports style / mode to get fast shots. I used the Peaking facility to lock focus on the player. Here are some images I took from a distance. Your comments or queries would help us learn the process of taking good shots. From the images you can infer, where I was focussing. This Peaking facility is easy and makes manual focussing faster and easy.

      Hi Shyamhegde
I love the small formfactor of Nex5 and its superb IQ. Kitlens is good and I have host of lenses which I can play with. So its interesting experimenting with existing lens and also lenses of other makes- Nikon and Canon.

Hope we meet and exchange notes and ideas about photography.

Hope I can me it to meet you all. But about exchange part, I am afraid that would probably be one way... I am almost no match with your experience, experiments and efforts you have been putting in.

I am also a noob when it comes to photography and cars. Lots to learn and in the process we can exchanges ideas. Ultimately its composition which matters and not about camera, which can be mastered. Each one has his own unique idea of composition which can be exchanged.

I am digressing here from the topic. I am a zero in cars and feel my contribution here is nil. The car is just another tool for me. I have done necessary research before its procurement. I love driving and enjoy the drives. I love music especially the Blues of 70s and 80s (Boney M, ABBA, BeeGees, MJ,.....) which bring back nice memories. I also have a good ear for all kinds of music (no likes and dislikes) and stock system is enough for me. I don't want to decipher each drum beat or string/chord notes. No offence to the equipment lovers. Most important is I don't want to waste hard earned money.

Again today morning I was at JP Nagar KSCA stadium picking up my younger son after his cricket coaching class. A match was in progress and few shots, which has been zoomed to 50% & 66%.Hope you like them. Again with 300mm f8 lens.
