Force motors to come with an MPV based on the MB VIANO

Recently Force Motors announced about 1000 Cr investment to beef up their product line and come up with new products. The company which has been known for it commercial vehicles now has entered the most lucrative segment of the market with an SUV. The Force One SUV was launched recently in Mumbai. The Force One is priced at around Rs 11 lakh ex-showroom. Force Motors’ very first SUV for the Indian market has diesel engine which has been licensed from Daimler.

Daimler and Force Motors have had a history of collaboration. Force Motors Limited has been borrowing technical know-how from Daimler for virtually all its people mover and SUV models. The company has chalked out ambitious plans for India and plans to launch two more vehicles over the next couple of years. Force Motors will launch a four-wheel drive version of the Force One and also an MPV. Reports suggest that the new Force Motors MPV will be based on the Mercedes-Benz Viano.

The new MPV will seat 8 persons and could share its under pinnings with the Mercedes-Benz luxury van. Force Motors is apparently bringing in a whole plant from Daimler and installing it in Pithampur where the new MPV will take shape. The Viano based MPV is expected to roll out of the Force Motors assembly plant by 2013. We could see the same engine from the Force One in the Viano based MPV as well. The Force Motors MPV could be more or less like the Tata Winger which is again a product based on the Renault Traffic.

Also, this new MPV could also take shape of a commercial van if there is a demand for such a vehicle in the market when it rolls out. Force Motors also plans to make a 28-seater version of the Traveller which at present can seat a maximum of 21 people. So going forward, Force Motors does wish to be among the top players not only in the commercial segment but also in the passenger vehicles segment in India.

      Spied Force MPV

Before you make your judgment, let me clear the air. Yes, the image is of a Mercedes Viano (also called as the V Class). For those who are in the dark, the Mercedes Viano is a 5 door van sold by Mercedes in international markets. It is available in six or seven seater combinations but can also be extended to eight seats. It is available in petrol and diesel engines with a manual or automatic gearbox.

The interesting part is that Mercedes India has no plans to launch the Viano in India as they believe that it may adversely impact the brand. So then why is this Viano being tested in India and more importantly why are the badges covered?
Could this be the Force MPV which is due next year?

Force Motors has reportedly made it clear that once it has the dealership network in place, it plans to launch an 8 seater MPV. Before the launch of the Force One, the company had inked a pact with Mercedes to procure engine and the platform for this MPV. All hints are pointing at the Mercedes Viano. If it is the Force Viano, then Force Motors will have to work very hard to localized all components of the Viano. Force motors has made it clear that the MPV will come in the price bracket of 11-15 lakhs. Taking a Mercedes product and bringing the price down to that levels while maintaining profitability is certainly a daunting task.

Of course, Force Motors does not have to worry about the engines because they already manufacturer Daimler’s engines on a contract basis. So the Force MPV is bound to be powered by the same 2.2L engine that does the duty in the Force One.
Can we expect a mid-2012 launch?

The MPV looks sexy. If Force offer good service, it may succeed.
